“Yaadon Ki Baaraat” (1973) was a movie which had a lost and found story where three brothers get orphaned (their parents murdered by the villain) and then they get separated. The brothers later grow up, take revenge on the villain and get reunited.
This movie with a routine storyline rose much above its storyline, thanks mainly to the music of this movie. The music of this movie cught the imagination of Indians of all generations. I as a 10 year old kid, barely into my teens was mesmerised by the music of this movie, which was only to be expected, seeing that the music of this movie was composed by R D Burman.
In this movie, Dharmendra, playing the eldest of the three sons, sings no songs and concentrates on revenge (Kutte, Kameene, main tera khoon pee jaaunga stuff), and leaves the singing and dancing stuff to actors playing his younger brothers and actresses playing their love interests. And what stunning songs they get to lip sync to ! The magic weaved by this songs have not yet worn off even today. During that age, the magic created by these songs was something to be seen (heard) to be believed.
To this date, I do not know how many songs this movie had. Each and every song of this movie sounded just incredible to me.
I never got to watch this movie. It would have been an experience of the lifetime had I watched it. But then the elders responsible for bringing me up believed that watching movies was a sinful and immoral act, comparable to acts like gambling, drinking, reading novels, playing cards etc and kids needed to be discouraged from such acts. As a result, I grew up as quite a morally upright individual. 🙂
People could prevent me from watching movies, but there was no way one could prevent me from listening to the songs of this movie. The songs of this movie were all over the place.
Here is an out and out magical song from this movie. It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. The song is picturised on Vijay Arora and Zeenat Aman.
Listen to this song. The song showcases music which is magic, singing which is inspired and divine, and lyrics that are simple but effective.
This song is the 500th song of Kishore Kumar as a playback singer in this blog. This song in a true representation of Kishore Kumar’s charisma as a playback singer. Kishore Kumar brings incredible value addition to this song, as does Asha Bhonsle. Likewise, the unnamed musicians forming the orchestra of this song have created a masterpiece that will live on in memory.
Here is this incredible song from “Yaadon Ki Baaraat” (1973). It is a song that one can listen to counless number of times without feeling bored. In fact, I have heard this song countless times and I have not been bored.

Lyrics
ho
meri soni
meri tamannaa
jhooth nahin hai meraa pyaar
deewaane se
ho gayi galti
jaane do yaar
I love you
I love you
meri soni
meri tamannaa
jhooth nahin hai meraa pyaar
deewaane se
ho gayi galti
jaane do yaar
I love you
I love you
aake meri aankhon mein tum dekho
in mein har ik ada tumhaari hai
kahane ko ye dil hai meraa lekin
dhadkan mein sadaa tumhaari hai
tum se hai chain meraa
tum se hai
meraa qaraar
laa laa laa laa
I love you
I love you
mere sonaa
meri tamannaa
jhooth nahin hai meraa pyaar
deewaani se
ho gayi galti
jaane do yaar
I love you
I love you
tadapti hoon
bahut naa tadpaao
achchhaa baabaa chalo ham hi haare
tum ne agar dil se mujhe chaahaa
tum bhi to ho sanam mujhe pyaare
mere qareeb aao zaraa
sun bhi lo
dil ki pukaar
laa laa laa laa
I love you I love you
meri soni
meri tamannaa
jhooth nahin hai meraa pyaar
deewaane se
ho gayi galti
jaane do yaar
I love you
laa laa laa I love you
laa laa laa I love you
