Even though I have been a long time fan and a collector of songs from obscure movies, and lesser known artists and composers, and even though after having met this blog few months ago, in song after song on a daily basis, I have encountered wonderful creations from obscure movies, yet it seems there is a huge treasure still to be unearthed. And this wonderful melody is such a superb example. Once again, a song heard many years ago on the radio, and recently rediscovered on YouTube. And what a heartening, foot tapping discovery it is.
Think of the year 1959, and a movie called Jungle King. Will not ring a bell easily. We are talking here about a lyricist with the name Anjum Jaipuri, and the composer duo Bipin-Baabul. The latter name is likely well known to many – a pair of gifted musicians who worked as assistants to other luminaries in the Hindi film world, before striking out together as a team. The golden age of Hindi film music was touching new summits with every passing year, and there were scores of lesser known and lesser engaged artists who would pour their hearts into creating wonderful melodies. Many of these melodies were destined to be lost to the listening public without much fanfare – there were more successful movies that also carried wonderful music; or sometimes the record company would not release a good number of records, as the movie did not have or was not expected to have a good run.
And yet, the music is exquisite. This song from the movie Jungle King has nothing much to boast about, except for the merits of its own beautiful melody. As for the singing voices, the female voice is that of Suman Kalyanpur, and the male voice is Baabul, the second name in the composer duo. As mentioned in an earlier comment, Baabul had originally come to Bombay to be a singer, but could not be very successful, and took up music composing instead. There is a chorus of voices that accompany the lead singers. On screen, I have not been able to identify the pair of dancers who take the lead for most of the song. During the last antaraa, Sheila Ramaani and Anwar make an appearance to sing onscreen, a part of the 3rd antaraa. The leader of the tribe, wearing a flowing white robe and a crown is none other than Badri Prasad.
As I play this song from YouTube, and am preparing the lyrics and the write up, my hands stray from the keyboard and start tapping the tabletop marking the beat with the song. The rhythm is fascinating, and the flow just seems to be an endless river of joy. The words are tailor made to suit the emotion in the situation. I just can’t stop myself from hearing this song again and again as I complete this write up.

Dear Sudhir ji,
This film, Jungle king was originally titled as ‘ Sheeba’.
The famous Radio announcer of Vividh Bharati, and a singer in his own right, KABBAN MIRZA was also one of the singers of this song. However, he was not credited. He was also the assistant Director of this film. His name is mentioned in HFGK footnote for Jungle king-59, but the song does not mention it.
There was an article in 2003 in The Indian Express, about him, after he suffered from Throat cancer and lost his voice. By that time he was already retired and his Hospital expenses were covered by his Retirement benefits from the job, being a Central Government employee.
I give here a related excerpt from that article which confirms that he had sung it….
” Mirza who was admitted to Jaslok Hospital on May 9 after he complained of cough and neck pain, came back home minus his once-famous voice. The tracheotomy tube inserted in his windpipe allows him to breathe, not speak.
‘‘He was diagnosed for throat cancer and treated 10 years ago also. But its relapse has shattered us. He won his bread and our happiness through his voice. Now he has lost that very voice,’’ bemoans Rifat, Mirza’s daughter.
As we leave his house, Mirza jots down a line of a song he had sung in the film Sheeba, from whose credits his name went missing: ‘‘Is pyar ki basti mein/hum rahte hain masti mein/duniyan hamein kya samjhe/duniyan hamein kya jaane’’(In this world of love, I live unmindful of worries, what will they make of me, they will never understand me).”
I feel his name should appear here atleast, as a tribute to him.

Wow what a song – I’ve been searching for this for ages -thanks a million – these type of songs will never be made again – we are fortunate to have heard such songs in our lifetime.
