“Sohni Mahiwal” (1958) was a Chaudhary Arts Production movie and it was directed by Raja Nawathe. Starcast of the movie included names like Bharat Bhushan, Nimmi, Kumar, Achla Sachdev, Mukri, Lotan, Chand Burque, Om Prakash etc.
Nimmi, the leading lady of this movie was born on 18th february 1933 and so today (18th february 2012) is her 79th birthday. Born as Nawab Banoo, she was the daughter of Wahidan, who was also a noted Actress-Singer in Hindi movies of 1930s. Making her debut with “Barsaat” (1949), Nimmi continued to act till 1965 when she appeared in her last movie as a leading role in “Aakashdeep” (1965). Much later she was also seen in “Love and God” (1986). Among the leading ladies of 1940s and 1950s, she is perhaps the only survivor.
On the occasion of her 79th birthday, here is this song from “Sohni Mahiwaal” (1958). This song is a duet which is sung by Rafi and Lata. The song is picturised on Bharat Bhushan and Nimmi. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and music is composed by Naushad.

Mani ji,
A small correction. Nimmi plays the role of the daughter of a businessman. Her father has some business dealings with Ashok Kumar. Ashok Kumar plays the role of an industrialist in this film. The song that you mention – it is in this song that Ashok Kumar and Nimmi meet each other (in the film). Subsequently the two are attracted to each other and get married.

Nanda was the heroine in ‘Aakash Deep’. Nimmi had a significant role as Dharmendra’s mute sister. There’s a beautiful scene where she puts on a record (78 Rpm) on the record player. The song, ‘Dil ka diya, jalake gaya, yeh kaun meri tanhayee me…’ is sung by Lata. Nimmi moves her lips….
