Qadam qadam par bichche hain kaante

Posted on: May 28, 2012

Today (28th may), which happens to be the birthday of music director Vinod gives me a good reason to discuss a few songs composed by him. Vinod, whose real name was Eric Robert was born on 28th may 1922 at Lahore. He came to Bombay in late 1940s alongwith Roop K Shorey. Vinod composed music in about 32 Hindi movies and a few Punjabi movies. He was one of the pioneers of Hindi movie music during its formative years. He was one of those who used western music as well as Hinglish lyrics in his compositions at a time when such compositions were not quite in vogue.

Most of the movies of Vinod were low budget movies, including B grade movies and as a result, Vinod failed to get much recognition for his music because many of his songs failed to catch the ears of music lovers.

But Vinod’s name will remain immortal in the annals of Hindi movie music because of the music of “Ek Thi Ladki”(1949). The evergreen timeless classic song Laara lappa laara lappa laai rakhdaa is from this movie and this song is enough to immortalise Vinod. This movie had other great songs in it as well including the song Dilli se aaya bhai Tingu .

Vinod died only at the age of 37 and an extremely promising and exciting career was sadly cut short. It is estimated that he may have composed 300 plus songs during his career. Out of them, only about one third of these songs are available. This blog only has twenty songs of Vinod so far. We definitely need to post more songs of Vinod. Listening to the compositions of Vinod is a wonderful experience.

On the occasion of Vinod’s birthday, here is a forgotten gem from “Sabzbaagh” (1951). This song is sung by a young and fresh voiced Asha Bhonsle who was then struggling to get a foothold in the industry. One can notice that Asha Bhonsle had not quite found her identity as a singer, but the promise in her singing voice can be easily detected.

Aziz Kashmiri is the lyricist.

Only the audio of this song is available and so it is difficult to guess about the picturisation of this song. This movie, a Nirmal Pictures production, was directed by Aziz Kashmiri and it had Shekhar, Nimmi, Cuckoo, Pran, Khanjar, Chand Burque, Rashid Khan, Om Prakash, Suraiya Choudhary, Kamal Kapoor, Majnu etc in it. I can guess Nimmi as the actress who lip syns this son but I cannot vouich for it. I request our knowlewdgeable readers to throw more light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Qadam qadam par bichhe hain kaante(Sabzbaagh)(1951) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Aziz Kashmiri, MD-Vinod

Lyrics

qadam qadam par bichche hain kaante
qadam qadam par bichche hain kaante
idhar chalen ya udhar chalen
haay
idhar chalen ya udhar chalen
bata de mujhko mere muqaddar
bata de mujhko mere muqaddar
kahaan chalen aur kidhar chalen
idhar chalen ya udhar chalen

ujad gaya hai chaman hamaara
ujad gaya hai chaman hamaara
nahin jahaan mein koi sahaara
nahin jahaan mein koi sahaara
koi sahaara
kiya hai apnon ne bhi kinaara
kahaan chalen aur kidhar chalen
idhar chalen ya udhar chalen

wafa ke badle mein kyun zafa ki
wafa ke badle mein kyun zafa ki
saza mili hai ye kis khata ki
saza mili hai ye kis khata ki
ye kis khata ki
sitam hai qismat mein bhi saba ki
kahaan chalen aur kidhar chalen
idhar chalen ya udhar chalen
qadam qadam par bichche hain kaante
idhar chalen ya udhar chalen
