Phir wohi raat hai khwaab ki

on:“Ghar” (1978) was produced by N N Sippy and directed by Manik Chatterji. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Rekha, Prema Narayan, Asit Sen, Dinesh Thakur etc in it.
This movie was the breakthrough movie for Rekha. From an ugly ducking who was not serious about her career, Rekha transformed into a mature actress who began to care about her looks as well as about her career.
It is difficult to imagine that Vinod Mehra, the able foil of Rekha in this 34 year old movie left for his heavenly abode 22 years ago. Today (30 october) is the 22nd death anniversary of Vinod Mehra.
On this occasion, here is a nice and lovely song from “Ghar” (1978). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it is picturised on Vinod Mehra and Rekha. Gulzar is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Phir wohi raat hai khwaab ki (Ghar)(1978) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
phir wohi
raat hai
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hum hmm hmm hmm
phir wohi raat hai
phir wohi raat hai khwaab ki
ho o
raat bhar khwaab mein
dekha karenge tumhe
phir wohi raat hai
phir wohi raat hai
phir wohi raat hai khwaab ki
ho o
raat bhar khwaab mein
dekha karenge tumhe
phir wohi raat hai
masoom si neend mein
jab koi sapna chale
ho o
hum ko bula lena tum
palkon ke parde tale
ho o
ye raat hai khwaab ki
ee ee ee
khwaab ki raat hai
phir wohi raat hai
phir wohi raat hai
phir wohi raat hai khwaab ki
kaanch ke khwaab hain
aankhon mein chubh jaayenge
ho o
palkon mein lena inhen
aankhon mein ruk jaayenge
ho o
ye raat hai khwaab ki
ee ee ee
khwaab ki raat hai
phir wohi raat hai
phir wohi raat hai
phir wohi raat hai khwaab ki
ho o
raat bhar khwaab mein
dekha karenge tumhe
phir wohi raat hai
raat hai
raat hai

Atul ji,
GHAR-1978 was based on the story by Dinesh Thakur. He won that year’s Filmfare award for Best story too.Rekha was also nominated for Best Actress, but did not get it.
Actually the story of GHAR-78 was inspired by a news item which had been published in INDIAN EXPRESS in early 1978.This was about an actual incident where, while returning from the late night film show in the
‘Drive – in Theatre” at Bandra(E) in Bombay,a couple was waylaid, the wife abducted, gangraped in a nearby slum and the husband was beaten
unconcious.
The news created havoc not only in Bombay, but also all over India.Even the then Prime Misnister Indira Gandhi expressed horror and an inquiry at the highest level was ordered. The concerned reporter was grilled to get the identification of the couple, but he took the advantage of legal protection to protect the source of info and the names were kept unknown.
The reporter was a noted one serving Ind.Exp from 68-80,The Daily,Free Press Journal and Press news Agencies etc.He has written many books on cricket and old films/old music and does Talk shows too.
Unfortunately,it was revealed by him after few years that the sensational news item was only Imaginary and no such thing had happened, for which he had to tender Apology too to the paper concerned.but the matter was kept hush hush.

Arunji,
I had some idea about the story behind making this film, but never knew it was phony. Thanks for the “light”

It is shocking, but more than that, it is amazing, that the “un-named” reporter got away with this fabrication and duplicity. OK so the news was fake, but what about the public outcry, what about police action, what about an enquiry demanded by Indira Gandhi (well, come to think of it, Indira Gandhi was sitting in opposition benches in 1978). When the truth was revealed, it should not have been hushed up, but the reporter should have been subjected to public humiliation through the media.
Ah well, India – one can get away with anything.

Ye sirf India mein hi nahi hota, Bade desh ke bade logon ki baaten bhi chhoti hoti hai. I would not name anybody here, but with the US election going on, so many truths are revealed about the “politician” 🙂

Sudhir ji,
They say, public memory is very short. The period of 78-81 was turbulent in India and there were many other more interesting news items for the people to chew.may be that is why all this got buried silently.
This entire episode is given in details in one of his books itself.
