The movie Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) is one of the classic movies of the great producer director Guru Dutt. This is a remarkable watershed movie, about the business of making movies. Guru Dutt plays the role of a director in the film world. The storyline is a very poignant and touching portrayal of his life as he passes through the phases of success and failure, both in the personal and professional domains. In many ways, this movie is an autobiographical essay by Guru Dutt about his own life and its tribulations, down to his supposed attraction for Waheeda Rehman, and how it disturbed his personal family life with Geeta Dutt.
The songs of this movie are very lovely, remember the lovely nazm ‘waqt ne kiya kyaa haseen sitam’. (Two songs are already posted on this blog.) The songs of this movie are penned by Kaifi Azmi and the compositions are by SD Burman.
This particular song is sung by Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Sudha Malhotra. On screen, this is picturized as a chorus, on a group of young people traveling atop a truck. Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman are traveling in a car, going for a location shoot. On the way, they meet a group of youngsters, likely going for a picnic, traveling on the truck, following the car. In the group of youngsters, one can readily identify actress Ratna, and Mehmood as the lead singers. The male lead singer for the second antaraa (paragraph) is most likely the actor Tony Walker, but I am not certain. The comedy actor Polson can also be seen sitting on one of the side bumpers of the truck. There are other familiar faces in this group, but I am not able to identify them by name.
Guru Dutt is the director and Waheeda is the leading lady in the movie. Guru Dutt is a married person. There is a strong and unsaid undercurrent of attraction between the two. They do not express it, or have not expressed it so far in the storyline, but the mutual interest is evident to all, especially the crowd of youngsters who are singing this song. So this song is simply an expression of gaiety and happiness by a group of young people out on a ride, and it is also directed at the two lead characters, expressing the feelings that they cannot express by themselves. There is a very subtle and sensitive picturization of the silent exchanges between Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman as the song progresses, very beautifully done.
Enjoy this another masterpiece from Kaifi Azmi and SD Burman from a wonderful movie, that did not do as well as expected on the box office.
