Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Saanwre saanwre

Posted on: August 3, 2011

This is a gem of a song. And still this song is not known to too many people. By now I am no longer surprised or shocked by this fact that many great songs of yesteryears have been allowed to be lost to oblivion. Indians by and large are not keen students of history and they do not have much appreciation of their rich legacy, so showing callous disregard to such great works of art will naturally follow.

I am thankful to Prakashchandra for bringing this song to my notice by sending the lyrics and other information about this song.

And make no mistake ! This song is worth its weight in gold and more.

This song if from “Anuradha” (1960). In fact, the movie begins with this song. The screen shows a radio, and an announcer’s voice comes ot stating that he is going o play a song that was quite popular ten years ago. And this song is sung by Anuradha Raj. And then this song begins to get played while the credits are appearing on the screen.

That way, this song wears multiple hats. This song is a movie opening song, as well as a radio song. That is not all. This song is a superb example of a semi classical song. the song is based on Raag Bhairavi. We are treated to a stunning singing by Lata and sensational music by Pt Ravi Shankar. yes, Pt Ravi Shankar, who later earned name and fame in the west as a Sitar Maestro is the music director of this movie and this song.

The movie version of the song is three paras long and ends as soon as the credits end. The audio version of the song has an additional para. I have included both video and audio link of the song as well as the lyrics, with the lyrics appearing only in the audio version being shown in blue.

This movie was a launch vehicle for the pretty Leela Naidu who was often described as the most beautifual woman of the world by the Indian media for nearly two decades thereafter. Balraj Sahri and Abhi Bhattacharya were the other actors of this movie.

Here is this amazing song for the readers to enjoy.

Arun ji,
Minor correction, in list of movies at the end of para, the movie name after Meera should be Godaan.

Arun ji,

Sorry I did not complete the previous reply.
I believe the movie Kabuliwala has music composed by Salil Chowdhary.

Arun ji,

Yes, you are right. The Bengali version of Kabuliwala had music composed by Pt. Ravi Shankar.

This is a superb song. In fact all the songs of Anuradha are just superb. I liked the movie too though the end was a bit tame.
