Dekh li teri khudaayi

Posted on: February 22, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contrbutor to this blog.

In Hindi film industry, there were producers/directors who initially started their careers as lyricists but over a period of time, they ventured into film production. As far as I know, this trend started with Kidar Sharma who joined New Theatres as a still photographer and a set painter before switching over to lyricist and dialogue writer. He was followed by P L Santoshi, Nakhshab, Jaan Nisar Akhtar, Shailendra, Gulzar to give a few examples.

The names I mentioned above are all poets or poetic in nature. Poetry is a form of expression and taking this as a clue, I guess, these poets wanted to use the medium of cinema which has much wider canvass than the poetry for expressing their thoughts and opinions. In a way, there is some commonality between a poet and a film’s script/dialogue writer. A poetry is not about what is said but how it is said. In a same way, for script/dialogue writer, a story is not about what is narrated but how it is to be narrated.

Nyaya Sharma was one of the poets and lyricists who also jumped on the bandwagon of film production by producing his first film ( and the last) KINAARE KINAARE (1963). The film took a long time to complete and by the time it was released in 1963, Dev Anand had been typedcast in public mind as more of a flamboyant star than what was projected in this film. At the same time, Meena Kumari’s fortunes as a lead star were on the declining trajectory. The film got the poor response from the audience and with this, the fate of Nyaya Sharma as a film producer was sealed.

A search in the websites revealed that before becoming a film producer, Nyaya Sharma had penned lyrics for only one film, viz ANJALI (1957). In all, he wrote lyrics for only 3 Hindi films and incidentally Jaidev was the music director for all these films. He also wrote many non-filmy ghazals most of which were set to tune by Jaidev.

I could get a count of 7 songs of KINAARE KINAARE on YT, four of which have already been discussed in this blog. All these songs are melodious and hummable. I understand that there were 10 songs in the film. As many as 8 playback singers were used for song recordings – Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Sudha Malhotra.

The most popular song of this film was ‘dekh li teri khudaayi bas dil mera bhar gayaa’ sung by Talat Mehmood. The song was written by Nyaya Sharma and composed by Jaidev. This song was deleted from the film and is not in the film’s VCD that I have. So only the audio clip is available of this song.

This song is regarded as one of the best among Talat Mehmood’s poignant songs. It was included in the HMV’s LP on Talat Mehmood titled ‘In a Blue Mood’ brought out in 1970s.

Song-Dekh li teri khudaayi (Kinaare Kinaare)(1963) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Nyay Sharma, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics

dekh li teri khudaai
bas meraa dil bhar gayaa
dekh li teri khudaai
teri rehmat chup rahi
teri rehmat chup rahi
main rote rote mar gayaa
dekh li teri khudaai

mere maalik kyaa kahoon
teri duaaon kaa fareb
mere maalik kyaa kahoon
teri duaaon kaa fareb
mujh pe yoon chhaayaa ki mujhko
mujh pe yoon chhaayaa ki mujhko
ghar se beghar kar gayaa
dekh li teri khudaai

wo bahaaren naach uthhin thhin
jhoom uthhi thhin badaliyaan
wo bahaaren naach uthhin thhin
jhoom uthhi thhi badliyaan
apni kismat yaad aate
apni kismat yaad aate
hi meraa ji bhar gayaa
dekh li teri khudaayi
bas mera dil bhar gayaa
dekh li teri khudaai
teri rehmat chup rahi
teri rehmat chup rahi
main rote rote mar gayaa
dekh li teri khudaai

Kamath ji,
Thank you for posting this gem, which I like very much.
Please note that this song was NOT removed from the film and is still in it.Many times it is observed that for various reasons songs and scenes are deleted from the VCD/DVD s,but it should not be construed that these songs or scenes are deleted from the film itself.
Kinare Kinare had total 11 songs. There were 9 singers. One singer Vinod Desai is missing from your list. His song ” oh mast nazar,tu chahe agar ” is very melodious.
Nyaya Sharma wrote lyrics for 5 films, namey Kinare kinare,Anjali-57(he had also written its story),Sunehare kadam-66,Hamare gham se mat khelo-67 and mandir-48.
As you have rightly pointed out Jaidev was MD for 3 films of his lyrics.

Kamath ji,
This song was filmed on Dev Anand.
KINARE KINARE-1963 took almost 6 years in its making. The story of its delay is as interesting as the film’s story itself.
Nyay Sharma was sailing very smooth when he launched this film with all the dates of lead pairs,a good free location for shooting, enough money and everything else needed to finish the film in 3 months.Unfortunately, his main cameraman-Nagnath-died mysteriously while shooting the film. There were police enquiries and the shooting stopped for several months, finishing all the secured dates of Dev Anand and Meena ji.during this period, even his money exausted and he was about to shelve the film, when Dev Anand sent M/s Dhun Investments P.Ltd,to provide finance and once again the film shooting started. Finally after 6 years film was released, but with disastrous returns
KINARE KINARE is a tale of the misfortunes of an young man Kanwal(Dev Anand),who after graduation, returns to his village. One day he comes accross a vagabond trying to rape a village girl.he intervenes, there is a fight and the goon is killed by him in self defence. There is an eyewitness, but he runs away with fear.To save himself, kanwal leaves the village and goes to another village where fe faints with high fever.Nilu(Meena Kumari),daughter of a retired person nurses him to health. They fall in love. The village dada manohar singh also loves Nilu and hence is after Kanwal and threatens him about the old murder.Kanwal again runs away to Bombay.
Here also he saves a Seth from crooks and gets a job of his secretary.Usha, bosses girl friend starts loving kanwal. When Nilu comes to Bombay for her Heart treatment, she meets kanwal and the reunite, but manohar singh, who has followed Nilu reports kanwal to Police and he is arrested.
The rest of the story is how Nilu and Kanwal’s friend Mithu, save Kanwal by locating the missing eyewitness and release Kanwal finally to marry Nilu.

Thanks a lot.
This film may be one of the rare instances where delay was due to a police case.
I really feel sorry for Nyaya Sharma. Being a poet, he must have gone through many emotional upheavals during the making of this film.
