Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Nazaaron mein ho tum khayaalon mein ho tum

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

A few days back, one of the readers of this blog commented on the song arree hato kaahe ko jhoothhi banaao batiyaan sung by Manna Dey that he is not a versatile singer. Well, the reader has given his view which we respect in line with ‘pasand apni apni khayal apna apna’. Of course, with such a sweeping statement, there were responses by some of the regulars of this blog. A few examples of songs in support of Manna Dey’s singing versatility were also listed. There is no doubt that Manna Dey is a complete singer. His repository of singing encompasses classical, patriotic, romantic, light comedy, ghazal and more. His versatility goes beyond the different genres of songs. Take for instance the variations in his renditions within the genre of romantic songs of expressing love – tera haath haath mein aa gayaa, roop tumhaaraa aankhon se pi loon, tum jo aao to pyaar aa jaaye and some non-filmy songs like ‘ye awaara raatein ye koyi si baatein’ and ‘ nazaaron mein ho tum khayaalon mein ho tum’.

I remembered Manna Dey’s last mentioned non-filmy song while I was going through the comments. I have no idea as to when he recorded this song but I had heard this song in the 60s. I must have listened to this song after a gap of 30-35 years. Naturally, this brought back to me the nostalgic memories of listening the songs on the radio. Incidentally, this song was the signature tune of the then Radio Ceylon’s Hindi song programme ‘Pasand Apni Apni Khayal Apna Apna’. I was hypnotised by this song so much that those days it always lingered in my mind. When I started collecting 78 RPM gramophone records of Hindi film songs of the golden era in early 70s, this was one of my first acquisitions (Record No. N.88091).

The song was penned by Chandrashekhar Pande and set to music by V Balsara. The lyrics are simple but they are filled with intense love. This song gives me a great feeling. What an apt way to express love to one’s beloved through this song. This song is one more example of the versatility of Manna Dey as a singer. The tune is a blend of semi-classical and western music. He sings this light romantic song with chorus humming in the background giving a feel of the carol singing during the eve of Christmas.

This song is one of the immortal love songs for sure.

jahaan mein tum hi tum
nazaaron mein ho tum
khayaalon mein ho tum

o mere sapno ki raani
us din ka hai intzaar
tum meri baahon mein hogi

Sadanandji,
Thanks for the NFS of Manna Dey, which I enjoyed a lot. I am not familiar with too many of his NFSs. The first NFS of his that I heard was “Nathli se toota moti re….” which is composed by him and written by Madhukar Rajasthani. I enjoy each of his song of any genres.

I fully agree with Atul Sahib. Manna Da certainly belongs to the most versatile singers that India ever had albeit he did not receive the credit he actually deserved, as is the case with so many other artists.
Among his songs, “Roop Tumhare Aankh Se Piloon” and indeed “Nazaaron mien ho tum, khayaalon mien ho tum” deeply touch my heart. I also cannot listen enough to e.g. his soulful “Kaun Aya Mere Man Ke Dwaar”. Listening to today’s playback singers gives me the creeps, except for a handful favorable exceptions such as Sonu Nigham and Shreya Goshal.

I came to now that the tune of this NFS is based on Jim Reeves’ popular song of the early 1950s, ‘Irene goodnight. Here is the YT clip:

Lyrics:

Irene, goodnight,
Irene, goodnight,
goodnight, Irene,
goodnight, Irene,
I’ll see you in my dreams.

last Saturday night I got married,
me and my wife settled down,
now me and my wife have parted,
I’m gonna take another stroll in town
Irene, goodnight,
Irene, goodnight,
goodnight, Irene,
goodnight, Irene,
I’ll see you in my dreams..

sometimes I live in the country,
sometimes I live in town,
sometimes I have a great notion,
to jump in the river and drown.
Irene, goodnight,
Irene, goodnight,
goodnight, Irene,
goodnight, Irene,
I’ll see you in…. my dreams.
