Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Chupke chupke bol maina

Posted on: March 4, 2012

Most music lovers, including me, are aware of the music composed in Hindi movies, but only a small fraction of these music lovers have been exposed to NFS that were also created during the same era.

Listening to these songs takes opening of one’s mind and ears and then one finds oneself in a wonderful musical world that has been largely unexplored and unvisited. It is a different world altogether.

No, I am not abandoning the discussion of Hindi movie songs. It is just that I feel we need to discuss NFS at the same time. As it is, we have already made a beginning by discussing all the NFS sung by K L Saigal, and later we have discussed a few more such songs off and on.

One of the biggest names in the field of NFS has got to be Juthika Roy. She has sung a few film songs in Hindi and Bangla, but her forte was singing NFS, and she has been a behemoth in this field.

Here is a fantastic NFS sung by Juthika Roy. The lyrics are fantastic, but unfortunately I am not aware about the lyricist. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us about the lyricist of this song.
PS-Lyrics are by Faiyyaz Hashmi. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for this and many other details related to this song.

Music is composed by Kamal Dasgupta.

Here is this absolutely priceless gem from the world of NFS.

Song-Chupke chupke bol maina (Juthika Roy NFS) (1942) Singer-Juthika Roy, Lyrics-Faiyyaz Hashmi, MD-Kamal Dasgupta

Lyrics

chupke chupke bol maina
chupke chupke bol
tu chupke chupke bol maina
chupke chupke bol
saajan kab ghar aayenge
morey saajan
morey saajan kab ghar aayenge
tu chupke
tu chupke
tu chupke chupke bol maina
chupke chupke bol

soney ki bindiya
motiyan mala
naak ?? kab laayenge
soney ki bindiya
motiyan mala
naak ?? kab laayenge
saajan kab ghar aayenge
tu chupke
tu chupke
tu chupke chupke bol maina
chupke chupke bol

zari ki saadi
haath ka kangna
zari ki saadi
haath ka kangna
kab mujhko pehnaayenge
apni apni prem ki batiyaan
apni apni prem ki batiyaan
mil jul ham dohraayenge
saajan kab ghar aayenge
tu chupke
tu chupke
tu chupke chupke bol maina
chupke chupke bol

kisi pe bhed ye khulne na paaye
ae maina
na chhed chhed ke
koi rulaaye ae maina
tu jaanti hai ke kis des mein wo saajan hai
bata bata ke mujhe
chain ka ye maina
phir na bichhadne doongi unko
phir na bichhadne doongi unko
chain se din kat jaayenge
haan
chain se din kat jaayenge
saajan kab ghar aayenge
tu chup ke
tu chup ke
tu chupke chupke bol maina
chupke chupke bol

Atul ji,
The Lyrics to above song are by Fayyaz Hashmi.
FAYYAZ HASHMI is a name not known much in India. His name has come up here because some famous NFS of various singers are being posted nowadays.
Here is some info about this writer-
FAYYAZ HASHMI’s name was very famous in Eastern India in the 40s and 50s as a gifted song writer.
Fayyaz was born at Calcutta in 1926.His father was the Director of Madan Theatrs in Calcutta.Fayyaz wrote his first song in the 7th std. itself and he was participating in Mushayras from when he was in 9th std.
he wrote the famous song “tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi’ at the age of 17 yrs.Due to this song recording Talat Mehmood became All India famous. The popular Hemant kr. song “Bhala tha kitna apna Bachpan” was also written by Fayyaz.

He joined Gramophone co. at Dumdum in 1943 and was in calcutta upto 1948.Till 1947,Fayyaz had written about 1000 songs. His songs became popular as they combined Hindi,Urdu and sanskrit words. He also wrote in Purbi and Brij Bhasha.
He was transferred to Dhaka in 1948 and later to Pakistan(Lahore) in 1951,where he sttled permanantly.from 1956 he started writing for pak films and got hundreds of Awards, including all Top National Awards like Nigar Award etc.He wrote about 2000 songs.

The latest medium of communication then, a radio set, reached me in 1938. I discovered then the ethereal voice of the most revered, Kumari Juthika Roy, Padmashree awardee, aired from the gramophone records that she had been cutting since 1932 with her career having started in 1926 and humming since 1923.

She is 92, in the category of senior-most artists, like Manna Dey, Ravi Shankar , Pran and Zohra Sahgal who crossed 100. She continues to maintain the record of highest number of non-film records ever sold.

It is not my intention to challenge Arunkumar Deshmukh for whom I have the highest degree of respect. But, it is difficult to accept that Fayyaz joined Gramophone company in a responsible position of a resident lyricist, at the age of seventeen as suggested by him. He was a genius without doubt and could have joined the company at the age of 20 as is generally believed. So, I suggest that his year of birth must be taken as 1920 and not 1926 as suggested by sh. Deshmukh. His father, Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Dilgeer was himself a colorful personality, a play-write and a poet and a scholar who knew eight languages, Indian and international. He was living in Calcutta, next to the house of Indian Shakespeare, i.e., Agha Hashra Kashmeri and was friendly to him. The genius of Fayyaz lies in the atmosphere he inherited where great artists of Parsi theater like Fida Hussein visited frequently. I have a faint idea that Fayyaz died somewhere in 1911. Kamal Dasgupta was not a muslim by birth. He converted to Islam in Dhaka mainly to facilitate his marriage with Feeroza Beum, a well known singer and a master of Nazrul geeti, of the earlier half of the 20th century for whom he had a soft corner from the very beginning.

Kanti Mohan Sharma ji,

Thanks a lot for pointing out the discrepancies in my above comments on F.Hashmi.
He was born in 1920 and joined GCI in 1940 at the age of 20 years. Talat’s record ‘ sab din ek samaan nahi the ‘ came in 1941.
Sometimes, such silly mistakes do take place in a hurry to type on the computer. This is not an excuse. A mistake is a mistake.

Thanks once again. Readers have a right to get the correct info.
