Vrishti pade tapor tupur
Posted on: September 21, 2012
Today (21 september) is the death anniversary of Tarachand Barjatya (10 may 1914 -21 september 1992) who was the founder of Rajshree Productions and he produced several well known and well loved movies. Rajshree Productions is still going strong even after his demise.
During Tarachand Barjatya’s tenure at the helm of Rajshree Production, this production house produced movies like “Dosti” (1964),”Jeevan Mrityu”(1970), “Uphaar”(1971), “Piya Ka Ghar”(1972), “Saudagar”(1973), “Geet Gaata Chal”(1975), “Tapasya”(1975), “Chitchor”(1976), “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye”(1977), “Paheli”(1977), “Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se”(1978), “Naiyya”(1979),”Sunayna”(1979), “Saawan Ko Aane Do” (1980), “Taraana”(1981), “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1982) etc. These movies typically catered to audiences of rural and semi rural areas as well as small towns, where these movies ran to packed houses.
After his demise, his grandson Suraj Barjatya began making movies for upmarket segment instead for rural and semi rural segment. Thus “Nadiya Ke Paar” (1982) was repackaged as “Hum Aapke Hai Kaun”(1994) with success.
Melodious music was one of the strongest suits of all Rajshree Productions movies. There are lots and lots of wonderful songs to chose from on this occasion.
Here is a song from “Paheli” (1977). This movie marked the debut of several artists, namely Namita Chandra (heroine), Arun Govil (small role), Poornima Jayaram, Neena Mahapatra and Anita Singh as actors and Suresh Wadkar as a playback singer.
One watching this movie without expectations would have enjoyed this movie but that was not the case with me. I had watched “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” (1977) just a few weeks back and loved that Rajshree Productions movie. So I was expecting “Paheli” (1977) to be a better movie than that. I found “Paheli” (1977) a huge let down vis a vis “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” (1977). So I was one of those movie goers who did not like this movie. The songs of this movie were hummable and became popular too, but I was in no mood to have anything to do with the music of this movie either.
Now, more than three decades later, I am grudgingly coming round to the view that I should treat the music of this movie on its own merit instead of allowing my experience with this movie to come in the way.
When I look at the starcast of the movie now, I realise that the lead actors (Satyajeet and Namita Chandra) have been quickly forgotten, but the support cast reads like the the whose who of Hindi movie character artists. This movie had Nitin Sethi, Durga Khote, Leela Mishra, A K Hangal, Dina Pathak, Birbal, Abha Dhulia, Shivraj etc etc in this movie.
Here is this nice song from “Paheli”(1977). The mukhda of the song “Vrishti pade tapor tupur” is a common Bangla phrase to describes rain (of low to medium intensity). The song is sung by Hemlata and Suresh Wadkar and it is picturised as a rain song on Namita Chandra and Satyajeet. Ravindra Jain is the lyricist as well as the music director.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Eventhouh child artiste who started in this movie as a hero unable to become popular.
Afterwards he made news for his ill famous(according to gossip magazines) friendship with rekha on the sets of Khoon Bhari maang(he acted in that movie)and in Arjun(as sunny deol`s friend). I liked him very much in Arjun. He is an talented actor in my opinion.

I recollect having seen Nameeta in a B-grade movie starring Vijendra – I think it was waqt waqt ki baat. But then no idea where Nameeta disappeared afterwards… well, talent and bollywood do not go together… i mean not every talented actor/ actress gets a great opportunity in Bollywood

In addition to what is mentioned by Atul, what is notable is that most of the movies made under the Rajshri banner were super hits. Dulhan Wohi… introduced Rameshwari and Bina Rai’s son Prem Kishen and also Shyamlee Mehmood to the silver screen. This is an ever green movie. Haven’t watched Paheli so far. But I recollect that this song was very famous in the late 70’s.

The actress Poornima Jayaram who acted in this movie made big name in Tamil industry later on and married Tamil very talented & Hotshot(then)director & Screnplay writer-K.Bhagyaraja(who directed Amithabh`s Aakhiri Raasta)
If I am not wrong Poornima jayaram also acted in Hindi movies like Dillagi(as one of the students of Hemamalini and dharmendra-Basu chatterjee)and Dard(Rajesh khanna, Hema malini-Ambarish Sanghal`s movie-Today one of the song from that movie has been posted in the blog)
