“Reshma aur Shera” (1971) was a movie produced and directed by Sunil Dutt. Starcast of the movie incuded names like Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Amitabh Bachchan, Jayant, Sulochana, Amrish Puri, Dulari, Sudhir, B. B. Bhalla, Guddy, Padma Khanna, Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Rakhee Gulzar, K. N. Singh etc.
On paper it looks like a multistarrer, but that was not so. Vinod Khanna and an up and coming actor those days and Amitabh Bachchan was a struggler. Vinod Khanna looked dashing even then, whereas looking at Amitabh Bachchan, the first thought that came to one’s mind was- ” how can a person as horrible looking as him ever make it in movies”. But amazingly, the same horrible looking fellow went on to become a superstar of Hindi movies in a few years time. When “Reshma Aur Shera” (1971) was re released later, Amitabh Bachchan’s face was displayed prominently with his usual superstar like mannerism, and those who went to watch thew movie expecting to see Amitabh Bachchan were left disappointed.
The movie was different and it failed at the box office. The music of this movie was good (and different) and as a result, the music too failed to become popular enough to get played in Binaca geetmala.
Now, after the passage of four decades, we can savour the music of this movie without being constrained by facts like its popularity etc. The music of the movie was nice on its own merit, so what if the records of this movie did not sell. Fortunately, technology has changed and songs can now be judged by playing them online, without needing to purchase their records.

Never realised this was such a beautiful song. In a scene in this film Sunil Dutt shoots his own father who insults his mother. This was one of the most powerful and emotive scenes I have seen in Hindi movies. Left a lasting impression on me.

On my visit to Jaipur, I kept thinking of this song. Parts of this song were filmed in Hawa Mahal (Maybe all of it, I can’t tell), a monument I fell absolutely in love with.
I haven’t seen the movie, but I love ALL its song. As far as I remember, the long playing song Tu Chanda mein chandni used to play so often on the radio, so I don’t think the music flopped.
