“Do Gunde” (1959) is a movie where Raj Kumar and Ajit play the two Gunde (ruffians) and their love interests are played by Kumkum and Jayshree Gadkar respectively.
This movie has music that prima facie sounds like O P Nayyar’s music, but the music is in fact composed by Ghulam Mohammad. It appears to me that Ghulam Mohammad was under instructions from the movie maker to create O P Nayyarish music in this movie. And I will not be surprised if that was indeed the case. There have been other cases during those days when other well known music directors too created O P Nayyar kind of music. For example, the music of “Bhai Bhai” (1956) too sounds O P Nayyar like, but the music ditrector of that movie was Madan Mohan !
Here is a foot tapping dance songfrom “Do Gunde” (1959). The song has several singers and I can identify the voices of Rafi, Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. There may be some other voice too that I may not have been able to identify. The song is picturised on Raj Kumar, Ajit, Kumkum, Jayshree Gadkar and lots of extras. It is interesting to see Raj Kumar and Ajit trying to dance and failing miserably, but then who is paying attention. 🙂
The lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri are wonderful, as always and Ghulam Mohammad have created a lilting dance music. This is a song that one can listen to many a times.
If this song did not become popular then the reason could lie in the fact that “Do Gunde” (1959) was a B grade movie that failed to get the mindshare of mainstream movie going public.
Now, fortnately, music lovers can listen to abd watch, and in general savour such forgotten gems from yore.
