Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ho door desh se aa jaa re

Posted on: April 8, 2013

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog. This is his 200th writeup in the blog.

SHOKHIYAN (1951) was produced and directed by Kidar Sharma under the banner of Ambitious Pictures. The star cast included Premnath, Suraiya, Jeewan, Kamlesh Kumari, Nazira, Shanta Kanwar, Achala Sachdev, Ramesh Sinha etc. There were 8 songs in the film of which 6 were penned by Kidar Sharma and remaining two songs by his brother Himmat Rai Sharma. Kidar Sharma was impressed with Jamal Sen’s classical and Rajasthani folk tunes he demonstrated to him and thus got the music direction of the film.

The film story was based on the Portuguese invasion in some part of South India. Kidar Sharma decided to take Suraiya as the heroine for the film in the role of a tribal girl. It is said that since she was of a fair complexion, Kidar Sharma used even some mud for make up on her to look like a tribal girl. The film was one of the costliest ones of that time costing about Rs.15 lakhs. The film failed miserably at the box office and despite having good songs, Jamal Sen’s career as a music director received a setback.

The film had beautiful songs mostly based on classical raagas and folk tunes of Rajasthan. Three songs from this film have already been discussed in the blog including the iconic song sapna ban saajan aaye. I have chosen ‘door desh se aa jaa re’ as the 4th song from the film for discussion which is sung by Suraiya, Lata Mangeshkar and Chorus. In fact, it is more of a chorus song than Suraiya-Lata song. The song was written by Kidar Sharma. The composition of the song is based on some Rajasthani folk music with a lot of percussion based musical interludes. The song is rhythmic. The antaraas start with slow paced rendition by Suriaya/Lata Mangeshkar but become fast paced as the chorus singers take over. It is a tribal dance probably in the background of some joyous events. The song has been beautifully picturised on a set giving a tribal atmosphere. Jamal Sen was known for his expertise in percussion and mastery of classical and Rajasthani folk music. He has used his expertise in this song as well all other songs in the film. Note the fast paced dholak beats.

By the way, this song is one of the five songs Suraiya and Lata Mangeshkar sang together. Kidar Sharma, in his autobiography ‘The one and lonely Kidar Sharma’ mentions that when Lata Mangeshkar came to know that Jamal Sen was the music director for ‘Shokhiyan’ (1951), she told him that she would like to sing even one line in a song knowing fully well that Suraiya was the heroine of the film and therefore she would sing for herself. Thus she sang a couple of lines in the song under discussion giving playback for Kamlesh Kumari and another unidentified actress. Of course, Lata Mangeshkar did sing a solo referred to above and one duet with Promodini Desai in the film.

I feel, it is the other way round for me. I was motivated by your numerous informative comments and anecdotes on the blog. I thought why not make such types of information as part of the articles. Thus I made a beginning.

I wonder why was I reminded of ‘bichhua’ by Salilda. Salilda was a great musician who could draw inspiration from whatever source, including this song while composing ‘bichhua.’
