O bewafaa ye to bataa

“Pyaar” (1950), which must easily be the shortest and most generic of all Hindi movie titles, had Raj Kapoor and Nargis in lead roles. and this movie ironically is one of the lesser known movies of this legendary pair.
For people who are used to the musical team of Mukesh, Lata, Shailendra/Hasrat Jaipuri and Shankar Jaikishan, the musical team of this Raj Kapoor movie was entirely different.
Here is a duet from this movie that must have been picturised on the lead pair no doubt. It is sung by Geeta Dutt and Kishre Kumar. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and S D Burman composed the music.
Yes, this is one of the rare occasions when Raj Kapoor lip synced in Kishore Kumar’s voice.
I heard this song for the first time only just now, and what a lovely song it is !
Song-O bewafaa ye to bataa (Pyaar) (1950) Singers-Geeta Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-S D Burman
Lyrics
o bewafaa ye to bataa
lootaa chaman kyun pyaar ka
jis dil mein tera pyaar thhaa
jis dil mein tera pyaar thhaa
us dil ko kyun thukra diyaa
lootaa chaman kyun pyaar ka
o o o
o rone waale kyaa kahoon
o dhokha kyun peena padaa
marne ki soorat hi na thhi
bas is liye jeenaa rahaa
jo ho gaya so ho gaya
mat naam le ab pyaar ka
lootaa chaman kyun pyaar ka
ho ho ho
aankhon ko aansoo deke
ab kehti ho aansoo na bahaa
marna hai to ghut ghut ke mar
fariyaad hothon pe na laa
dil ki tadap dil mein chhupaa
ye faislaa hai pyaar ka
lootaa chaman kyun pyaar ka
ho ho
zaraa soch ke mujhe dosh de
mere bas men kab tadbeer thhi
jo bichad gay wo main thhi
wo meri taqdeer thhi
kismat se ab kaise ladoon
kismat hi ne dhokhaa diyaa
lootaa chaman kyun pyaar ka
o bewafaa

Ha ha. Most generic and shortest movie name? Well, there’s “Dil” too but yes, “Pyaar” isn’t far-off either. It would be interesting to know how many “Dil” or “Pyaar” offshoots there are. Dil Tera Deewana, Dil Deke Dekho, Dil Se Mile Dil, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, Dil Diya Dard Liya, Dil Hi To Hai…just off the top of my head in less than a minute! I am sure there are many many more. 🙂
Nice song. I’ve never heard of this movie – would’ve expected a Raj Kapoor-Nargis movie to be better-known. One of the few occasions that Sachin Burman composed for a Raj Kapoor movie too, I think. Maybe he wanted to give Kishore a chance.
So, another song that you’ve unearthed for us. 🙂
