Suno jee pyaari koyaliya boley

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I had never heard of the film SANYASI (1945) until a few months back. The film was produced under the banner of Kardar Productions and directed by A R Kardar. The cast included Shamim Bano, Amar, Shyam Kumar, Ghulam Mohammed. I checked the available songs on internet and found to my surprise that there were 10 songs in this film out of which 7 songs were sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali (both solo and duets). These songs were written by Pandit Madhur and set to music by Naushad. Other than these, I am not able to get other details about this film such as genre and box office success or otherwise of the film.

After listening to some of the songs from this film, I get a feeling that this film was produced in the wake of an overwhelming success of the film RATTAN (1944) in which almost all songs became super hits and Naushad became one of the topmost music directors. The singing and music composition styles of some of the songs of SANYASI (1945) are more or less similar to that of songs from RATTAN (1944). The song ‘sunoji pyaari koyaliyaa bole’ from the film SANYASI (1945) which I have selected for discussion is a good example of the similarity in orchestration of the song. The song is sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali and Amar. Only the audio clip is available of this song but I can make a guess that the song is picturised on Shamim Bano and Amar.

I feel sad that talented singers like Zohrabai Ambalewali, the popular playback singer of 40s got a raw deal from the Hindi film industry despite giving many hit songs especially during 1944-47. The rise of Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar also affected her singing career as happened with other playback singers like Rajkumari and Amirbai Karnataki. But unlike others, she chose an honourable exit from the Hindi film industry by concentrating on shaping the career of her daughter, the famous Kathak dancer Dr. Roshan Kumari. I understand that after her self-imposed retirement from Hindi film industry, she sang only during her daughter’s dance concerts.

With this lovely song, the film Sanyasi makes its maiden appearance into this blog.

Kamath ji,
thanks for a well written post on Sanyasi-45.
I would elaborate on 2 points.
1. The hero of Sanyasi was Ghulam Mohammed and NOT Amar.
Ghulam Mohd.is not much known to most people today.he was with ‘Imperial’ from 32 to 38,starting the career as a Villain in “Madhuri”-32.This is the same film from which india’s FIRST records for film songs were made.from 42 to 45 he was with Dalsukh Pancholi in Lahore and did Khandan,Zamindar and Shirin Farhad. Then he returned to Bombay and did another 20 odd films including,Sanyasi,Ek din ka sultan,Humjoli,Jugnu,Chhin le azaadi,Heer Ranjha etc etc. Then he shifted to Pakistan.
2. I would not say that the film industry gave a “raw deal” to Zohrabai.
Film music historians make 4 periods in the Hindi Films.
a)Sahgal period-1931 -1947
b)Lata-Rafi period 47-69
c)Kishore kumar period-70-85 and
d)Modern period-86 onwards.
one will find a distinct difference in the genre of singers and style of music in these periods.Singers who were popular in Sahgal period-not only Zohrabai- could not fit into the style of music that was made in the golden period and hence their demands were less.melancholi and sad songs were replaced by youthful fun songs full of melody.Even the composers of the periods were different. The tastes were changing and so,many wise singers and composers of each period made way graciously for the next incumbents in the susequent periods.
It is also Nature’s way of ” old order changeth for the new….”.
Therefore Zohrabai’s slow exit was a natural process like many others, the industry is not responsible for it.

You are correct as always. I missed the name of Ghulam Mohammed even though I was aware of him as a actor.

Thanks for correction.

True. Old generation gives way to new generation. As stated it happened with many singers. Immortal singer Surendranathji was one among them. He was very popular singer actor of bye gone era. He was contemporary of Saigal sahib. He admired Saigal sahib and his style of singing was like him too. He gave out many hit songs in his films. His movie Anmol Ghadi was a super duper hit apart from Bahrtruhari of 1944 and Lal haveli too. Later he excelled in Elan , Anokhi Ada, Dukhiyari, Maya Maschindra, Meri Kahani and many more. As time passed and as he entered fifties, music trend changed. Play back came to stay. Tastes changed. Downwrad trend in Hidi music became imminent. Music directors also changed their styles to make money. Sad songs were replaced by shriek songs. Every type of shout, shriek, mewing, cat calls, braying and neighing was accepted in Music. Surendra after Gawaiah in 1954called it a day and switched over to character roles and business where he established himself very well.He gave out three best songs in that film and called it a day. He was very wise and paved way for others. Sadly to day Music has sunk so low that it is an apology for music.Surendraji is still remembered along with Saigal sahib with affection by music lovers. all over the world.
