As I see in the “some stats” page, Lyricist poet Majrooh Sultanpuri has 525 songs in the blog, which is the highest so far for a lyricist in the blog. The word “Majrooh” could not have been his real name. It is the “takkhallus” (Pen name) of the poet. “Majrooh” means injured/pained or a someone broken hearted and in pain. Others may have a different view of this words meaning, but I hate to go to online dictionaries to find meanings of urdu words. I would rather go by the feel.
Right from Sehgal’s “gham diye mustaqil kitna naazuk hai dil” till late 70’s he was there making his presence felt through his lyrics or peotry. So many of my old favourite songs are tuning out to be songs written by Majrooh that it does not surprise me anymore. He teamed up with almost all the major music director of the Golden era, except maybe Naushad, and gave some of the most touching and original poetry to the hindi film music. I will leave a more in depth analysis regarding Majrooh Sultanpuri for some other time, and get on with the song in hand.
“Phir wohi dil laaya hoon” is full of wonderful, beautiful and colourful songs. Movie songs cannot be anymore colourful than these song. One of my aunts who was a film buff, had seen this movie in the theatre 25 times when it was released. The song “Banda parwar thaam lo jigar” is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the music is by O.P.Nayyar. O. P. Nayyar is unique not only for his signature style songs, which are recongnizable as his song, right from the beginning, but also for having a dubious distinction of never having Lata Mangeshkar sing a song for him. It is difficult to digest, but true.
The singer is Rafi, the soft spoken shy person, who could be heard with difficulty when he spoke very few words in his interviews recorded at different times. But give him a recording studio and a song composition, the world stopped to listen, spellbound. He sang the words “main jab gaaun geet suhaana, gaaye mere saathh zamaana” in 1946 and “tum mujhe yoon bhulaa na paaoge, jab kabhi bhi suno ge geet mere, sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge” in 1970 with the same humbleness and purity.
Yes, the song is question is a tonga song. I have sent lyrics of a few tonga songs which were posted here, and every time they tempted me to write a post. Now finally I am writing this post of the song picturized on Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh. This may not be a “dil mein chhupaa ke pyaar ka toofan le chale” or “maang ke saath tumhaara main ne maang liyaa sansaar” but melodious enough to hold its own.
And last, but not the least, this is the last song of this film which remained to be posted and it the title song of the movie too. And my sincere thanks to Arunkumar Deshmukh Sir, for reminding of this song.

Majrooh Sultanpuri has written songs for Naushad in ‘Shahjehan’ (1946).
You have mentioned in your write up that you will do some more in depth analysis about Majrooh Sultanpuri some other time. May I request you to consider writing it on the occasion of his death anniversary on May 24th?

Of course, Majrooh has written for Naushad too. He may have done a few more apart from”Shahjahan”. In fact mentioned the song “gham diye mustaqil kitna naazuk hai dil” of “Shahjahan”, without checking who is the MD !
May be what i meant by some other time, is i will leave it for somebody more capable of doing such in depth analysis 🙂 . As you have requested Sir, i will try to come up with some inspiring song.

The correct meaning of the word ‘parwar’ is one who cherishes, ne who nurtures, one who takes care, one who loves.
‘banda parwar’ means the cherisher of servants, or cherishers of people of lower standing. So a rich person who cares for his workers and cherishes them, he can be called by this epithet.
In a romantic scenario, the one who is presenting his or her plea, considers himself/herself to be at a lower status, as a follower, and hence is addressing the other person as ‘banda parwar’, alluding that he / she needs to be cared for and cherished by the other. 🙂
As for ‘parwardigaar’, this is an epithet for God. This word refers to one who cherishes, who nurtures and who cares for all.
‘parwar digaar e aalam’ is another extension of the same, one who cherieshes everyone, everything that exists in this creation. The word ‘aalam’ here alludes to the entire creation.

Talking of K L Saigal’s ‘Shahjahan’, did you know that in the well known ‘qawwali’ from that movie, “Mere sapnon ki rani,…” along with the great Saigal, there was the youthful voice of a newcomer? His name? Mohammed Rafi!

yes, you are right also. Jatin-Lalit has composed beautiful songs in that one. I was talking about the MS & Naushad as a duo like Sadanandji said about them in Shahjehan.

There are 2 points-
1. The real name of Majrooh was ASRAR HASAN KHAN,born in Sultanpur(dist-Azamgarh),U.P. on 1-10-1919.
you are right in saying that Majrooh(ghayal or wounded) was his pen name and as he was from Sultanpur so it was Sultanpuri.
2. He has written songs for Naushad for films like-
shahjehan-46
keemat-46
Naatak-47
Andaz-49
Saathi-68
Tangewala-72
Chambal ki Raani-79
Dharamkanta-82 and
Guddu-93.
Majrooh wrote songs for 56 Composers,some of them are absolutely unknown like Alok Ganguly-Voh din aayega(86),Tushar Bhatiya-Dil hai tumhara-91 and Andaz apna apna-94 and Binju Ali-Bonny-1991.

Guddu -93 was a movie where SRK was with Manisha Koirala. there was a song which went

GUDDU-93 was a film featuring SRK-Manisha Koirala,Mukesh Khanna,Dipti Naval,Vijayendra Ghatge etc.
I have not much info about Binju Ali,except that he acted and sang in Goonj-89.He could be related to Mehmood.

As far as BINJU ALI is concerned I have seen him in Kumar Gaurav,Juhi chawla movie GOONJ(He sang a good song in that movie “sama hai ye suhaana, akele tum ho, akele hum hain)(directed by Jalal agha & shot at locations of GOA)

A minor correction if I may. Sultanpur is a district by itself in U.P. and so is Azamgarh. As correctly stated, his family was from Sultanpur, so he took the name Sultanpuri.

Sultanpur became a district on 30-6-1980,much much later than MS was born there.The info pertains to the times he was born.

Regarding Sri Arunkumar Deshmukh’s reply to my comment on 30-Apr-2012, I would respectfully point out that Sultanpur is an old district of U.P., which existed from the nineteenth century, much before the time of Majrooh Sultanpuri’s birth. People of Sultanpur are very proud of him, so I just pointed out the error, which is otherwise not material. I am sorry if I spoke out of turn.

What you say about Sultanpur is right.The city and district of Sultanpur was totally destroyed in the 1857 Independence struggle and slowly,slowly Sultanpur Town was resettled.
However,Majrooh Sultanpuri was actually born in NIZAMABAD town of Azamgadh District(and NOT in Sultanpur as believed popularly),where his father was posted in the Police Dept.His family however belonged to Sultanpur and hence the name Sultanpuri.
All this info is available on Wikipedia freely.
Anyway thanks for your correct info.It is vital that any info which needs correction MUST be pointed out so that dessimination of incorrect info is curbed.Such corrections are welcome and I am thankful for it.
The info which I had given earlier is from a book’ Hindi filmon ke geetkar’ and looks like the book info will have to be corrected now.

banda parwar is one who maintains his devotees. Parvarish is how you are brought up.kunbaparvari or kunbaparasti is a negative term meaning nepotism. parvardigare aalam is master of the universe.

Please tell me the exact meaning of “banda parwar”
This word comes also in Lata Anpadh song”aapki nazron ne samjhaa”- “banda parwar shukriya”
Then again in a different form in Hatim tai song:

“banda parwar” could mean “ur Majesty” in the context of this song. and i always thought “Parwar digaar-e-aalam” was a way to address “allah” or god almighty

You got the meaning and context right. “aalam” means the universe. “aalam” has another meaning too, i.e. condition or state – “kaifiyat”. Both words start with different alphabets in Urdu.
