Suno sunaayen aaj tumhen ek chhoti si kahaani

“Agra Road” (1957) is not a movie too many people remember today. This was a B grade movie which was a Nagina Films Presentation. It was directed by Ravindra Dave. the movie had Vijay Anand, Shakila, Nanda, Satish Vyas, Krishnakant, Dhumal, Bhagwan, Amarnath, Nazi etc in it.

One delightful well researched review on this movie has been written by Madhu (dustedoff) in her blog. Going through the review, it appears that Ravindra Dave did some serious cost cutting and instead of hiring people by paying them money, he requisitioned his relatives to work free for him. Thus we find various Daves credited as assisting in direction, photography, editing etc etc even if they did not have a clue what they were supposed to do.

He thankfully did not ask one of his relatives to compose music otherwise we would not be discussing the music of this movie here. Roshan was signed up as the music director. There are indications that even he was not paid his dues, and as a result, he had to cut corners. But even after cutting corners, Roshan came up with some superb compositions in the movie. Some of these compositions were “inspired” from the west, but what inspirations they were.

I have already discussed three songs and what delightful compositions they are. Unse rippi tippi ho gayi , Ghazab huaa Raam zulam huaa Raam and Duniya ki nazar hai buri zulfein na sanwaara karo. These are so good that the movie did not desrve to have such great compositions in it.

I found that that there is another great composition in this movie. The situation is that the two sisters (played by Nanda And Shakila) want to cheer up a person and so they sing a funny song to cheer him up. In that song they tell him their own tale.

One would expect the two ladies to sing the song in two different voices, but the maker of the movie was into serious economy measures, as noted above. So he only permitted one singer to be employed to sing for both ladies. And so we find one single singer, viz Asha Bhonsle singing for both. One must say that Asha Bhonsle has done a superb job. In fact I feel that this song must be regarded as one of the best songs that she has ever sung.

Here is this song extraordinaire, which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and composed by Roshan. Bharat Vyas, normally known for penning religious /semi classical songs shows that he could write light hearted stuff too, if need so arose. And he has done a wonderful job in writting this fun song.

Overall, it is a fantastic song which unfortunately has been forgotten with time. Here is this out and out fun song that deserves to be much better known among music lovers.
PS-It turns out that this song has a sad version too. so that makes this song a multiple version song.

Song-Suno sunaayen aaj tumhen ek chhoti si kahaani (Agra Road)(1957) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

Suno sunaayen aaj tumhen
ek chhoti si kahaani
ek baap ki do do beti
ek saanwri ek gori
jaise champa chameli ho
kabhi na rahen akeli ho
ho jee ho jee ho
jee ho jee ho o

ek hamaara baapu
lamba coat daal ke dole
coat daal ke dole
coat ke button kabhi na khole
coat ko pehan raat bhar sole
oopar se wo kadwa bole
kahaan hai muniya
kahaan hai chuniya
bheetar misri ghole
muniya chuniya
tum ho meri duniya
daulat waala aa aa
himmat waala aa aa
mooncho wala lala
jiski oonchi haweli ho
jahaan ham karen athhkheli ho
ho jee ho jee ho
jee ho jee ho

ek kaaghzi pehalwaan
jo bana munim hamaara
bana munim hamaara
pehan ke ainak pyaara pyaara
phira karta hai maara maara
ghar waalon ne phikar na ki
haay haay haay
isko kaun jagmein byaahe
to abtak phire kanwaara
kahe haay haay haay
dukh saha na jaye
bhed na khole
chup chup dole
haule haule bole
jaise ganguwa teli ho
ki jiski akal mareli ho
ho jee ho jee ho
jee ho jee ho ho

ek hamaari behan hai jiske
dil ki ho gayi chori
dil ki ho gayi chori
gale mein padee preet ki dori
phire ab uljhi uljhi gori
bapu man hi man mein soche
hatt tere ki
dhatt tere ki
gayi haath se chhori
chupke chupke
mile chhup chhup ke
iska saiyya bada hai kainyya
pade hain iske painyya
jab bhi dekhe akeli ho
ke julmi poochhe paheli ho
ho jee ho jee ho
jee ho jee ho
suno sunaayen aaj tumhen
ek chhoti si kahaani
ek baap ki do do beti
ek saanwri ek gori
jaise champa chameli ho
kabhi na rahen akeli ho
ho jee ho jee ho
jee ho jee ho

Thank you for the trackback, Atul! And yes, I agree with you completely: thank goodness the Daves were not roped in to compose the music too. Roshan did a great job of it, and this one is a good example of it. Another of my favourites from Agra Road (besides, of course Unse rippi-tippi ho gayi) is the battle-of-the-sexes song, O mister o mister suno ek baat:

I am in fact extremely surprised how music directors of those days could create great music even in rubbish movies. Seeing such music go down the drain for no fault must be quite painful for the music directors, I am sure.

Yes, it’s a shame when the movies sank without a trace, along with their usually superb music. There are exceptions, of course (like Saranga or Parasmani), where despite the sheer absurdity or boringness of the movie, the music was great enough to stand out on its own.

There is also a sad version of this song picturised on Nanda.

Surprisingly, Ravindra Dave did not attempt cost cutting in this song. The lyrics are different in both the versions 🙂
