This song is a wonderful fun song from the film Khel (1950). And a fitting finale, too. Of the nine songs in this film, eight are already posted here on this blog. This is the ninth song that is rare and obscure, so much so that it has not been posted on the internet yet. In the write up for the eighth song of this film published on this blog “Kahe Mujhse Jawaani Mere Dil Ki Kahaani” , Atul ji has mentioned that the one last song is yet to be discovered. That was almost two weeks ago. On searching through my collection, I am now able to locate this song; and it is now posted on YouTube.

Khel is production by Shaaheen Pictures, Bombay, and is directed by SM Nawaab. The star cast is impressive and includes Dev Anand, Nigar Sultana, Hafeez Jahaan, Anwar, Sri Krishna, Murad, Amanullah, Abu Bakar, Neelam etc. The nine songs of this film are penned by no less than seven poets. This particular song is written by Khaawar Zamaan. The inimitable composition is by Sajjaad Hussain Saab. The song is a duet, with the singing voices of Geeta Roy (later Geeta Dutt), and GM Durrani.

The song is a very playful creation. It is a longish song, and plays for about 6 minutes. Sajjaad Saab has crafted a wonderful piece of music. The pace and rhythm changes multiple times during the song. The lyrics have some English words included, and the wordings are humorous. Like the line where the lady tells the gentleman that she cannot run away with him, since he does not have a cycle. Or the line where the lady is telling her challenger “teri aisi taisi mera baalam de jaa”.

The entire song is a lot of fun. Enjoy this masterly creation by the one and only “original composer” in the Hindi film industry – Sajjaad Hussain Saab.

Stop playing these pretentious games of love
(NOTE: ‘bhaujaai’ is another word in Hindi for ’bhabhi’ (sister-in-law). ‘Taai’ refers to aunt, specifically to the wife of father’s elder brother)
(NOTE: the words used for game of love is really hilarious – ‘prem kabaddi’, in which the player is supposed to hold the breath as he/she forays into the opposition territory).

khaa gayee hum ko raqeebon ki nazar

(literally – my beloved has come to me, to my home)

(Now the lady sees that her beloved is accompanied by another fair maiden)
O my beloved is cruel and heartless
He is accompanied by a fair maiden from across the seas
And he cares not for the suffering in my heart
My cheeks that used to be rosy
Are today covered with layers of paleness

(This is addressing the competitor ‘mem’)
Woe be unto you

(This is now the gentleman speaking, about himself and his newfound ‘mem’ companion)

(This is now the new ‘mem’ speaking, dreading the wrath of the one she dares to oppose)
O my dear, my life is plunged into danger
Save me
This (earlier) lady friend of yours, is a menace
Remove this menace from my presence

mudda’ee laakh buraa chaahe to kyaa hota hai
wohi hotaa hai jo manzoor-e-khudaa hotaa hai

(This is the gentleman once again, turning philosophical)
Well, the enemy may assail you with all threats of ill will and misfortunes
Yet, only His writ will prevail, not that of the enemy

choli pehan
ab ke mere baalamwaa ki ban jaa chhoti behn

(Back to the lady again with more advise for the new ‘mem’)

(NOTE: in the traditional dressing customs of the sub continent, ‘choli’ is a blouse and ‘ghaaghraa’ is a long skirt)

This is a famous shair i think by Jigar Moradabadi. I have searched the net, & found that it is used in the Singature/Logo of Mehboob Productions. There is the song in “Rafoo chakkar” :

Kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
wahi hota hai to manzoor-e-khuda hota hai

I remember the second line being used once in the famous Amul Hoarding too, with a slight modification.

Nahm ji,
While on the issue of ‘Muddai lakh….’,I may inform that Mehbood Productions’ signature tune WAS this couplet and hardly anybody knew who uttered those words.For many years it was a secret.However,it was then found out that the voice was that of RAFIQ GAZNAVI,an emerging Music Director and singer in those times,whom Mehboob had groomed in his early days for which RG always expressed his gratitude.
