Main hoon ek hajjaam pyaare

Posted on: July 23, 2012

The month of July, which coincides with the Indian month of Saawan is an important month as far as Hindi movie songs are concerned. Western nations just have one day for lovers in the form of valentine days, but Hindi movies have the entire month of Saawan devoted for this purpose.

We in this blog are discovering that this month is also important from the point of view of anniversaries of Hindi movie personalities. Lots and lots of persons seem to have their birth and death anniversaries in this month. We have already dealt with over thirty such anniversaries in the month.

Today (23 july) is the death anniversary of Mehmood who passes away on this date on 2004 at the age of 71.

Apart from being a leading comedian of his era as well as a movie maker, I will remember him for helping build up the career of two very important Hindi movie personalities. One of them was Amitabh Bachchan, who got his first break as a hero in Mehmood’s comedy movie “Bombay To Goa” (1972).

As far as Hindi movie music is concerned, Mehmood is almost solely responsible for introducing R D Burman as a music director to Hindi movies. Mehmood, originally intending to sing up S D Burman, ended up signing R D Burman for “Chhote Nawaab” (1961). When this movie failed to launch R D Buram as a music dirctor, Mehmood signed up R D Burman again in “Bhoot Bangla” (1965), and the rest, as they say, is history.

Mehmood, like Johny Walker before him, had bbecome so important in the eyes of the movie makers and movie audiences that he often commanded his own sub plot in the movie which our beloved Memsaab has named as CSP (Comic Side Plot). With CSP, he also got to sing a few songs.

Here is a light hearted comedy song from “Do Kaliyaan” (1968) which is sung by Manna Dey and it is picturised on Mehmood. In the picturisation, Mehmood, playing an educated unemployed youth, thinks up the idea of opening a mobile saloon and sings this sales pitch song. This song was considered as a comedy song, but these days, management gurus would regard this as a innovative idea of salesmanship. In fact, I think that this idea should work even today.

Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Main hoon ek hajjaam (Do Kaliyaan)(1968) Singer-Manna Dey, Mehmood, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Ravi
