Chalta rahe ye kaarwaan

Posted on: August 3, 2012

Today (3 august) is the birth anniversary of Shakeel Badayuni. He was one of the most well known and influential lyricists in the golden era of Hindi movie music. He wrote about 700 songs in 89 movies. He teamed up with Naushad in 30 movies, with Ghulam Mohammad in 21 movies and with Ravi in 15 movies.

In addition, Shakeel Badayuni also worked in one or two movies with as many as 17 other music directors.
Shakeel Badayuni worked with Sardar Malik in just one movie. The movie was “Chor Bazar” (1954). It was an All India Pictures production. It was directed by P N Arora. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Sumitra Devi, Chitra, Kammo, W. M. Khan, Om Prakash etc in it.

The movie as well as its songs have been forgotten by now. I heard a song from this movie a few hours ago and I was highly impressed.

On the occasion of Shakeel Badayuni’s birth anniversary, here is this forgotten gem from “Chor Baazaar” (1954). The song is sung by Lata. It is picturised as a camel song where a lady is travelling on a camel with her kids while singing this song. I am unable to identify the lady and I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Chalta rahe ye kaarwaan (Chor Baazaar)(1954) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakee Badayuni, MD-Sardar Malik

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

chalta rahe ye kaarwaan
umr-e-ravaan ka kaarwaan
umr-e-ravaan ka kaarwaan
chalta rahe ye kaarwaan
umr-e-ravaa ka kaarwaan

shaam chaley sehar chaley
manzil se bekhabar chaley
shaam chaley sehar chaley
manzil se bekhabar chaley
bass yoon hi umr bhar chaley
ruk na sake yahaan wahaan
chalta rahe ye kaarwaan
umr-e-ravaan ka kaarwaan

phooley phaley meri kali
gham na miley tujhe kabhi
phooley phaley meri kali
gham na miley tujhe kabhi
guzre khushi mein zindagi
aaye na mausam-e-khizaan
chalta rahe ye kaarwaan
umr-e-ravaan ka kaarwaan

duniya ka tu habeeb ho
manzil teri qareeb ho
duniya ka tu habeeb ho
manzil teri qareeb ho
ooncha tera naseeb hai
tujhse khuda bhi ho amaan
chalta rahe ye kaarwaan
umr-e-ravaan ka kaarwaan
hmmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm
