Main rotaa hoon mat manaa karo

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Comparatively, the treasure of Hindi songs by Pankaj Babu is limited. In the Hindi/Urdu domain, Pankaj Babu has scored music for about 25 films from 1933 to 1954, some of them in collaboration with RC Boral. He has rendered less than 40 songs in all, in Hindi films. Outside of films, and excluding the live programs and recordings, the non-film Hindi songs number about 20. And so comparatively, his contribution appears to be not as significant (in the Hindi domain) as that of his contemporaries. His musical creations are more prolific in the Bengali film and non-film space. By some accounts, Pankaj Babu has composed over five thousand songs. Simply going by the numbers, it is evident that his major contribution has been in Bengali.

And yet, his contributions and his role in enriching the music culture of the subcontinent is outstanding. He has made monumental contribution in brining Rabindra Sangeet into the cultural mainstream of films and non film music. For his contributions, he was honored with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, way back in 1974. After Devika Rani, BN Sircar and Prithviraj Kapoor, he was then the fourth stalwart recognized with this honor.

This song is a melancholy presentation, a non-film ‘geet’ composed and rendered by Pankaj Babu. The lyricist of this song is not ascertained. A song of deep unhappiness, with words that portray a resigned acceptance of the sorrows of life. The unhappiness is attributed to separation from the beloved; the poet is certain that he will not see her anymore. The words say that the barren season of Autumn is now meant for him. The deep sound of Pankaj Babu’s voice adds to the gravity and the apathy that the poet is trying to convey in words.

main rota hoon, mat manaa karo
tum mere aansoo ginaa karo

I weep with sorrow
Don’t try to console me
Just count the tears that flow from my eyes

roney mein meri duniya hai
aansoo mein meri basti hai
main dukh ka kaalaa baadal hoon
dhoopon mein aag barasti hai
tum meraa ronaa sunaa karo

Weeping is all that is there is my world now
And tears are my only existence, my destiny
My being is now just a dark cloud of unhappiness
The sun rises to be an inferno for me
Just listen to the sounds of my sobbing

main ro kar jeenaa seekh gayaa
phir has kar ke kyaa karnaa hai
bas yaad tumhaari aankhon mein
le kar ke paar utranaa hai
tum dukh kaa taanaa bunaa karo

I have learnt to live the life with this grief
Where is the need now for happiness and laughter
With your memories and image in my eyes, now
I have to go across this river of life
Just weave this fabric of sorrow for me

main patjhad mein hoon badaa sukhi
mat bhool ke sakhi bahaar banoo
main tootaa phootaa ghar achha
tum mat is ki deewaar bano
tum dil par pathhar chunaa karo

I now find solace in the barren season of autumn
O my friend, do no attempt to foist the spring on me
This derelict and broken house of mine, is now good enough for me
Don’t try to shore up and support the walls of this house for me
Just build a crypt of stones on my heart

Song-Main rotaa hoon mat manaa karo (Pankaj Mullick NFS) (1940) Singer-Pankaj Mullick,MD-Pankaj Mullick

Lyrics

main rota hoon
main rota hoon
mat manaa karo
tum mere aansoo ginaa karo
main rota hoon
mat manaa karo

roney mein meri duniya hai
aansoo mein meri basti hai
main dukh ka kaalaa baadal hoon
dhoopon mein aag barasti hai
tum meraa ronaa sunaa karo
main rota hoon
main rota hoon
mat manaa karo

main ro kar jeenaa seekh gayaa
seekh gayaa
phir hans kar ke kyaa karnaa hai
bas yaad tumhaari aankhon mein
le kar ke paar utarnaa hai
tum dukh kaa taanaa bunaa karo
main rota hoon
main rota hoon
mat manaa karo

main patjhad mein hoon badaa sukhi
badaa sukhi
mat bhool se sakhi bahaar bano
ho o o o
bhool se sakhi bahaar bano
main tootaa phootaa ghar achha
tum mat is ki deewaar bano
tum dil par
tum dil par pathhar chunaa karo
main rota hoon
main rota hoon
mat manaa karo

I have been reading your articles on Pankaj Mullick song with great interest. On a personal note I am extremely grateful because all these songs have been my great favourites for decades, but in every one of his song, there were places when I could not decipher his words no matter how many time and how attentively I tried to listen. For example, in this song the line Tum mat is ki deewar bano, I could never work out. Now I can hear these songs with a new sense of realisation. Thanks a lot again.

Bharat ji,

Thanks for your note. I listened to the words again many times, and I am not able to decipher the way you suggest. Maybe I should request a third person to hear and recommend.
