This article is written by Sudhir,a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Hansraj Behl had a career in Hindi films that lasted from 1946 to 1979, and he was one of the more successful and popular music directors in the post independence years. Creator of many iconic songs in the 50s and 60s, Hansraj Bahl’s music has a semi classical touch, with roots in his earlier training in classical music. He has been a very active music director for Punjabi movies also, and there is a large number of very popular Punjabi films songs that are composed by him.

This song is from the film Jaggu (1952). Produced and directed by Jagdish Sethi, the film includes Shyama, Kamal Kapoor, Kuldeep, Tewari, Madan Puri, Chaman Puri, Ram Mohan, Ameer Banu, Baldev Mehta and Jagdish Sethi in the star cast. The music is composed by Hansraj Bahl. The film has seven songs, penned by five lyricists. This song is written by A Shah Shikarpuri. With this film, Hansraj Behl introduced Madhubala Jhaveri as a singer. She sang five of the seven songs of this movie. The remaining two songs were shared between Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

This song is rendered by Lata ji. A melancholy composition – the lady love is calling out to her lover, pleading him to come back to her, and not to leave her.

(NOTE: as per the information in the Geet Kosh, this song is also used in the 1954 film, ‘Pensioner’.)

Song-Dil ki duniyaa loot kar o jaane waale laut aa (Jaggu) (1952) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-A Shah Shikarpuri, MD-Hansraj Bahl

Lyrics

dil ki duniya loot kar
o jaane waale laut aa
saadgi se jhhoothhi qasme
khaane waale laut aa
dil ki duniya loot kar
o jaane waale laut aa

main taraafa dard hoon
bedard hai tu tujh ko kyaa
pher li toone nigaahen
pher li toone nigaahen
ye hai ab kis ki khataa
pyaar ban ke dil mein mere
aane waale laut aa
dil ki duniya loot kar
o jaane waale laut aa

main teri nazron mein hoon
bekaar si hasti zaroor
tu meri nazron mein hai
tu meri nazron mein hai
toota hua mera garoor
aashraa de ke mujhe
thhukraane waale laut aa
dil ki duniya loot kar
o jaane waale laut aa

meri naakaami tera
anjaam ban kar reh gayee
aur suraahi se judaa
aur suraahi se judaa
wo jaam ban kar reh gayee

gam-zada dil ko mere
tadpaane waale laut aa
dil ki duniya loot kar
o jaane waale laut aa
saadgi ki jhhoothhi qasme
khaane waale laut aa

Sudhir ji,
you have rightly appreciated H.Bahl’s music accumen.
His music had a semi classical backing because from 1936(at the age of 20,having born on 19-11-1916) to 1940,he was under the training of Pt.Chunilal for classical music. In 1940 he started his own “Hansraj Music School” in Lahore. However,in 1944,he closed it and came to Bombay to become a Music Director.
As far as Madhubala Jhaveri’s first song in films is concerned, there seems to be some confusion .Nodoubt,H.Bahl gave her the break, but she sang her first song in Apni Izzat-a duet with Talat Mehmood,’Dil mera tera deewana’.
Both Apni Izzat and Jaggu were released in 1952,but A.Izzat was released in March while Jaggu released in December 1952.
Thus her first song happens to be from Apni Izzat,as above.you may please check up.
This song was filmed on munawwar Sultana and Motilal. In one interview,Madhubala Jhaveri said,” M.Sultana was upset that a newcomer was singing her song, while she wanted some wellknown singer. However she was convinced by the Director and Producer and she reluctantly agreed. After this song became popular, she was happy and said sorry to me.”
Duet songs of T.Mehmood and M.Jhaveri became popular(most of them),because the voices of Talat and Madhubala were contrasting.

Atulji,
I came across this song recently. I liked this song and your write-up. You have mentioned the same song was used in ‘Pensioner (1954). Was it used with some variations or was it used as it is? Is there a clipping of this song from ‘Pensioner’ in YT?
