One of the much loved genre of songs in Hindi movies is lullaby. There have been some memorable lullabies in Hindi movies.
One of the very first lullabies in Hindi movies was from “Albela” (1951). And this lullaby went on to become an immortal lullaby.
This lullaby had three versions, viz happy female version and sad female version, both sung by Lata and picturised on Geeta Bali. This song also had a male version which was sung by C Ramchandra and picturised on Bhagwan.
Today (5th january) is C Ramchandra’s death anniversary. On this occasion, here is this timeless lullaby (all the three versions) from “Albela” (1951).
Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist.

Just an interesting trivia….
In the VDO song above the singer is BIMLA KUMARI,the same actress who sang the iconic song,’ Hawa me udta jaye mera laal dupatta malmal ka…’ in film Barsaat.

I just saw Bimla Kumari’s photo under the song “Hawa me udta jaye…..” from our blog. I haven’t seen this movie, but have seen this song many times. And I was under the impression that Nimmiji was singing this song.Thanks for pointing out. Can you give me name of other movies with Bimla Kumari?

Our Hindi film industry is notoriously known for artists bearing same names and no tags for identification,making the job of info-writers
difficult.
There was an actress Bimla kumari and a Singer Bimla kumari in the 1940s also,but this Bimlakumari was active in the end of 1940 to 1962 and should not be mistaken for other B.Kumaris.
The above actress Bimlakumari acted in Barsaat-49,Albela-51,Sunehre Din-49,Sargam-50,Shrimatiji-52, then she went to Madras and did some dance items in southern movies before returning to Bombay,Do Ustaad-59 and last film Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam-62.

Thanks for the info and sorry to trouble you again. Is this Bimlakumari in sargam is one of the lady in the song “jab dil ko satawe gam tu chhed sakhi sargam” begining the song and playing sitar sitting on our left side and singing the line “rang beerangi saat badaliyan”? I love this song very much and was thinking to write it and send it to Atulji to remember the composer, C.Ramchandra on his death anniv, which is today instead of other two.

What a beautiful song. Hearing it for the first time, but sounds very familiar. Is there a Tamil movie song which is similar? The song is on loop now. I think Albela had some amazing songs.

Atulji,
Little correction. The happy version of Lataji is when Sister Bimla (played by Bimla Kumari) is making her brother Pyarelal (Bhagwan) sleep. Then comes the Chitalkarji’s version, in which Pyarelal is singing same lullaby (shorter version than her sister’s) for Asha (Geeta Bali) when she was tired. Now, the third version, Lataji’s sad one, comes when Bimla and her father (Badri Prasad) are begging on streets and she sings the same lullaby (but different words) to comfort his father. I watched this movie in theater when it was re released again. I must be a preteen then. Just remember the main story. Our Arunji can write up the story if anyone wishes.

The story of ALBELA is too wellknown to be needed to repeat here.
I have another point here.
The dictionary meening of LULLABY is given as ” a soothing song to send a child to sleep ”
In the colloquial meening also lullaby is for a baby or a child.
By any standard,this song does not fit into the class of lullaby,unless ofcourse one considers the mental age of Bhagwan,in this scene.
Though this song has been hailed as an excellent Lullaby,since its birth,in true sense it can be categorised as a soothing song,at best !

Yes, you are right. This song is not a lullaby in true sense of the word. But if one has not seen the picturisation, then the song sounds like a lullaby.

Yes, it is not a lullaby song as you have explained, but It has been a lullaby song for those mothers, especially of that generation, who must have sung this song umpteen times to make their babies sleep 🙂

Yes I agree with you when you go with the literal meaning of lullaby, it doesn’t fit into that category. But like all mothers, I also have sung this lullaby (sorry, soothing song for my boys). They loved this song, as they were/are not aware of the situation/picturisation.Thanks for the correction. So, Atulji, in which category you are thinking of keeping this song in?
