I can expect the kind of reactions that readers of this blog will express on reading the title of the song. “What ? this song was not yet discussed ? How could you not discuss this song till now ?” etc etc.
Honestly, I thought that I had discussed this song long back. It is only when I received the lyrics of this song from nahm and checked up that I realised that this song was actually missing from the blog.
What a stunning song, and what wonderful picturisation ! This is a melancholic song where Vyjyatimala sings this song in the loneliness of night and in a boat. Dev Anand is also there at a distance.
The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri Shailendra. It is sung wonderfully well by Lata. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Whether this song was penned by Shailendra or not, it seems to aptly eflect his state of mind after producing TEESRI KASAM.

I have checked the Film’s titles and it is specifically stated there that ‘Rula ke gaya sapana mera’ was written by Shailendra.

After the stupendous success of Guide songs , Vijay Anand requested Shailendra to continue the successful combination with S D Burman for Jewel Thief. But Shailendra unable to recover from the massive failure of Teesri K asam refused. Under great persuasion , he finally wrote the song with R D Burman going to his place and taking down the song. Later he died and Majrooh wrote the remaining lyrics.

Dear Atul and friends.. There is an interesting story behind the lyrics of this song. Shailendra was actually mourning the loss of his production ” Teesri Kasam” which as you all know was a classic which didnt do well at the box office. Shailendra had put his heart and soul and all his life’s earnings into the venture. Despite stellar performances from his lead artists. debut movie for director Basu Bhattacharya, brilliant scores by SJ and equally mesmerising choreography by Lacchu Maharaj, the movie sank and it was in this period of distress, Shailendra wrote this song. Sadly a few days after he died, the movie won rave reviews everywhere and even the President’s gold medal. What a man.. What a lyricist. You may be able to appreciate the pain in the lyrics and what a rendition by Lata and the composition by Dada Burman take it to greater heights.
One of the reasons why I feel these lyricists wrote such wonderful soul searching lines is because they had seen difficult times and had observed life at close quarters. Also they had their own ideals and principles. It is our good fortune their work is there for us and the future generations to savor. Thank God for that

I am pretty certain this is written by Shailendra. This was the only song he wrote for Jewel Thief before his untimely death. After that, Majrooh was called in to write all the other lyrics
