Ek yaad kisi ki yaad rahi

Posted on: September 8, 2011

“Shamaa” (1946) is a movie about which very little information is available and digging up information about this movie is a time consuming process. And irritatingly, the little information that turns up is incorrect as well. So I decided to dig up my own comments from the two earlier songs of this movie that I had discussed in the past. From those comments, I see that this movie has Mehtab and Rehana in this movie.

This movie also have Abu Bakar, Amirbanu, Anwari, Chandabai, Jafri Begum, Prakash, Sadat Ali, Wasti etc in it as I can dig out.

Most songs in this movie are sung by female singers but there is a lovely piano song in this movie that has the voice of G M Durrani.

I am not sure about the actor on whom this song is picturised nor about the lady who joins in the singing a little while ago. My guess is that the man lip syncing in G M Durrani’s voice is Wasti. I request our knowledgeable readers to hel identify the two actors in the picturisation.

All sources that I have come across describe this song as sung by G M Durrani and Shamshad Begam. I have difficulty agreeing that the female voice is Shamshad Begam’s. She has a distinctive voice quite dissimilar to the female voice heard in this song. I feel that the female voice in this song is Zohrabai Ambalewaali’s. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

Ehsan Rizvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.

The song has two versions-A duet version as well as a male solo b=version sung by G M Durrani.

It is important to keep it in mind that a movie of same title was released in 1961 and that movie had music by Ghulam Muhammad. With two similar named movies with similar named music directors, there is often much confusion among music lovers about these songs and their composers.

8th september is the death anniversary of G M Durrani and here is this lovely song from “Shama”(1946) as a tribute to him.

Ek yaad kisi ki yaad rahi
ek yaad kisi ki yaad rahi
aur saari duniya bhool gaye
dil gham ke geet sunaataa hai
dil gham ke geet sunaataa hai
aaraam ka naghmaa bhool gaye
ek yaad kisi ki yaad rahi
aur saari duniya bhool gaye

kyun kar main hansoo
dil rota hai
ab khoon ke aansoo rota hai
be-aas jahaan mein jeete hain
be-aas jahaan mein jeete hain
jeene ki tamanna bhool gaye
ek yaad kisi ki yaad rahi
aur saari duniya bhool gaye

ik yaad
kisi ki yaad rahi
ik yaad kisi ki yaad rahi
aur saari duniya bhool gaye
dil gham ke geet sunaataa hai
dil gham ke geet sunaataa hai
aaraam ka naghmaa bhool gaye

hai dil ke saaz ki dori lay
hai dil ke saaz ki dori lay
dukh dard bhi hai
aaraam bhi hai
dukh dard bhi hai
aaraam bhi hai
kyun gham ki lambi taanon mein aen
tum geet khushi ka bhool gaye

ik yaad kisi ki yaad rahi
aur saari duniya bhool gaye

kyun kar main hansoo
dil rotaa hai
ab khoon ke aansoo rotaa hai
be-aas jahaan mein jeete hain
be-aas jahaan mein jeete hain
jeene ki tamanna bhool gaye
ek yaad kisi ki yaad rahi
aur saari duniya bhool gaye

Atul:

I agree that the female voice sounds different from Shamshad’s, and is likely that of Zohrabai.

Atul ji,
The voice in the above song is that of Shamshad begum only. This is listed in her List of Songs.( ref; http://cineplot.com/music/shamshad-begums-song-list-1946-1950/).
SHAMA(1946),was a Minerva Movietone film produced by Sohrab Modi and Directed by a team of 3 Directors, namely Rustum Khambatta,Adi Keeka and Abdul Majid.Music by Ghulam Hyder and Lyrics were by Shevan Rizvi,Shams Lucknowi and Ehsan Rizvi. The story/sp/dia were by Hakim Ahmed Shuja.
The cast consisted of Mehtab and Wasti as Lead pair with Abu bakar,Amir banu,Anwari begum,Chandabai,Jafri begum,Prakash,Sadat ali, etc.
The story was a melodrama, depicting the ultimate sacrifice of the wife for the happiness of her husband in true indian style, befitting Indian culture.

This is listed in all lists in all sources in internet as sung by Shamshad Begam. I have the audio of this song and there too Shamshad Begam’s name is written. But the voice is clearly not Shamshad Begam’s. Even in the other songs of this movie, where Shamshad Begam and Zohrabai Ambalewaali sing together, one can see that Shamshad Begam’s voice is not the same as is heard in this song. Listen to the voice of Shamshad Begam and Zohrabai Ambalewali in this song from the same movie (https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/gori-chali-piyaa-ke-desh/ )
It appears to me that original error in attributing incorrect name is being propagated everywhere.

There was another movie named “shama” sometime in the 80’s , starring Shabana Azmi. In this film Shabana Azmi sang a ghazal/song too for herself. I remember that it was a quite nice song. Will have to look it up on the net.

Deshmukh Sir & Prakashchandra ji,

I guess i mixed two different movies and made one ‘shama’. Now I remember the song “Chand apna safar khatm karta rahaa”. Very beautifully sung by Lata in the voice of so much like Shabana Azmi.

In fact i found a youtube clip having the song playing through different stages of the film. First part it seems is sung by Usha (as per the info provided) and the rest is clearly Lata. Here is the link:

Yes the female voice in the first quarter resembles that of Usha Khannaji`s.While seeing the information written on the video clip, I thought it is Usha Mangeshkar, But after carefully listening I think (but I am not sure)it is usha khannaji`s voice.

Atul ji,
As far as the female voice in this song is concerned, after listening to the song few times I was also convinced that the voice is not that of Shamshad Begum.
I started going thru my different notes of the 40s and I found the answer.
The voice in this song is that of SURAIYYA.
It seems all the songs of SHAMA were first recorded with Suraiyya’s voice as it was decided that she will act in the movie.Due to some reason Suraiya did not act in the film, but by that time all these records were already out in the market. This perticular song is sung by Suraiya and G.M.Durrani and the record no. is N-26774.The other songs were also on different record No.s,but that is not relevant here.
When the film was shot with Wasti and Mehtab in the lead, same songs were recorded again with Shamshad begum,Zohrabai,GMDurrani etc for the film. These songs also came in the market. The above song sung by GMDurrani and Shamshad Begum is on record no.GE-3685.The same song is recorded as a solo of Durrani on record no.GE-3688.
The song by Suraiya and Durrani must have been used in this clip shown above.
In order to confirm my information,I referred to HINDI FILM GEET KOSH VOL II and on the page no.621,I found all the info given, corroborating my notes, under Appendix-3,against the entry of SHAMA.
Thus your gut feeling was absolutely correct, only it is not Zohrabai, but it is Suraiya.

Atul ji,

This video clip consisits of two versions – One solo by G M Durrani and other duet by G M Durrani and Shamshad Begum/Surraiya. One can observe the change of Wasti’s dress in solo and duet versions at 2:00 of the video clip.

Kamalakar Pasupuleti had mentioned in his Blog http://kamalp.blogspot.in/2014/04/memoirs-shama-1946-story-of-nawab.html?view=sidebar that :

“Shamshad Begum rendered all the songs filmed on Mehtab . Actress Mehtab had fascination for the voice of Suraiya , who could not sing the songs for Mehtab on the screen as she stopped giving playback . Hence Mehtab got the songs recorded in Suraiya’s voice as version songs . Suraiya (had) rendered songs for Mehtaab in films Sharada – 1942 and Sanjog – 1943”.
