Dil jawaan hai aarzoo jawaan

Posted on: January 6, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

January 6th is the death anniversary of Jaidev Verma, known as Jaidev in Hindi film world. He was one of those unlucky music directors who, despite being extremely talented, did not make it to the top in Bollywood. He had given hit songs in Hum Dono (1961), Kinaare Kinaare (1963), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Reshma Aur Shera (1972) , Gaman (1979) and many more. He is the only music director who won National Award for best music direction three times for Hindi films – Reshma Aur Sehra, Gaman and Ankahee.

I have chosen one of his early compositions – dil jawaan hai aarzoo jawaan from film SAMUNDARI DAAKU (1956) for discussion as our tribute to Jaidev. I think, this is one of his very rare compositions based on western style tune. The song is sung by Talat Mehmood and Asha Bhonsle. Talat Mehmood has been known for singing romantic songs in a melancholic voice but he has sung this romantic song in a happy mood. The star cast of the film included Nasir Khan, Nadira, Kumkum, Johnny Walker etc. The song may have been picturised on the lead actors, probably at a sea shore beach.

Only the audio link of this song is available.

Initially, I felt that the song had two versions – Talat solo and Talat-Asha duet. But after listening to two audio links that are available on YT containing full song, I feel, it is a single song because after the end of Talat verses, the music continues and Asha Bhosle takes over followed again by Talat Mehmood. The last 4-5 lines are sung by Talat and Asha together but Asha sings in alaap whereas Talat sings the verses.

PS-This song actually has two versions as mentioned by myswar.

Lyrics

dil jawaan hai aarzoo jawaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan
dil jawaan hai aarzoo jawaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

ye kyaa ghazab hai
dilrubaa hai apne aap se khafaa
dhari rahegi har adaa
jo dil kisi pe aa gayaa
guroor-e-dil rahegaa phir kahaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

wo husn kyaa jo rooth ke
nigaah ko na pher le
wo ishq kyaa jo chhed ke
na zulf ko bikher de
wo soz kyaa uthhe na jo dhuaan
ik nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

main jaantaa hoon ae pari jhukhi jhukhi nazar teri
uthi to haar jaayegi
zaroor muskuraayegi
na chhup sakegi dil ki daastaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

dil jawaan hai aarzoo jawaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

ajeeb dard pyaar bhi,
ke geet bhi bahar bhi
nasha bhi ha khumar bhi,
fizaa bhi hai bahaar bhi
yehi hai do dilon ki daastaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

garoor hai na shaan hai
har ek adaa jubaan hai
ye kaisa imtihaan hai,
ke husn meharbaan hai
zameen pe jhuk raha hai aasmaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

tadap qaraar ban gayee
fizaa bahaar ban gayee
dabi dabi jo aag thhi
kisi ka pyaar ban gayee
main aa gayee wahin hai dil jahaan

ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berooki
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan
dil jawaan hain aarzoo jawaan
ek nazar idhar bhi meharbaan
kab talak ye hamse berukhi
kab talak rahegi chup jubaan

I was pleasantly surprised to see here that, what was supposed to be the ‘ notes for pad’ as an accompaniment to the lyrics of this song, has been upgraded as a a write up. I am honoured.

Coming back on Jaidev, I always felt that music for him was more a passion than a commercial venture. He remained bachelor but was wedded to music until his death. In later years, he was mostly associated with providing music to art films ( as against mainstream films) and composing music for non-filmy albums of ghazals and devotional songs. He also composed music for Harivash Rai Bachchan’s magnum opus ‘Madhushala’. I feel, in his musical works, he must have followed Bhagwat Geeta philosophy – ‘Karmaneye wadhikaraste ma phaleshu kada chana’ , roughly meaning ‘keep on performing your duties without expectations or rewards’. I read somewhere that he did not own a house in Mumbai and stayed as a paying guest until his death.

Although this song may not have become very popular in those days, I get a feeling that orchestration of this song may have inspired Shankar-Jaikishan while composing https://atulsongaday.me/2011/04/06/tum-to-dil-ke-taar-chhedkar/ and Ravi https://atulsongaday.me/2008/12/17/aage-bhi-jaane-na-tu/

Thanks a lot for the details of the film.
It is a news to me that Kumkum in this film was different than the one I am familiar with.

Kamath ji,
There was a slip in my writing.Kumkum is Govinda’s mauseri/khaleri behan( means their mothers were sisters).

Sadanand ji,

Couple of corrections to the lyrics.

The lines
ajeeb dard pyaar bhi,
ke geet bhi bahar bhi
nasha bhi ha khumar bhi,
fizaa bhi hai bahaar bhi

Should read
ajeeb shai hai pyaar bhi,
ke jeet bhi hai haar bhi
nasha bhi ha khumar bhi,
khizaan bhi hai bahaar bhi

Again in the last antaraa, the line
fizaa bahaar ban gayee

should read
khizaan bahaar ban gayee

Regarding your comment on this song being one song or two different songs; recently I saw the 78 rpm record that has this song. The two sides of the record actually play like two distinct songs. One side has the entire solo singing part of Talat. The second side has the duet, with a slightly different beginning, in that there is the lead in mukhdaa by Talat, just before Asha’s voice starts to sing the same mukhdaa.

Unless this is a spliced version of the two sides of the 78 rpm record (seems unlikely since there is a very small difference), it seems more like the sound track version and indeed the song could be one long song. But then my mind says, if someone has the sound track from the film footage, why didn’t he / she post the video of the full song. I wonder.
