“Padosi” (1941) was a Prabhat Films production. It was produced and directed by V Shantaram. The movie had Balwant singh, Anees Khatoon, Mazhar Khan, Gajanan Jagirdar, D D Kashyap etc in it.
This movie, which was made in Marathi as well was regarded as an important movies of those days. With time this movie has been forgotten, but it remains a movie of historical importance.
Here are the details about this song as well as the movie by Mr Sadanand Kamath.
The film ‘Padosi’ (1941) was made both in Hindi and Marathi keeping with the trend of most Prabhat films. The theme of the film was communal harmony. The theme idea may have stemmed from the then prevailing political situation in the country arising from the demand of the Muslim League of a separate homeland for Muslims. This was supposed to be a part of ‘divide and rule’ policy of then British rulers. I had seen the Marathi version of this film which was titled as ‘Shejari’, during the early years of the Bomaby (Mumbai) Doordarshan. I do not remember much of the film except the famous Marathi torch song ‘lakh lakh chanderi tejaachi saari duniyaa’ and the scenes of dam burst towards the end of the scene. Subsequently, I had seen this song on Marathi Chhaaya Geet programme of Doordarshan a few times. I have listened to this song umpteen times on YT but never got tired of listening the same. Surely, there is some magic in this song.
PADOSI (1941) was directed by V Shantaram, his last film for Prabhat Films before setting up his own production company Rajkamam Kala Mandir in 1942. The star cast included Gajanan Jagirdar, Mazhar Khan, Balwant Singh, Anees Khatoon, D D Kashyap, Radhakrishan, Vasant Thengdi, Balakram, Sumitra Devi etc. Songs were penned by Pandit Sudarshan and was set to music by Master Krishnarao.
The story revolves around a village where Mirza (Gajanan Jagirdar) and Thakur (Mazhar Khan) are neighbours and close friends. The friendship and communal harmony are put to test when a city builder comes to the village to acquire land for the purpose of building a dam. In the beginning, the villagers stand united in opposing the land acquisition. But their resolution is broken by the builder’s ‘divide and rule’ policy. He becomes successful in creating a rift in the village on communal line resulting in two close friends becoming foes. The builder is successful in acquiring land and builds the dam. One day, the dam gets burst and in trying to save Thakur from the force of the dam water, Mirza is also caught in the force of the water and both dies holding each other’s hand.
The highlights of this song are :
• The song is of over 7 minutes’ of duration and picturised as a part of community celebration.
• The song has somewhat longer interludes of orchestration between two stanzas than what we normally get to hear. Also it has music interludes even. between two lines. So the choreography has been given primacy over the song rendition.
• Despite primitive technology, the song picturisation is superb and pleasing to the eyes. In a torch light song, managing the dancers with torch lights in their hands requires delicate performance. Kali Bose, the choreographer has done a splendid ground work to get the magical feel of the dance. It is said that the scene was picturised on a ground near Prabhat Studio which is now a part of Law College ground and a camera was placed on a nearby hillock to capture the overall scene.
• The picturisation of the song also includes a sub-plot of romantic pair’s sojourn ( Balwant Singh and Anees Khatoon) in privacy very near to the community celebration and they sing in tandem with the orchestration of the main song.

Some time back,I had written a series on forgotten artists for a book to be published in Sinhalese Language by one of my Ceylonese friends.
There was a small write up on BALWANT SINGH,in it. here it is-
BALWANT SINGH was born in Pandoga village,Dist.Una in Himachal Pradesh.
After a training from Pt.Bhishmadev,he came to Bombay and joined Bombay Talkies at the age of 18 years.He first gave Playback in Jeevan Prabhat-37.In Nirmala-38 he acted and also sang a song.Then came Durga-39 where also he acted and sang.
V.Shantaram cast him in Padosi-41 and his songs in this film were hits.
He was Hero in Darpan,Swapna,Malan,Naukar,Paraya Dhan,Ashirwaad,Collegian,Dr.Kumar,Bhanwar,Hip hip hurray and Apni chhaya-50 etc.As a hero he sang less songs.his songs with Shanta hublikar(Malan) and Parul Ghosh and Khan Mastana(Bhanwar) were very popular.He also acted in Nirmala,Vachan and Kangan.
He married a girl from the royal family of Palanpur,Gujrat.
After leaving films,he worked in All India Radio fro 4 years.The signature tune played just before the morning broadcast was composed by Balwant Singh.
Then he settled in Ahmedabad,directing Dramas and Teaching music.Finally,he settled in Ludhiyana where,after a long illness,he died on 4-12-1985.

About ANEES KHATOON very little info is available.
Anees Khatoon entered film Industry thru Sagar movietone,in 1933 doing small roles(she was just 16 yrs then),in Chandrahas Mahabharat,Premi pagal,jaan Nissar,Sati anjani etc.Then she joined Ajanta cinetone,later Kumar movietone and then Ranjit.She did the role of Girija in V.Shantaram’s PADOSI-41,chingari and her last film was Nayi Zindagi-1943.She sang several songs in premi pagal,Pyar ki Maar,Prithviputra,Nazar ka shikar,Sherdil aurat,registan ki Rani,ZTufani toli etc.

In fact, I had completed an article on this song today morning and was to send for discussion for tomorrow. I reproduce below a gist of the article:
