Tu mere pyaar ka phool hai

Most Hindi movies deal with safe topics because dealing with “unsafe” topics are fraught with dangers. and when one’s own career may be at stake then obviously few movie makers can be expected to venture into potentially risky topics.

B R Chopra was a pioneer as far as tacking potentilly risky subjects were concerned. He made “Sadhana” (1958) on the topic of a kothewaali aspiring for a life of matrimony and social acceptance. He was advised by well meaning established movie makers that he was risking his career. B R Chopra pulled it off and “Sadhana” (1958) to this date is regarded as a pathbreaking movie.

His next venture was no less risky. It was on the topic of unwed motherhood. The movie was “Dhool Ka Phool” (1959). And much to B R Chopra’s and the movie goers credit, this movie too was a box office success.

Music of “Sadhana” (1958) and “Dhool Ka Phool” (1959) played an important role in the success of these movies. The songs of these movies were as hard hitting as the story lines demanded. For instance, who can forget the hard hitting “Sadhana” (1958) songs Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko and Kaho ji tum kya kya khareedoge.

Both these movies had the same musical team, viz Sahir Ludhianvi as the lyricist and N Datta as the music director. “Dhool Ka Phool” (1959) discusses the tribulations of an unwed mother (played by Mala Sinha), who is literally left holding the baby as her lover (played by Rajendra Kumar) ditches her and marries a rich man’s daughter (Nanda) as wished by his father.

Being an unwed mother is a big stigma for the woman, and a bigger stigma for the innocent child who had no say in the matter. If one needed to get a lyricist to write a song to express the feelings of the unwed mother, then Sahir Ludhianvi was just the lyricist, and he did a wonderful job, coming up with simple sounding , and yet extremely effective lyrics. Lata has sung this song with feeling and the music provided just the right ambience. The picturisation, showing a baby, oblivious to the stigma attached with his birth, and a concerned and sad and yet strong willed Mala Sinha contemplating what lies ahead in store for her and for the baby- one’s heart goes out to them, even though one knows fully well that it is just a movie and that too a movie produced more than half a century ago. At least that is the effect this movie in general and this song in particular has on me. I have watched this movie once and I cannot bear to watch this movie again.

Here is this superbly created song from a wonderful movie. It is a masterpiece indeed.

Song-Tu mere pyaar ka phool hai (Dhool Ka Phool) (1959) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-N Datta

Lyrics

hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm

tu mere pyaar kaa phool hai
ke meri bhool hai
kuchh kah nahin sakti
par kisi kaa kiyaa tu bharey
ye sah nahin sakti
tu mere pyaar kaa phool hai
ke meri bhool hai
kuchh kah nahin sakti
par kisi kaa kiyaa tu bharey
ye sah nahin sakti

meri badnaami tere saath palegi,
saath palegi
sun sun taaney meri kokh jalegi,
haay kokh jalegi
meri badnaami tere saath palegi
saath palegi
sun sun taane meri kokh jalegi
haay kokh jalegi
kaanton bhare hain sab raaste
tere vaaste
jeewan ki dagar mein
kaun banegaa teraa aasraa
bedard nagar mein

tu mere pyaar kaa phool hai
ke meri bhool hai
kuchh kah nahin sakti
par kisi kaa kiyaa tu bhare
ye sah nahin sakti

poochhegaa koi to kise baap kahegaa,
baap kahegaa
jag tujhe phenkaa huaa paap kahegaa,
haaye paap kahegaa
poochhegaa koi to kise baap kahegaa,
baap kahegaa
jag tujhe phenkaa huaa paap kahegaa,
haaye paap kahegaa
banke rahegi sharmindagi
teri zindagi
jab tak tu jiyegaa
aaj pilaaun tujhe doodh main,
kal zahar piyegaa

tu mere pyaar kaa phool hai
ke meri bhool hai
kuchh kah nahin sakti
par kisi kaa kiyaa tu bhare
ye sah nahin sakti

For its time, ‘Dhool ka phool’ was certainly a movie with a very socially relevant theme. Mala Sinha, Rajendra Kumar, Nanda and Manmohan Krishna did a commendable job! The songs were great!

Sahir’s lyrics in this song is like freshly picked flowers woven in the soft music of N Datta to make it a delicate but beautiful garland.
I have rated this song 5 star without listening to it. Such songs drain me emotionally.
A somewhat similar sentiments are expressed in another Sahir’s song “tere bachpan ko jawaani ki duaa deti hoon” from MUJHE JEENE DO (1963).
