Shaharyar, who died on 13th february 2012 wrote lyrics in only half a dozen movies, but his output as a movie lyricist was of a high calibre, as befitting a Jnanpeeth award winner, the highest literary award in India.
“Faasle” (1985) is one of the few movies where Shahryar wrote lyrics. This Yashraj Films movie was produced and directed by Yash Chopra. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Rekha, Rohan kapoor(Singer Mahendra Kapoor`s son), Farha Naaz, Deepti Naval, Farooque Sheikh, Sushma Seth, Raj kiran, Javed Khan, Huma Khan, Daljit Kaur,Aloknath etc.
Here is a superb song from this movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and its music is composed by Shiv Hari.
Prakashchandra, who sent me the lyrics of this song, informs me that only one para of the song is picturised and this picturisation takes place on on Sunil Dutt, Rekha, Rohan Kapoor and Farha Naaz as a boat song. Mr Sadanand Kamath pointed out the video link to the full song.

(NOTE: chand = few, small numbers
giley = plural of ‘gilaah’, regret, disappointment
Life once past, appears as if it was a game of few moments – and then one departs. But the weight of all the regrets and disappointments, of the things not done, of things that could have been done better or differently, seems too much for a life that lasted “a few moments”).

pyaar karne ke ye siley hain bahut
(Ah, but what is the rewards of love?)
A sweet memory, maybe two
And a desolation of ages
These are the gifts
Of being in love
(NOTE: yaadein = memories
tanhaayee = loneliness, desolation
siley – plural of ‘silaah’, meaning reward, gift, compensation etc.
The poet expresses the emptiness and the unreality of love. Separation is the truth, eventually, and all one is left with are memories, and loneliness)

Look deep into
The looking glass of eyes
Fields of blossoming flowers
Stretch out a long distance
(NOTE: The theme of this verse is dreams. Blossoming flowers are the dreams that reside behind the mirror of the eyes. So much of the life may have passed, and yet the dreams, the longings and desires, are still so fresh, and so numerous).

and the meaing of “darmiyaan” in the context of this song???

I think…
“siley” = “method”
“Faasle” = “The distance between us”
“darmiyaan” = “in-between”
As we meet more often (more frequently) but the in between time (of our separation from each other) seems to be longer than our next meeting time comes.
This is my pharse I often use…”Am I RIGHT or right?” 🙂
