Soyi kaliyaan hans padin…sapna ban saajan aaye

Posted on: October 19, 2011

“Shokhiyaan” (1951) is a by now obscure movie. this movie was produced by Ambitious pictures and directed by Kidar Sharma. Cast of the movie included names like Nazira, Shanta Kanwar, Premnath, Suraiya, Jeewan, Kamlesh, Achla Sachdev, Rajendra Vyas, Ramesh Sinha etc.

I had discussed one song from this movie in the past, more than two years ago. Now I have been sent the lyrics of another song from this movie by Mr Sadanand Kamath. This is a rare song which I had never heard before.

This lovely semi classical song is a delight to listen to. It is sung by Lata. Kidar Sharma is the lyricist and music is composed by Jamal Sen.

The picturisatio shows a lady playing a royal person and surrounded by kowtowing minions lip syncing this song. Her minions included Premnath as well as Suraiyya. Suraiyya is entrusted with the job of fanning the lady and Suraiyya is visibly feeling unhappy on being asked to perform this menial job. 🙂

I may have heard this song for the first time only just now, but Mr Sadanand Kamath heard this song for the first time in 1970s in one of his friend’s house and he noticed the fact that the lyrics were in chaste Hindi and the music has a semi classical base. Later , when he watched the picturisation, he too, like most of us, is amused at the sight of seeing the lead players of the movie having to perform lowly jobs in this picturisation.

The comments in YT, which need to be taken with dollops of salt, suggest that the artist lip syncing the song is either Nazira or Surya Kumari. I do not have faith in the coments that are often made on YT. One of the comments in YT on this song would want us to believe that Lata too is visible in the picturisation playing cymbals. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

Nazira is there in the cast, so it could well be Nazira, but I request our knowledgeable readers to identify the artist once and for all.

Here is this wonderful forgotten gem from “Shokhiyaan” (1951). Listening to this song is a wonderful experience.

Song-Sapna ban saajan aaye (Shokhiyaan) (1951) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma,MD-Jamal Sen

Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)

Soyi kaliyaan,
aaa aaa aaa,
hans padin
jhuke laaj se nain

veenaa ki jhankaar mein,
tadapan laage bain

sapnaa ban saajan aaye
sapnaa ban saajan aaye
ham dekh dekh muskaaye
ham dekh dekh muskaaye
ye nainaa,
bhar aaye,
sharmaaye
sapnaa ban saajan aaye
sapnaa ban saajan

bichh gaye baadal
ban kar chaadar
bichh gaye baadal
ban kar chaadar
indradhanush pe hamne jaakar
jhoole khoob jhulaaye
jhoole khoob jhulaaye
ye nainaa,
bhar aaye,
sharmaaye
sapnaa ban saajan aaye
sapnaa ban saajan

neel gagan ke sundar taare
neel gagan ke sundar taare
chun liye phool samajh ati nyaare
chun liye phool samajh ati nyaare
jholi mein bhar laaye
jholi mein bhar laaye
ye nainaa,
bhar aaye,
sharmaaye
sapnaa ban saajan aaye
sapnaa ban saajan

mast pawan thhi
ham thhe akele
mast pawan thhi
ham thhe akele
hil mil kar barkhaa sang khele
hil mil kar barkhaa sang khele
phoole nahin samaaye,
ham phoole nahin samaaye
ye nainaa,
bhar aaye,
sharmaaye
sapnaa ban saajan aaye
sapnaa ban saajan aaye

Atul ji,
SHOKHIAAN(1951) was a Ambitious Pictures presentation and was a “sab kuch Kidar sharma” movie.
Kidar Sharma produced and directed the film. He also wrote the screen play and Dialogues, the Story was by his cousin Pramod Sharma.Kidar sharma wrote some lyrics along with his younger brother Himmat Rai for this movie.
Kidar Sharma also gave an opportunity to Music Director Jamal Sen in this film First time(Debut movie) and Jamal sen made gold out of it.The above Lata song’Sapna ban saajan aaye’ was done in Raag Yaman Kalyan and the rest of the songs of this movie were done in Rajasthani Folk and classical style.
Jamal sen was talented but, like Sajjad Hussain, was very short tempered, proud and self respected person. He never asked anybody for work nor did he use any recommendations. The result was as expected and he did very few,but memorable movies. His son Shambhu sen,and his son Sameer sen and Grandsons Lalit and sohail sen all became Music directors.
Sameer sen and his uncle Dileep sen gave music to 80 odd films

Arun,

Is it the same Lalit Sen whose name I used to see as music composure for some TV serials year’s back? If it so, I think he also composed music for one of the most popular non-filmy videos in which Aayesha Takia featured. I am not able to remember the song.

Kamath ji,
Yes,he is the same.He specialises in TV work only.Smetimes he is mistaken for Lalit of Lalit-Jatin(Pandit brothers),but he is different.

Arun,

Thanks for information.
You are correct. I also first thought of Lalit Pandit before guessing it to be Lalit Sen 🙂

Thank you very much for giving the correct information about this song.
I like this song very much or rather say this the best song of lata mang-
eshkar. The actoress who sung the song on screen played a wonderful
role.

Atul ji,
The above song is filmed on KAMLESH KUMARI(junior),not to be mistaken for Kamlesh Kumari Senior, who was a Bengali actress, who also worked in some Hindi movies.
This Kamlesh Kumari was introduced by Kidar Sharma in her maiden film, but the film flopped and Kamlesh kumari had problems in getting more films.
