Many have sung Meera bhajans – from classical greats like M.S. Subbulakshmi to Bollywood greats such as Lata Mangeshkar … and so many in between – and to their credit. But for me, Juthika Roy’s vocals and expression seem to be made for Meera bhajans. Her Meera numbers touch even my atheist heart! Juthika Roy’s private numbers are galore, but she seems to have sang for only three movies: Lalkar (1944) under the baton of C Ramchandra, Ratnadeep (1952) under Robin Chatterjee (Hindi and Bangla versions) and the Bangla movie Dhooli (1954) under Ranjan Sarkar.

“Hamsaaya”(1968) was produced and directed by Joy Mukherji. This movie had Joy Mukherjee, Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, Rehman, Gajanan Jagirdar, D. K. Sapru, Malika, Madan Puri, Jankidas, Jagdish Kamal, Polson etc in it.

“Inspector”(1956) was a Pushpa Pictures presentation. It was directed by Shakti Samanta. the movie had Ashok Kumar, Geeta Bali, Pratima Devi, Maruti, N. Hussain, Achla Sachdev, K. N. Singh, Mehmood, Pran etc.

“Gawaiyya” (1954) was a R B Production movie. It was directed by H P Sharma. The movie had Surendra, Sulochana Chatterji, Vijayalaxmi, Sundar, Sapru, Heera Sawant, Kumkum etc in it.

My all-time favourite Lata-Kishore duet is from the Famina Production’s Fareb (1953) ” Aa, mohabbat ki basti basaayenge hum”, in which the duo are at their soulful best in expressing the pangs of separation of the two lovers, so poignantly captured in Majrooh Sultanpuri’s breath-taking imagery “dekh dharti se aakaash hai kitni door!”

“Daaku Ki Ladki” (1954) is an extremely obscure movie by now. This movie was a Harish production movie. It was produced and directed by Harish. The movie had Geeta Bali, Sheikh Mukhtar, Arjun, Mukri, Deepa, Shivraj, Cuckoo, Sankatha Prasad etc in it.

Without detracting one bit from her merit, capability and musico-longevity, I have to admit that I am not a fan of Asha Bhosle in the same manner as I am of Lataji. That said, there are quite a few of Ashaji’s evergreens – some of them lesser known than her racy raunchy numbers – which touch me more or less the same as some of Lataji’s best.

I heard this song often when the promos of Rockstar played on TV, I liked the tune but did not really listen closely. One time a friend asked me who Indira Billi was, and to educate him, I looked for some videos of her on You Tube. I came across a fetching song ‘Katiya Karoon’ sung by Shamshad Begum and performed by Indira Billi. I posted that song for my friend and remembered this composition of AR Rahman’s. In comparing the two songs I realized that the earlier Shamshad Begum one was sung like a folk song while this later song was sung like a sufi song. Some more research yielded that this song was based on a kafi by Bulleh Shah, the supreme sufi writer who lived in the later part of the 17th and early part of the 18th century in Punjab.

Chaar din ki hain bahaaren

There were two Hindi movies with the title “Yahudi Ki Ladki”. The first one was produced in 1933 and the other one was produced in 1957. As many as four songs from the 1933 movie has been discussed and none from the other movie of the same title.
