Naina soyi soyi raina jaage jaage

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
One day, I was searching for something in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh (HFGK) by Harmandir Hamraz ji. While skipping through pages, I noticed a very peculiar thing. I sat up and started from the beginning all over again. I began from films of 1947 upto 1980 and confirmed what I had noticed.
What I noticed was that Lataji has been singing songs from 1947, but she has most of her duets with the regular male or female singers, like Rafi, Kishore, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Asha, Geeta, Shamshad etc. It was Asha, Geeta and Shamshad who had sung duets with all new and uncommon singers.
I could only find about 250 songs of Lata in this long period, wherein she has sung songs with New or uncommon singers. Actually there were a host of singers-new and Uncommon-like Jagmohan Bakshi, Sailesh Mukherjee, Mohantara, Radha Rani, Sitara Devi, Paro, Kalyani, Manmohan Krishna, Zeenat begum, Shyam, Lalita Deulkar, Khan Mastana, G M Durani, Ram Kamlani, Shankar Dasgupta, Dhananjoy, Parshuram, Surendra, Pushpa Hans, Umadevi, Kaumudi Munshi, Binota Chakravarty, Gulraja, Snehal Bhatkar, Satish Batra, Satish Bhatia, Binapani Mukherjee, Sandhya Mukherjee, S.Balbir, Krishna Goyal, Madhubala Zaveri, Chitragupta, Vinod etc etc.
Ofcourse, the list of 250 may not be correct, final or complete, and she might have sung songs with these singers too, but the point is that Lata has sung very few songs with new and uncommon singers, compared to her operational period and number of songs.
This makes these songs precious. Even to find such songs needs a tremendous effort, as not all songs are available. After about a month’s searching, I could get just about 15 songs in this category, which are not yet posted here and for which the Videos or audios are available on You Tube.
Next comes the question of lyrics, for which I have to depend on the helpful nature of our dear ATUL JI.
I intend to present ,starting from TODAY, these songs to our viewers under the Title ” LATA WITH UNCOMMON SINGERS “.
The first song is from a film YE GULISTAN HAMARA-1972.
After the Chinese attack in 1962, there were quite a few War films in Hindi, the notable being ‘Haqeeqat’ and Dara Singh’s Watan se door.
After East Pakistan surrender and creation of Bangla Desh in 1971, once again the film industry remembered patriotism and this film was made.
Anyone travelling to the NORTH EAST states of India-called the 7 sisters- would know that the population there is entirely different from the rest of India, in terms of Looks, Languages and Traditions. I have travelled extensively in all these states(at some places you required a permit too) and experienced the sort of aloofness of those people. They have a feeling that rest of India does not want them-which is NOT TRUE obviously. once, in Assam, I chanced upon a quarrel between two persons. One was scolding the other ” you Indians xxxxxx xxxx xxxx “. I realised that people here still do not consider themselves a part of India. Even after 70 years after Independence, we are unable to amalgamate with them !
The film Ye Gulistan Hamara-72 tried to highlight this very point and I must appreciate their courage to take up such a burning issue. How much the film achieved towards this goal, is really immaterial, but at least somebody had thought about it.
The story was written by one RAJAN BOSE, who has written stories, dialogues and screenplays of atleast 30 odd films. It includes important films like BOMBAY, Sarhad, Jaali note, Kashmir ki kali,Howrah Bridge,China Town, Do raha, Priyatama etc. He even directed two films.
The film was produced and Directed by ATMARAM, the younger brother of Guru Dutt. He was born in Calcutta, on 21-8-1930. He started his career as an Asst Director to Guru Dutt in films like Baaz, Aar Paar and Mr. and Mrs. 55. His career started with making documentaries for Films Division in 1960, but his first Directorial venture Kaise Kahoon came in 1964. He directed 23 films and TV series. His ‘Laddo Singh Taxiwala’-1976, with Paintal, was quite popular. Atmaram died in 1994.
The Music director was S D Burman. The relationship of dada and his ‘LOTA’ (Lata), was Blow hot blow cold. Though Lota did not sing for Dada for 5 years, she was alway’s dada’d FIRST choice. Asha came second. Dada used Lota in 55 films for 182 songs in which 130 were her solo songs.(this was just 1/3 of solo songs that Lata had with Laxmikant Pyarelal).
Compared to Lata’s association with Laxmikant Pyarelal- 271 films, 666 songs and 392 solos or Shankar Jaikishan’s 124 films, 453 songs and 313 solos, Dada Burman s number looks small. Of course history has taught us that it is the quality that is more important than the quantity. So,’what if Lata sang 392 solos for Laxmikant Pyarelal. I bet more Lata solo songs composed by D Burman are remembered by connoisseurs than Lata solos from Laxmikant Pyarelal !
S D Burman and many other composers started their careers by first singing songs. Burman has sung 15 songs in Hindi films. he has also lent his voice in this film song.
Today’s song is Unique, in the sense that for thr First and the Only time S D Burman, R D Burman and Lata has lent their voices in this song.
YEH GULISTAN HAMARA-1972 was a Guru Dutt combine film, directed and produced by Atma Ram. The lyrics were by Anand Bakshi and the cast was Dev Anand, Sharmila Tagore, Pran, Sujit Kumar, Ramesh deo etc
The story line was-
The story takes place in a tribal belt of NE province, called Dihing. Dangor Nagami (Pran) is the Tribal chief who does not want any connection with India, for fear of modernisation and losing his post. Vijay (Dev Anand) is an Engineer and is given the responsibility to build a bridge on the river Tushima. This bridge will connect Dihing with India and they will get all the benefits from the government, but this is resented by Nagami and he tries to disrupt the construction works. Dev is fed up of this. Once he catches Sekerni (Sharmila Tagore) and her men who were trying to break the bridge works. Vijay convinces them how this bridge is beneficial to them and will improve their living standards. They are not only convinced but Sekerni also falls in Vijay’s love mutually. Sekerni and Vijay try to convince more people and Vijay also provides them weapons for self defence. But taking this point as rebellion, Nagami captures Vijay and some men and they are to be executed.
Meanwhile, Sekerni and her people convince many others. All those people and the Indian Army come to the spot and rescue Vijay in right time from death. There is a fight and Nagami surrenders and promises to allow the Bridge construction.
When the bridge is complete, all people join together to sing ” Saare jahan se achha” and join the Indian people.

This movie brings back memories. I remember it being released – and did see it at that time. I don’t think it did well at the box-office.
But as you say, the more important thing about the movie was that it shed some attention on the North-East, a much-neglected region of the country. And almost absent when it comes to Hindi cinema.
I remember a couple of songs of this movie – “kya ye zindagi hai, kaisi bebasi hai” and “gori gori gaon ki gori re”.

Oh, I forgot to comment about this particular song. 🙂
I could not recollect this song when I saw only the first time but it immediately came to my mind when I heard “mahala mahala zambolaa”. 🙂 This is how I’ve always known this song.
Hearing it for the first time in about 40 years!!!
