Naina jo nainon se miley

Posted on: April 21, 2012

“Daku Bhupat” (1960) is an extremely obscure movie by now. The movie was a Jalaruha Production movie. Ramesh Gupta was the director and the movie had N T Rama Rao, Anjali Devi, Ramesh Kumar, Nandu, Majmudar etc in it. It appears that the movie was a remake of some hit Telugu movie, or perhaps dubbed version of the Telugu movie. Not just the actors of Telugu movie industry, even singers from South Indian movie industry were used in this movie. In other words, the songs were resung in Hindi by South Indian singers and used in the Hindi version.

Here is a duet from this movie which is sung by P Susheela and P B Srinivas, who are both playback legends of South Indian movies by now. It is nice to know that they gave playback singing in a Hindi movie too.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by S L Merchant.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt who discovered this song and brought this song to my notice. This song is a forgotten gem and music lovers will love to listen to this song.

I have heard this song before. Or is it because it sounds uncannily like Hemant & Lata duet in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje> Nain se nain miley. Even the words are same. It is a wholesale lift. Even PB and Suheela sounds like Hemant and Lata, more so PB.
It is possible that the producer ordered the MD and lyricist to produce a similar song as JJPB. It has also happened in case of film Ganga Jamuna Saraswati, the producer requested the MD Ram Laxman to produce a song similar to a song in his Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.
Another case was (Bipin) Babul; he was requested to come up with song like Awaara Hun and he did it with Mukesh himself; the song goes like … Awara hun Banjara hu.. xxx hu in film Reshmi Roomal
Even Raj Kapoor requested SJ to conjure up a song similar to Gujarati iconic song Tari Ankh no afini sung by Ninu Mazumdar. And the result is another iconic song Mera Joota hain Japani..

The Hemant song you referred, should read ‘nainon se nain naahin milao’ and hence is quite different.

Atul ji,
DAKU BHUPAT-1960 was a poor remake of a successful telugu movie. It was not a dubbed film. The Film was a Jalruha prodn. and directed by Ramesh gupta. However, the HFGK mentions the name of V.Raghavaiah as its director-he was the Telugu film’s director.
The word Daku seems to be a fav with Hindi movies. As many as 30 films having the word Daku-in the begining or at the end-in the title were made from 1937 to 1991.There was a Gentleman Daku,a Samundari Daku,a Daku Raja and also an Akhari Daku.Daku aur Bhagwan and Daku aur Mahatma along with Daku munni bai and Daku Hasina entertained people.
If you thought that this film is about the real Daku Bhoopat, who terrorised Gujarat state between 47 to 60,you are mistaken. This is a filmi Daku story.
DAKU BHUPAT and his gang looted the kingdom of Ramraj at the instigation of neighbouring enemy king Tribhuvan. In order to try changing the mind of Tribhuvan, the Prince of Ramraj,Jayachandra (NTRama Rao) sets out.On the way he is attacked by bandits, but a lovely damsel rescues him from the distress. She is Sridevi(Anjali devi) d/oTtribhuvan with nher mother Vimala(Girija). She dutifully, and with mother’s consent falls in love with the prince. They arrive at the fort and Prince, while talking to King Tribhuvan finds Bhupati’s bandits with loot.He quarrels with King and leaves angrily. However poor fellow somehow finds time to sing a song or two with Sridevi also.
Bhupati learns about their meeting and in fear of future danger decides to attack and capture Tribhuvan along with the Prince. This happens and again the lucky Prince is rescued by another damsel Ramani(Ragini),who is d/o Bhupati.Guess what ? She too loves the Prince. This is not digested by Kireet,a nephew of Bhupat who loves Ramani.
Rajguru Sadanand and Gajapathy attack thr fort to rescue Tribhuvan, but get killed along with Tribhuvan by Bhupat.
Now,Bhupat wants to marry Sridevi aa,but wonder of wonders, her mother Vimala is ready to marry Bhupat. On the day of marriage,Vimala kills Bhupat,Kireet kills Vimala and Prince kills Kireet.Hisab barabar !
In the same mandap(for economy purpose) Prince marries Sridevi and they live happily ever after! THE END.

I used to listen to this song quite often (about 50 years ago !!!) and I quite liked it. Partly because it appears to have been based on the classical Raag Bageshri (although my knowledge of Indian Classical is negligible). It also sounds very much like Hemantkumars ‘Jaag Dard-e-ishq jaag’
Thank you for uploading this song, I badly needed this as I am in process of giving some shape to my song collection and its lyrics are in my notebook but I did not have any other detail about it.
