Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Wo kaaghaz ki kashti wo baarish ka paani

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I first heard this private song of Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh, in the film ‘Hero’ (1983). In a scene in the film Meenakshi Sheshadri is seen moping around and listening to this song on a cassette player. Just a few lines are heard before the scene continues on, but later on we got to hear the whole song in a cassette of this duo’s ghazals. I do not remember the name of the collection. It may have been ‘classic collection’ .

The other day a non-film song on similar lines was posted in the blog. That got me thinking about this song, which is commonly known as ‘woh kaaghaz ki kashti woh baarish ka paani ‘. Looking for the name of the Album has revealed that the same song was used as a solo song by Jagjit Singh in the film ‘Aaj’ (1987). The song is picturized on Kumar Gaurav, who is singing as Smita Patil is lying seriously ill in a hospital. The song thus picturized is very depressing.

Before this was a song nostalgia about childhood. It meant fond memories literallly from making those paper boats and seeing them floating in the puddles of collected rain water. In our village, and in the society compound too in Mumbai, I have made a no. of such boats and ships too, with paper. Now a days kids learn to make paper boats is elementary craft lessons, and hardly ever put it to practice in real life. I have yet to test if my son still knows how to make a boat of paper. They are involved in other sophisticated gadgets, and have missed out on these simple pleasure as building things out of sand and paper.

Na duniyaa ka gham thha
Na rishton ke bandhan
Badi khooburat thhi wo zindagaani

I also remember that amongst all the kids who would be together for parts of summer vacations, I was the one who would wonder about what the future will bring, where we all will end up some years from than. Nobody would take this futuristic thinking seriously, as normal fun loving children, with no care in the world.

Decades have gone by, and all of us who are in touch and those who are not in touch, are settled in life, most of us are planning and worried sick about our kids’ futures. While the kids are the same as we used be at their age. They are not at all worried. In a way it is good that at least in some ways they are free of worries and free to enjoy their childhood. It is one cherished time out of time, once gone, never comes back.

Hum bhi kya saada thhe hum ne bhi samajh rakkha thha
gham-e-dauran se judaa hai gham-e-janaan janaan

Har koi apni hi awaaz se kaanp utthata hai
har koi apne hi saaye se hiraasan janaan

Jis ko dekho wahi zanjir-ba-pa lagtaa hai
shahar ka shahar hua dakhil-e-zindaan janaan

Ab teraa zikr bhi shaayad hi ghazal main aye
aur se aur huaa dard ka unwaan janaan

( part of a ghazal I found on the net)

Lyrics

Yeh daulat bhi le lo
yeh shohrat bhi le lo
bhale chheen lo
mujh se meri jawaani
magar mujh ko lautaa do
bachpan ka saawan
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani

yeh daulat bhi le lo
yeh shohrat bhi le lo
bhale chheen lo
mujh se meri jawaani
magar mujh ko lautaa do
bachpan ka saawan
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani

wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani

mohalle ki sab se nishaani puraani
wo budhiyaa jise bachche kehte thhey naani
wo naani ki baaton mein pariyon ka deraa
wo chehre ki jhurriyon mein sadiyon ka pheraa
bhulaaye nahin bhool saktaa hai koyi
wo chhoti si raaten wo lambi kahaani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani

kadi dhoop mein
apne ghar se nikalnaa
wo chidiyaa wo bulbul
wo titli pakadnaa
wo gudiya ki shaadi pe
ladna jhagadna
wo jhoolon se girna
wo gir ke sambhalna
wo peepal ke chhainyyon ke pyaare se tohfe
wo tooti huyi chudiyon ki nishaani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani

kabhi reit ke oonche teelon pe jaana
gharonde banaana banaa ke mitaana
wo maasoom chaahat ki tasveer apni
wo khwaabon khilonon ki jaageer apni
na duniyaa ka gham thha
na rishton ke bandhan
badi khoobsoorat thhi wo zindagaani
yeh daulat bhi le lo
yeh shohrat bhi le lo
bhale chheen lo
mujh se meri jawaani
magar mujh ko lautaa do
bachpan ka saawan
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani
wo kaaghaz ki kashti
wo baarish ka paani

How my mother loved this song! She would ask me to play it for her every day. She passed away 15 yrs ago. Ab uski bahut yaad aati hain.

Nahm ji,

What a wonderful reminder, what a lovely piece of poetry.

In 1982, Jagjit and Chitra released an album by the name, ‘The Latest’. This album has eight ghazals. I remember, this is the first Jagjit Singh cassette that I had purchased. And still a very prized possession in my collection.

This ghazal is the lead ghazal in this album. This ghazal had become very popular at one time, almost a signature song for childhood memories, for the young and old alike.

The other ghazals in this album are no less enchanting. Each one is a masterpiece of sheer poetry and soulful rendition.

Shaayad Mein Zindagi Ki Sehar Le Ke Aa Gayaa
Qaatil Ko Aaj Apne Hi Ghar Le Ke Aa Gayaa

Zindagi Tujhko Jiya Hai Koi Afsos Nahin
Zeher Khud Maine Piya Hai Koi Afsos Nahin

Us Mod Se Shuru Karen Phir Se Ye Zindagi
Har Shai Jahaan Haseen Thi Hum Tum Thhe Ajnabi

Jis Mod Par Kiye Thhe Hum Intezaar Barson
Us Se Lipat Ke Roye Hum Deewaan-waar Barson

Shabaab Ki Naqaab Gum, Badi Haseen Raat Thi
Chiraagh o Aftaab Gum, Badi Haseen Raat Thi

Teri Aankhon Mein Hamne Kya Dekha
Kabhi Qaatil Kabhi Khudaa Dekha

Dhal Gayaa Aftaab Ae Saaqi
La Pilaa De Sharaab Ae Saaqi

Simply wonderful album

Thanks again for the memories. 🙂

I was talking about the same album. I can recall the first three mentioned by you, I like ‘uss mod se shuru karen phir yeh zindagi’ a lot. This one is also a duet. Chitra Singh’s voice was a perfect foil for Jagjit Singh’s.

They became known as ghazal singers later on, but this one is not a ghazal but a geet, a lovely piece of poetry as you said.

Regards.
