The film Luteraa (1965) has seven wonderful songs, five of which are already discussed on this blog. This is the sixth song from this movie. This is a dance number by Helen, and the singing voice is that of Lata Mangeshkar. Luteraa is a grade B pirates adventure story, starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Dara Singh, Nishi, Helen, Hiralal, Jeevan, Maruti, Bela Bose and others. The storyline is convoluted with multiple parallel threads in progress. There are lost siblings, pirates, palace intrigues, battles at sea and what else not in the story plot.
But the music of this movie is simply superb. The songs written by Anand Bakshi, the compositions by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. The movie does not have a single song in a male voice. All songs are sung by female singers, and that too, by Lata, except for one song. There are four dance songs, and two romantic solo, all sung by Lata. Each song is wonderful gem in itself and the dance numbers are incomparable in their own right. There is one more, a duet sung by Shamshad Begum and Kamal Barot. In 1965, Laxmikant Pyaarelaal were in the starting years of their career as composers. They were in a process to consolidate their grand successes of 1963 and 1964 (Parasmani, Dosti etc.). This film in 1965, added more fame and success to their career.
This song is performed by Helen, as a court dance. Hiralal is the king, and one can see the wazir, played by Jeevan also moving behind the scenes in the court. This dance song is not very fast paced and Helen, as is her forte, has performed this piece wonderfully. One can also see Nishi in the clip. After initial flings with Helen, and promises of marriage and throne, Jeevan has by now spurned her and has other designs to capture the throne and the princess. Helen has become aware of this change in feelings. She is heartbroken and the feelings are very appropriately expressed by the words in this song,
The interesting thing about the composition is beautiful use of hand clapping as part of the music.
