Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O jaane waalon jaao na ghar apna chhod ke

Posted on: August 3, 2012

On the occasion of Shakeel Badayuni’s birth anniversary today (3 august), we are discussing a few songs written by him. Here is a song from one of the most memorable movies in which Shakeel Badayuni was involved. This movie is ‘Mother India” (1957). The movie as well as its songs went on to become timeless classics.

As many as five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the sixth song.

This song is a brief song, and a pivotal song in the context of the movie. The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Nargis and two kids playing her sons. The picturisation shows her pulling the “Hal” which is supported from the rear by her young kids. She falls in the mud, and her anxious kids go on to help support her. In the next frame, the young kids get transformed into grown up Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar, no longer anxious but laughing. It is one of the most poignant and memorable scenes in the annals of Hindi movies.

This song is penned by Shakeel Badayuni and composed by Naushad.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-O jaane waalon jaao na ghar apna chhod ke (Mother India)(1957) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

o jaane waalon
o jaane waalon jaao na ghar apna chhod ke
maata bulaa rahi hai tumhe haath jod ke
nagri tumhaari galiyaan tumhaari ye bastiyaan
in sab ko chhod kar are jaate ho tum kahaan
ujdi hai aankh phir bhi hai dharti tumhaari maa
duniyaa mein sukh na paaoge dil maa ka tod ke
o jaane waalon jaao na ghar apna chhod ke

theharo pukaarti hai tumhaari zameen tumhe
kehta hai aasmaan hai jeena yahin tumhe
laut aao
laut aao maa ki haay lage na kahin tumhe
ruk jaao jaa rahe ho kahaan peeth mod ke
o jaane waalon jaao na ghar apna chhod ke
maata bulaa rahi hai tumhe haath jod ke

I’ve seen ‘Mother India’ far too many times to remember. And every time, this particular song grips me by my heart! The sheer despair, the gut wrenching plea, the feeble promise of a better tomorrow are all there on Nargis’ face. Lata Mangeshkar gave her everything to make this song so memorable.
A similar situation was shown in ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganag Behthi Hai’ where Raj Kapoor and Padmini implore the villagers with ‘Aa ab laut chale…’ but it just lacked the sincerity of its plea. Perhaps Padmini looked synthetic compared to a Nargis dressed in rags. The difference between Mehboob Khan and Raj Kapoor couldn’t have been more stark!

Lata didi and others involved in making the song should have been decorated no sooner the film was released. But alas the mills of God grind slowly
