Pyaar karta jaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Pancham, the name by which that Rahul Dev Burman was affectionately called, was a name that was given by his father, Sachin Dev Burman. Once in an interview, RDB had revealed why Sachin Da called him by this name. He says that when he was born, and when Sachin Da heard him cry for the first time, he found that the pitch at which the newborn was screaming was the fifth octave of the sargam. And that is how he came to be known as Pancham. (There are other anecdotes also, crediting Ashok Kumar with naming him so.)

Remembering RDB on his birth anniversary today. A music director who in many ways revolutionized the film music in India. The decade of 70s was so singularly and completely ruled by him – there is no example of another music director who wielded so much influence and commanded such a large share of music compositions in the industry. In the period of 15 years from 1972 to 1986, he was nominated no less than 17 times for the Filmfare Award for Best Music Direction, albeit he won it only twice during this period. (His third Filmfare award came in 1995, a year after his passing away, for the film ‘1942 – A Love Story’.) Many consider his passing away as the end of an era in Hindi film music. An era that started in the 40s as film music took in more and more composers trained and grounded in classical music, who went on to improvise and produce wonderful music. RDB was the last of this lot of composers, with their feet on the foundation of classical music and their vision and their creations adapting and improvising to create hugely popular melodies.

The arrival of RDB on the Hindi film scene was heralded by the musical blockbuster ‘Teesri Manzil’ in 1966. Before this, RDB worked as an assistant to his renowned father, Sachin Dev Burman. Before ‘Teesri Manzil’ he did a couple of films as an independent music director. The first one was ‘Chhote Nawaab’ from 1961. Mehmood, the producer of this film, one day visited SD Burman with the intent to engage him for the music composition for his film. Sachin Da declined on account of being heavily booked. RDB was also sitting in the same room. Mehmood got up to go, but then paused and requested for RDB to do the music. That was the first break for him as an independent director. After this, he went back to being an assistant to his father for another four years. In 1965, once again, Mehmood approached him for composing music for his next venture, ‘Bhoot Bangla’. RDB also has a small cameo role in this film. ‘Chhote Nawaab’ may not have been memorable, but the music of ‘Bhoot Bangla’ caught the fancy of the listening public, and almost all songs went on to become wonderful hits. And then of course ‘Teesri Manzil’ happened the year after and the RDB juggernaut was launched.

This song from ‘Bhoot Bangla’ is a fun group song. It expresses some inspirational philosophies and also attempts to express the feelings of first love. The lyrics are written by Hasrat Jaipuri, and the singing voice is that of Manna Dey, supported by a chorus, and the proverbial echoing sounds in the hills of Khandaala. On screen, the song is performed by Mehmood and his friends, all members of a progressive youth club in the film. There are a number of faces in the group that I am not able to name. Of course, the rotund Polson is very recognizable. Tanuja is also present in this clip. She is not a member of the club, but is a friend who joins the group on their picnic outing.

Enjoy this lovely melody, one of the very first ones to come from the baton of RDB.

pyaar karta jaa
dil kehtaa hai
kaanton mein bhi gul khilaa

It is the heart’s aspiration
To love everyone
Let’s make the flowers blossom
Even in midst of thorns

hum naujawaan, masti bharey
dharti pe hum aasmaan hain
sab jhoomne waale

We are young folk
Full of verve and enthusiasm
We are the like the sky on this earth
(All of us) love to jive

kaun hai kyaa, kisey hai khabar
pehle to hum insaan hain
hum himmatwaale

Who may not know
What caste, what faith
Each one has
But we remember
That we are humans first
We have a brave and courageous heart

chhota badaa, koi bhi ho
apne liye sabhi ek hain
ye kyaa dharam hai

There is none that may be small or big (in the society)
We treat all with the same respect
Ah, what religion this is

sabse galey mil ke chalo
jag bewafaa, sabhi nek hain
ye kyaa sitam hai

Embrace every one
Take everyone along
The world is untrustworthy
But the people are all gentle, generous

dil ki agan badhti rahey
jalte rahen meethi aag mein
hum pyaar ke raahi

Let the spark in the heart become a glowing flame
Let us feel the warmth of this pleasant fire
We are all co-travelers on this path of love

gumcha e dil, khil hi gayaa
hai wo asar mere raag mein
dil dil se miley hain

The flower of the heart is blooming
Such is the effect of my song
Ah yes, the hearts are coming closer

Thank you Sudhir ji
for a nice write up on my favourite Pancham ji(and updating me about Rahul ji). And again Thanks for “Anuvaad”.
You know I like your anuvaad more than the lyrics itself.

If my memory serves me right, Rahul Dev Burman again appeared in a small cameo role(must be in a comic role, wearing hat ) in Nasir Hussain`s Pyar Ka Mausam(Shashi Kapoor, Asha Parekh starrer)

Regards
Prakash

Beautiful write-up Sudhir!
Pancham used Manna Dey’s voice a lot in his early days till about Sholay.
Between Teesri manzil and Chhote Nawab he also composed for Teesra Kaun, Pati Patni and Chandan ka Palna. I am sure you know that, but just supplementing some facts.
Thanks for this song.
