Posted on: December 23, 2011

Noorjahaan acted in 69 Hindi talkies and sang 127 Hindi movie songs according to wikipedia. This blog has 20 songs sung by her, so we already have about 16 % of all songs that she sang in Hindi movies.

Noor jahaan died on 23rd december 2000. Today (23rd december, 2011) is her death anniversary. On this occasion, here is this song from “Badi Maa” (1945) which is sung by Noorjahaan. Anjum Pilibhiti is the lyricist and music is composed by K Datta (real name Datta Korgaonkar).

“Badi Maa” (1945) is an old and obscure movie by now. This movie was produced by Master Vinayak. Sitara Devi, Ishwarlal, Girish, Yaacoob, Jog, Noorjahaan , Meenakshi,Dada Salwi, Leela Mishra etc were the actors in this movie. Curiously enough Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle (then Asha Mangeshkar) had also acted in this movie.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath and he rates this song as his personal favourite among all the Noorjahaan songs that she sang in Hindi movies.

Song-Kisi tarah se muhabbat mein chain paa na sakey (Badi Maa) (1945) Singer-Noorjahaan, Lyrics-Anjum Pilibhiti, MD-K Datta

Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)

lagi wo aag hai seene mein
jo bujha na sake
lagi wo aag hai seene mein

zubaan chup rahi meri to aansoo bol uthhe
zubaan chup rahi meri to aansoo bol uthhe

kuchh aisi ujdi hai basti

Atul ji,
BADI MAA-1945 was a film of Prafull Pictures of Master Vinayak (Father of actress Nanda). It was produced and directed by Master Vinayak with music by K.Datta or Datta korgaonkar or D.P.Korgaonkar.The story was by V.S.Khandekar,noted Marathi writer, who was ,later, the First recipient of Dnyanpeeth Award for his novel “YAYAATI”.The lyrics were by Anjum pilibhiti,Zia Sarhadi and Raja Badhe, who was a noted Marathi poet.

Master Vinayak was forced to produce this war effort movie to save his company, because the Govt. at that time desperately needed public support for their war efforts.Such pictures were given grants for production also.if they refused, the consequences were dire.
The word Badi Maa,in this film meant Motherland-India.

In Dinapur,Durgadas(Salvi) was worried about his son Dinesh(Ishwarlal) studying in London, due to attacks by Germans.Moneylender Ghanashyam(Girish)agrees to write off his loan,if his daughter Usha(Meenakshi-Master winayak’s wife in reality) marries his son Rajendra(Yakoob). But Rajendra and Mona(Sitara Devi) are Japanese spies in India. When Durgadas refuses ,his house is confiscated, sold and he is on road.Ghanashyam’s daughter Hema(Noorjehan) does not like this as she loves Dinesh.Dinesh comes back to find father poor and destitute.SuddenlyJapanese attack the villege and Rajr=endra helps them .Usha urges Rajendra to fight for Badi Maa i.e. Motherland and dies due to bullets.Rajendra repents and saves his village, along with Dinesh. In this,Rajendra dies for the motherland or Badi Maa.

Dinesh and Hema marry.

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed summary Arun Kumar Sir! Some online reviews (on IMDB, etc.) are very unclear. No mention of what Noor Jehan Ji was in the film. Thanks a lot for confirming! Who was Baby Alka Ji in the film? What roles did Lata Ji and Asha Ji play? Is it that they appeared just for songs? Kindly clarify if possible.
