Darr laage garje badarwa

Posted on: April 8, 2012

“Ram Rajya” (1967) was a Shri Prakash Pictures production. It was directed by Vijay Bhatt. Starcast of the movie had Badri Prasad, Bhavna, Kumar Sen, Bina Rai, Anil Kumar, Kanhaiyalal, Ved Puri, Manjari, Snehlata, Aruna Rai, Jay, Vijay etc in it.

Here is a lovely song from this movie. It is sung by Lata. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist and Vasant Desai composed the music.

According to a YT comment, this song is based on Raag Malhaar. Seeing that this song talks of thunderstorms, this fact could well be true, but other comments in YT are needed to be takes with huge dollops of salt. One commentor exclaims- “Lata sings for Shobhana Samarth, Kajol grandmother. Unbelievable !” This commentator obviously cannot differentiate between “Ram Rajya” (1943) and “Ram Rajya” (1967). Shobhana Samarth had acted in “Ram Rajya” (1943) as Seeta. The same role in “Ram Rajya” (1967) was played by Bina Rai.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Darr laage garje badariya (Ram Rajya)(1967) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Vasant Desai

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

darr laaage
darr laage garje badariya
darr laage garje badariya
saawan ki rut kajraari kaari

ab kaa karoon kit jaaoon
mohe chhod gaye saanwariya
darr laage garje badariya

meha barse naina tarse
pyaasa manwa tuhj ko pukare
aachara bheege

jiyara mein jalte angaare
ab kaha karu
ab kaha karu kit jaaoon
mori suni haaye sejariya
dar laage garje badariya
sawan ki rut kajrari kaari
sawan ki rut kajrari kaari
chamke matwari bijuriya
chamke matwari bijuriya
ab kaha karu kit jaaoon
mohe chhod gaye saawariya
dar laage garje badariya
dar laage

Atul,
It is not only the YT commentators who make silly mistakes, the VCD manufacturer of this film has also committed silliest mistakes.

A few days back, I had gone to search for the VCD of Ram Rajya (1943) but I could not get anywhere in Mumbai. But VCDs of Ram Rajya (1967) were available. So I settled for the later. There was, however, a mistake on the VCD cover. It has credited Shanker-Jaikishan as MD instead of Vasant Desai. The VCD labels had pictures of Kumar Sen and Bina Rai. When I played the VCDs, I was shocked (but later pleasantly surprised) to find that the VCDs were of Ram Rajya (1943).

Apart from being happy that I got what I intended to buy, a further bonus is that I now have collector’s item in my hand 🙂

Below is the picture of VCD Label

Waah, great. So the VCD manufacturers themselves are not aware that they had a goldmine in their hands. Or perhaps they were aware but they thought that old was dust so let us palm off 1943 movie as 1967 movie. If only one can come across gems of 1930s and 40s that way.

That is some story, what a goldmine came into your hands, and such a big blunder by label makers!

Nevertheless, I do love this Lata song,
