Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Laanat hai aisi muhabbat pe pyaare

Posted on: May 19, 2012

This article is written by Raja, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I remember being one of the first few fans of this blog when Atul started it in mid-2008. Being crazy about old Hindi songs, I was very excited that Atul was starting this. His original intention was probably to publish songs of HIS liking here. But then he began getting – and accepting – requests (farmaishes).

Phir kya tha? “Andhe ko kya chaahiye – do aankhen?” situation happened with me – and I began bombarding him with farmaishes. Poor guy, he was too nice to tell me to shut up – so he would accept all my farmaishes and post them one by one (in those days he used to post only one song a day, hence the blog name “atulsongaday”).

I remember Lalitha joined around that time and began sending her farmaishes too. I think she used to justify her list, comparing it with my several lists (many of which were like a cricket or football team list. Both of us felt less guilty when the other sent Atul a list. 😉 Atul would patiently post all these songs – I don’t think he got much of a chance to post his own preferences. Maybe that’s one reason he decided to post more than one song a day. 😉
Anyway, those were the early days. Then one day, Atul asked me if I’d care to do a write-up. I was a bit apprehensive but said “no problem”. And that was how my first write-up appeared on the blog.

I soon began realizing that instead of acting like a customer demanding a service (that too, a service for free!) it would be so much better if I could contribute in some way towards the blog. After all, it takes a lot of Atul’s time to write up the lyrics and the intro – so if I could help by adding a few myself, it would help grow the blog. There were (and still are) thousands of songs out there waiting to be posted. Every song that can be posted, helps to reduce this deficit. (By then, Atul had started posting 4-5 songs on the blog everyday).

The other (side) advantage of doing a write-up is of course you get to post a song you want to. You can talk about it in your way – and hopefully it will make its way to the blog earlier than just sending a farmaish.

As the blog has grown, and there are many more contributors now, it feels like a wonderful journey that we are all making together. I enjoy reading contributions from everybody – each person has his or her own style that comes through strongly in the write-up. And of course, the comments are also extremely insightful and enriching – especially those of our encyclopaedia, Arunji.

So now, though I continue to find amazing songs on youtube (I always have), I feel I should bring them out to the larger audience myself instead of expecting somebody else to do so. In the process, my knowledge of the song may be limited but at least it gets to be out there – and somebody else can add to it. This is not a competition or an ego-trip, it is just sharing of knowledge and opinions.

Enough of all that. Sometimes even I get tired of reading what I write. 😉 So I can imagine how others must be feeling. 🙂 So let’s get to the song for today.

The song I have here today is one I fell in love with the first time I heard it. I say that for a lot of songs – but that’s because it is true. I do tend to fall in love a lot 😉 – thankfully, it is mainly with songs so I stay out of trouble. 🙂

I heard this song a few months ago – and wanted to write it up immediately. But somehow it never happened and it was constantly at the back of my mind. So today, I decided I just HAD to get it out of my mind and put it out here on the blog.

It is a real fun song – and I love fun songs. Some of my favourite Hindi songs are fun songs. Whether it is Kishore Kumar’s numerous antics, or IS Johar’s, whether it is Johnny Walker’s “sar jo tera chakraaye” or Mehmood’s “hum kale hain to kya hua” or “ jodi hamaari”, I love them all.

Now these are all actors who are known for songs in their movies – in fact, for many of them, songs were written with them in mind, so there used to be a mandatory “one comedy song” in the film for them.

But there is one comedian in the 1960s, who, inspite of being quite prolific, does not have quite this privilege. Yes, I am talking about Rajendranath.
To me, Rajendranath was one of three comedians of the 60s, who I saw in many movies, while growing up. The other two were Johnny Walker and Mehmood. (Jagdeep became more prolific in the 1970s).

Rajendranath does not quite seem to have got his due as a comedian. Maybe he was overshadowed by the towering presence and personality of Mehmood. But memories of Rajendranath always take me back to my childhood – even more than memories of Mehmood do, because Mehmood was very active even in the 70s. Rajendranath less so.

Rajendranath played the buffoon to perfection. If Johnny Walker charmed his audiences with his style, walk and dialogue delivery, and Mehmood had his audience in splits with his jokes and accents (whether it be Hyderabadi or Madraasi or Angrezi), Rajendranath was funny just as he was – playing the buffoon. Clumsy, saying the wrong things at the wrong time, always getting into trouble – but with the heart of gold, ever the hero’s sidekick.

To the best of my knowledge, songs on Rajendranath are not as common as songs on the others I’ve mentioned. I have seen a few – the first song that comes to my mind is the delightful “rooth ke jaane waali sun” from Johar in Bombay. And there is the fun “paape na sharma in Sagai (though he doesn’t really lip-sync in this but he’s a part of the song ). I’ll be happy for people to point out more songs picturised on him. I’d love to see them here on the blog.
Anyway, here’s one of them. It’s a total timepass song – “laanat hai aisi mohabbat pe pyaare” – the words are funny. It is sure to warm the cockles of your heart – especially when you see it is picturised on Rajendranath.

The movie is “Holiday in Bombay” (what a coincidence that he got to sing in two “…in Bombay” movies). I haven’t seen the film but songs of this movie have already been discussed here, so for a storyline, you can read this .
Rafi saab’s voice is delightful as usual. While the music is by N. Dutta, I am not sure who the lyricist is – maybe Atul can find out, or somebody can help with this piece of info.

Importantly, please enjoy this gem of a song. 🙂

Song-Laanat hai aisi muhabbat pe pyaare (Holiday in Bombay)(1963) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-P L Santoshi, MD-N Datta

Lyrics

aaaa

Chale thhey mohabbat mein maska lagaane
Ye socha thha Laila ka deedaar hoga
Ishaaron ishaaron mein iqraar hoga
Jo iqraar hoga,
to kismat banegi
Khabar kya thhi apni,
hajaamat banegi

Chhupa thha jo kal tak hamaare hi man mein
Wahi dard hai aaj saare badan mein

Raja,
So it was you who started the ‘invention’ of guest post in this blog 🙂

A guest poster is like a player in a celebrity cricket match where he can get ‘retired hurt’ any time. There is no such luxury for Atul. Even if he is ‘incapacitated to ‘play’, he has to find a way to satisfy the expectations of his audience.

In my younger days, I did not like Rajendranath’s comedy role which looked to me a bit childish. However, I was impressed by his role in ‘Teen Bahuraaniyan (1970). This proves that given a good script, he could perform a comedy role without any need to add buffoonery to it. See him in this video clip :

Raja ji,
Rajendranath(1931-2008) was also my fav comedian, the best among all others. To laugh at his actions, one did not need to decode the dialogue or even listen to him.His mere presence made you smile.
Recently,I saw your comment(may be on Memsaab),that many film personalities were one way or the other associated with MP,perticularly the Jabalpur track.Rajendranath’s family also had settled in Jabalpur !
Rajendranath succeded whenever he was in either Asha Parekh’s film or Shammi Kapoor’s film.
I think his best role was as POPATLAL in Jab pyar kisise hota hai and in
Poorab aur Paschim.
A trivia about Rajendranath-Senior Congress leader Arjun singh was his classmate in his college in Rewa-MP.He was very friendly with him and had to compulsorily stay in Arjun sigh’s house whenever he went to New Delhi.

I remember 1971 Ek Paheli(Tanuja,Feroz Khan) got one song picturised on Rajendranath and Tuntun:”kaahe karta hai tu itna shor…o darling I hate you, love you.” It has been covered by our blog.

There are at least 30 songs, lip-synced by him, from Usne Kaha Tha (1960) to Hukumat (1987), including a parody of Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya.

My favorite Rajendra Nath song is Hum To Lenge Sab Ki Balayein by Mahendra Kapoor in Dharmendra’s Saazish (1975).

I’m not sure if he worked with Prem Nath or Narendra Nath in a movie. Cant recall them sharing the screen together; which would be strange considering Prem Nath was still making movies as a lead actor during late 50s-early 60s, and was a super villain from Teesri Manzil (1966) to Karz (1980).

contd.

RK being the brother-in-law, they kinda made pairs by age groups, where u had RK and Prem Nath; Shashi Kapoor and Rajendra Nath; Randhir Kapoor and Narendra Nath; Rajiv Kapoor and Monty Nath; working together in several movies. Seems like they all just didnt work much with own brothers.

Yes, u r right about Prem Kishen. I think it has to do with the fact that he wanted to become a hero and not do supporting roles. So my guess is he did not work in too many movies, and then Television had started booming, so he got into running CineVista. His daughter Akanksha Malhotra was also quite beautiful, but could not succeed.

I love Rajendra Nath. No matter what the movie, he lights it up with his unique presence.
