It is a commonly held view that obscure movies and songs are those that were created long long ago. But that is not always the case. There could be movies and songs that may have ended up as obscure even if they may have been created as late as in 1980 !
Indeed, the song under discussion is from 1980, which I regard as the year when the end of the golden era of hindi movie began.
I had never heard this song, nor had I heard the name of the movie this song is from. But when I heard the song, I wondered how a song like this can end up in such obscurity.
Here is this forgotten gem from “Ramu To Deewaana Hai” (1980). This song is sung by Mukesh, and it must be regarded as one of the best songs that Mukesh may have sung in his career. Mukesh was dead by the time this movie was released, so this song must be one of the last songs sung by him.
Chandru Atma is the lyricist as well as the music director of this song.
With this song, I welcome another lyrics contributor to our musical bandwagon. The lyrics of this rare song were sent to me by Mr Nitin Shah. I am sure he will introduce us to some more wonderful forgotten gems in future, if this song is any indication.

Atul ji,
RAMU TO DEEWANA HAI is a mystery film.
There is hardly any info available about this film on the internet.
What I know about this film is that it was a film made in the late 70s.
The director,Music Director and Lyricist of this film was CHANDRU.
The cast of this film was Chandru,Deepa Rani and I.S.Johar.
It remained an unreleased film.
There is no mention of this film in the HFGK under 1980 or earlier,but it is listed by Hamraz ji in his HINDI TALKIE INDEX-1988 to 2010,as a film released in 2001.
8 songs of this films are found on Youtube.Songs are rendered by Mukesh,Kishore kumar,Suman Kalyanpur and also duets of Suman and Mukesh.
I think,this CHANDRU is not Chandru Atma because-
1. Chandru Atma was born on 17-9-1938 at Karachi.He was the younger brother of C.H.Atma.His voice had a resemblance to KLSaigal,more that CHAtma.Chandru Atma,though he sang for few hindi films,specialised in Devotional and Sindhi songs.
2.He must be around 40+ in the year 1980,rather too late for a lead role in a film.
3.Nowhere in his bio,this film is mentioned.
4.He had a successful singing career of 45 years before he died,but he was not known to be a film actor(except few small roles).
I think this Chandru is a different one.

It could well be a different person. But while searching for information about this movie, I found that Hamara Forum describes Chandru Atma as the lyricist and music director of this movie. We certainly need more information to be certain.

I am writing in short (One line)
Film started in B & W in sixties. Dropped making in B&W
and started again in colour
Films LP was in the market during 1980’s
Film was censored in 2001 , possibly not released
Chandru is not chandru Atma. But relative of
Arjun Hingorani. …….
I have reproduced only the relevent part here.So this atleast clarifies the doubt about CHANDRU.

I have seen an ad.on the front page of SCREEN( a weekly hindi movie paper) publishing mainly mukesh`s photo(in that ad), announcing the release of music cassette which had title “Raamu tho deewanaa hai)in mid 80`s.

रामु तो दीवाना है के गाने किसी भी दृष्टि से सी एच् आत्मा जी से सम्बन्ध नही रखते।रामु तो दीवाना है के एल्बम में लिरिक्स /म्यूजिक में मात्र “चंद्रु” ही लिखा है।वास्तव में ये अर्जुन हिंगोरानी के भाई थे, चंद्रु हिंगोरानी।चंद्रु ने अपना फ़िल्म कैरियर 1953 में राज कपूर के सहायक के रूप में आरम्भ किया था ।बाद में राज कपूर के दोस्त भी बन गए थे।फ़िल्म रामु तो दीवाना है में उनका गेस्ट अपीयरेन्स भी था,मगर राज कपूरजी से उनका विवाद होने के कारण राजकपूर जी का नाम फ़िल्म के टाइटल में शामिल नही किया था।चंद्र की फ़िल्म को 2000 में अर्जुन हिंगोरानी ने रिलीज़ करने की कोशिश की और गाने पहले LP रिकॉर्ड रिलीज हुए,बाद में सारेगामा के cd भी मार्किट में आये थे।

Thanks for incorporating my contribution and as prompted I shall endeavour and strive to give you all few more forgotten gems in the future
This was the song I heard when we were travelling in a car from Hyderabad to Indore back in 1985 after attending the marriage of my brother-in-law. In the evening @ 9 pm this song took me by surprise with the powerful and dardbhari voice of Mukesh. The car was snaking through some ghats and the atmosphere was eerie and dark outside; my hair stood on end and had gooseberries all over. I and my co-passengers heard this song through the night and marveled at the composition.
Since then I always hear all the soulful songs of Mukesh in dimlight of my bedroom with a glass of … to accentuate your feeling and to get the real feel of the songs by Mikesh. Let’s enjoy the song in the memory of HIM.
