‘Thief of Baghdad’ (1968) was produced by Ramkumar Bohra and was directed by Shreeram Bohra. The cast included Dara Singh, Nishi, Helen, Savita, Jeevankala, P. Kailash, B.M. Vyas, Shaikh, Ram Kumar, Maqbool, Sunanda, Amrit Rana, Jilani, Sarita Devi, Munshi Munakka, Bijnor, Ramesh Kant, Johnny Whiskey, Dilip Dutt, Maruti, Rani, Saudagar Singh, Gani, Mohammad Ali, B. Sandow, Gulab, Mansoor, Mohammad Ali Steelman, Vimla, Khursheed etc.

The film was based on a story from Arabian Nights. Probably, the inspiration for making ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’/Thief of Baghdad/Baghdad Ki Raaten’/Baghdad etc came from American silent film, ‘The Thief of Baghdad’ (1924). The first Hindi talkie film related to Baghdad was ‘Bulbul-E-Baghdad’ (1932) which was followed by ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’ (1934). Since then, there are about a dozen films with Baghdad related titles between 1934 and 1977. Producer, Shreeram Bohra made ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’ (1955) with Mahipal which he remade as ‘Thief of Baghdad’ (1968) with Dara Singh and ‘Thief of Baghdad’ (1977) with Shatrughan Sinha. In 2011, his grandson, Sunil Bohra was planning to make 3D version of ‘Thief of Baghdad’ with Sahid Kapoor. It seems that the project did not take off.

The film’s story somewhat deviates from the original story in Arabian Night. The gist of the story of ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’ (1968) is as under:

A tyrannical Vazir (Jhilani) kills the father of Mehmood (Dara Singh) and abducts his mother and sister, Yasmin (Helen). When Mehmood and his brother Mehboob (Sheikh) come to know of the abductions by Vazir, They fight with the Vazir’s troops and free the mother. However, the Vazir has taken Yasmin to the palace. Mehmood reaches the palace and after a long fight, he frees Yasmin not before he accidentally meets Princess Rukhsana (Nishi) and falls in love with her. Since Vazir’s soldiers have been looking for Mehmood, he escapes with Yasmin, promising Rukhsana that he would return.

Mehmood forms a bandit group with his brother, Mehboob, sister, Yasmin an his friend, Badru (Maruti) whose main purpose is to loot the rich and distributes the loot amongst the poor with an ultimate aim of overthrowing the tyrannical Vazir. Mehmood becomes well-known as ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’. The Vazir has issued the order to his soldiers to capture Mehmood dead or alive.

In the palace, Sultan (B M Vyas) is celebrating the 18th birthday of Princess Rukhsana for which the guests are presenting costly gifts. This news was known to Mehmood who decides to loot the gifts. He and Rukhsana attends the function incognito, the latter as a dancer. The musicians accompanying the dancer is, in reality, bandits of Mehmood. After the dance performance, Mehmood and his bandits loots the costly gifts presented to Princess Rukhsana leaving a message to the Sultan to reign in his tyrannical Vazir.

The failure of Vazir to capture Mehmood prompts the Prince (Ram Kumar) to take the responsibility of capturing Mehmood on himself. The Vazir, in his quest to take control of the kingdom by overthrowing Sultan, sees an opportunity to eliminate the Prince and put the blame on Mehmood. However, Mehmood saves the Prince who is recuperating in Mehmood’s den. In the palace, Sultan is very angry with Vazir. He sets an ultimatum to Vazir that if he does not capture or eliminate Mehmood within the next seven days, he will be beheaded. Princess Rukhsana visits Mehmood’s den and is pleasantly surprised to see her brother alive. Rukhsana falls in love with Mehmood. However, his brother, Mehboob tries to molest Rukhsana but gets reprimanded by Mehmood. Mehboob now turns against Mehmood and joins Vazir who has made himself magically immortal and is scheming to overthrow Sultan.

With the help of Mehboob, Vazir is successful in arresting Mehmood who is awaiting his death sentence. The Vazir makes himself magically immortal and put Sultan and the Prince in the prison. He gets Princess Rukhsana abducted and is kept under house arrest in a secret location. The Vazir after achieving all his objectives throws Mehboob out. He comes back to his mother and repents for deserting Mehmood. He vows to get Mehmood freed from the prison. He is joined by Badru.

With the help of a Jinh (Samson), Mehboob and Badru meet Mehmood who is freed from the prison without the knowledge of Vazir by Malika Saloni (Rani) with a promise to marry her. With lots of action and stunts scenes involving sword fights, magic carpet and flying horse, Mehmood and Mehboob overcome Vazir’s troop. Even Vazir’s immortality gets exposed when a stone replica gets smashed by Mehmood. Sultan, Prince and Rukhsana are freed from the prison. Sultan is reinstated in his kingdom. Mehmood is united with Rukhsana while Prince is united with Yasmin.

The film had five songs written by S H Bihari (3), Aziz Ghazi (2) the remaining one song being uncredited which were set to music by Baldev Nath Bali. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘mujhko deewaana kar gaye jalwe huzoor ke’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and Chorus. The song is written by Aziz Ghazi and is picturised on Helen.

The context of the song is that Sultan (B M Vyas) is celebrating the 18th birthday of Princess Rukhsana (Nishi) in the palace where Yasmin (Helen) has gone incognito giving her dance performance for the occasion. However, during her dance performance, she reveals herself and Vazir is surprised. A disguised Mehmood (Dara Singh) is also present for the occasion. After the dance performance gets over, Mehmood and his bandits in the guise of musicians loot the costly gifts and escape from the palace to their den.
