“Oomar Qaid” (1961) is a movie produced by Super pictures and directed by Aspi Irani. This B grade movie had actors like Sheikh Mukhtar, Sudhir, Nazima, Helen, Mukri, Hiralal, Sulochana, Mohan Choti, Jeevankala etc in it.
Personally I believe that the so called B grade movies of Sheikh Mukhtaar from 1960s were no different from the A grade movies of Amitabh Bachchan in 1970s, as far as story line was concerned. And if one asks me, Sheikh Mukhtaar is more convincing in the roles that Amitabh Bachchan would play in the next decade.
And as far as the music of these movies were concerned, they were absolutely A grade, but like the movies, these songs too remained largely unsung.
I have discussed two songs from “Oomar Qaid” (1961) in the past. Here is another song. This is a song which I came across for the first time only just now, exactly half a century after this song was created.
The song mentions the name of places like Bombay, Calcutta, Banaras etc and such name dropping songs used to be favourite songs of smaller town kids like me, who dreamt of having such songs mentioning the names of their towns as well. But while smaller places like Bareli (Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar me(Mera Saaya)), Bikaner (Mera naam hai Chameli…chali aayi Bikaner se(Raja Aur Rank)) etc got their own songs, the then my town (Ranchi) never got one such song. I suppose it is not too late even now. One can even now have a song on Ranchi like “Anhoni ko honi kar de, Ranchi ka Dhoni, Mahender Singh Dhoni” or something similar. 🙂 And of course, do not forget to credit me. 🙂
This song, which discussed Bombay, Kalkatta, Chaupati,Banaras etc is written by Hasrat Jaipuri and its music is composed by Iqbal Qureshi. This song is sung by Rafi and Kamal Barot. The song is picturised on two male actors and a female. The two male actors (one of them is Mohan Choti) take turns to lip sync in Rafi’s voice while the lady dancer gets to lip sync in Kamal Barot’s voice.
This is a road side tamasha song at this song is very much a fore runner to the songs like Deewaane hain deewaanon ko na ghar chaahiye (Zanjeer) and Ei hai Bambai nagariya tu dekh babuaa (Don) in which artists would sing songs on the Chaupati beach of Bombay, with many bystanders gathered around the performers.
I request our readers to throw more lights on this movie as well as on the artists on whom this song is picturised.
PS-Thanks to the identifications by Sudhir jee, I now know that the harmonium player cum dancer is Mohan Choti, Dholak player cum dancer is Mohan Jerry, and the lady dancer in Jeevankala.
