Tu ne teri nazar ne mujhe kaafir banaa diyaa

Posted on: May 4, 2012

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Here is a another duet, which is rare in the sense few people might have heard it. It is from a film called “Fariyaad” (1964). A few songs from this film are posted in the blog. This music of this film is composed by Snehal Bhatkar, and this song is written by Kedar Sharma. As I see in the list of songs moviewise three songs are already posted. So this is the fourth song to be posted. Another duet “Apne huzoor mujhe kya se kya banaa diyaa” was posted a few days ago (Post by Sadanand Kamathji).

In that Kamathji has raised a question that it would be interesting to know if the lyrics were written first or the tune was composed given to the lyricist to write the song. That question has often crossed my mind too. Sometimes the song is so following the words that it appears as if it was written first and set to tune later. This mostly happens with Ghazals.

I had read in the memoirs of Laxmikant-pyarelal that mostly songs were prepared by the team of lyricist/md in joint brain storming session, much like it is happens in the corporate conference rooms, wherein ideas are exchanged, thrashed about until the desired result is achieved. But in the music field if an idea is not suitable for a particular situation in a film it will be for next one or the next one. So they were never wasted, just kept in abeyance for future use.

I found this song to be very melodious and very well composed and sung. The voice of Mubarak Begum is a such that it stands out as some thing different and unique. Rafi is as such Rafi, and he sounds divine as only he can. There is video link to be found on Youtube of this song. I was able to find 2-3 audio links, but they were all incomplete. I looked elsewhere to find the complete song. I found the audio elsewhere but that is also incomplete, in the sense that it adds one stanza by Mubarak Begum but deletes one staza by Rafi.

Audio (Three stanzas of Rafi and one stanza of Mubarak Begam)

Video (Two stanzas of Rafi and two stanzas of Mubarak Begam)

Song-Tu ne teri nazar ne mujhe kaafir banaa diyaa (Fariyaad)(1964) Singers-Rafi, Mubarak Begam, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Snehal Bhatkar

Lyrics

tu ne teri nazar ne to kaafir banaa diyaa
mujhe kaafir banaa diyaa
hans kar rulaa diyaa
kabhi ro kar hansaa diyaa
kabhi ro kar hansaa diyaa aa
tu ne teri nazar ne

qadmon ki khaak pe hain
bahaaron ke baadshaah
bahaaron ke baadshaah
qadmon ki khaak pe hain
bahaaron ke baadshaah
bahaaron ke baadshaah
veeraan ghar ko aap ne
jannat banaa diyaa
ae ji jannat banaa diyaa aa
tu ne teri nazar ne

dil thha bujhaa bujhaa
badi be-kaif thhi hayaaat
badi be-kaif thhi hayaat
dil thha bujhaa bujhaa
badi be-kaif thhi hayaaat
badi be-kaif thhi hayaat
laila teraa karam
mujhe majnu banaa diyaa
mujhe majnu banaa diyaa aa
tu ne teri nazar ne

main bhi zameen bhi arsh bhi
sab jhoomne lage
sab jhoomne lage
main bhi zameen bhi arsh bhi
sab jhoomne lage
sab jhoomne lage
masti bhari nazar se
kaho kyaa pilaa diyaa
kaho kyaa pilaa diyaa
tu ne teri nazar ne

dil par nazar hai dil mein
nazar hai huzoor ki
nazar hai huzoor ki
dil par nazar hai dil mein
nazar hai huzoor ki
nazar hai huzoor ki
yeh toot jaayegaa
jo nazar se giraa diyaa
jo nazar se giraa diyaa
tu ne teri nazar ne

This is one of my favorite songs composed by Snehal Bhatkar.
It is rare for a poet to use the word ‘kaafir’ in relation to a love song.

By the way, this film’s songs can be better enjoyed in the audio than the video clips.

Atul ji,
FARIYAD-1964 was a film which was full of wrong things. It had a wrong Hero,it had a wrong theme and it was made in a wrong period. Why two, here even three wrongs did not make a right and the film was a total flop, breaking 2 hearts.one that of the hero Ashok Sharma, son of a successful lyricist, story writer and a Director Kidar Sharma, and the second heart was that of the disappointed father who had made a second attempt to settle his son as a Hero. But providence had planned it otherwise and he failed even in the second attempt.Good music by Snehal Bhatkar,a protege of Kidar Sharma also could not save the film.
Earlier in Hamaari Yaad aayegi-61,launching Tanuja, same hero had the same fate.luckily, after this Kidar Sharma and his son reconciled with the fact and Ashok Sharma kept away from films for a long time.
The film was a prodn. of Show people,a concern floated by kidar Sharma.Under this banner films like Chhora Chhori-55,Hamari Yaad Aayegi-61,Fariyaad-64,Maikhana-67 and Pyase Nain-89 were made, but none was a successful film.
The theme of FARIYAAD was Achhut Kanya,i.e. the heroine is a Harijan-Untouchable.It attempted to depict the trials and turbulations faced by harijans. But in a period of 1964 and that too in a city like Bombay, this theme was outdated as even the society was least bothered about the Untouchable problem. No wonder this weak plot helped the film demolition.
Ashok(Ashok Sharma) is the son of a rich, high caste Brahmin Mahant. His mother(Achala Sachdev) reluctantly educates him and more reluctantly allows him to go to Bombay for college education.in the college Ashok is a matter of ridicule due to his language, hair style and puritanic behaviour. However he has one sympathiser-Manju(Zeb Rehman) who exhibits a soft corner for him.She is an orphan Harijan Girl brought up by a Christian-Peter.These two souls fall in love. There is a villain-Jolly(Dilip Dutt) who is interested in Manju.
One day, when the news of Peter’s death comes in the college,Jolly offers to escort manju to her house in his car.During the travel,Manju opposes his advances and jolly comes to know her Caste.next day,in the college Manju is avoided by everybody. She abandons the college.Ashok meets her and takes her to his village, introduces her to his mother and they get married without revealing her caste.Jolly enters the village and annonces the secret.Village elders throw away Manju and Ashok is also beaten black and blue.he is admitted in the Hospital.
Manju leaves town by train and attempts suicide by jumping off the train. She is injured but saved and brought to the same hospital where Ashok is kept. Now there are realisations of their love, expressed in long speeches by some elders and the mother.this changes the hearts of majority and Ashok and Manju are reunited to live happily ever after.
