“Shama” (1946) was produced by Sohrab Modi and directed by Sibtain Fazli. The movie had Mehtab, Chanda Bai, Sadat Ali, Ameer Banu etc in it. The movie had music by Ghulam Haider.
Interestingly, another movie of the same name was released in 1961 too. This movie had Suraiyya, Kumud Tripathi, Nimmi, Vijay Dutt etc in it. This movie had music by Ghulam Mohammad !
Now, there are many self styled HFM sites and experts who believe that there was only one movie called Shama and they also think that Ghulam Hyder = Ghulam Mohammed ! So these sites and experts mix up the songs of one “Shama” with another “Shama” and vice versa and do the same with the two music directors as well. I in fact heard one audio recording of a webcast where the presenter very knowledgeably told his audience that Ghulam Haider, who composed “watan ki raah pe watan ke naujawaan shaheed hon” from “Shaheed” (1948) later composed some memorable songs in “Paakeezah” (1972) !
We in this blog would hang our heads in shame if we are caught mistaking the two movies and the music directors with each other. Ghulam Haider, one of the earlier pioneers of HFM had migrated to Pakistan after Indian independence and partition whereas Ghulam Mohammed remained in India throughout and most of his well known compositions were created after independence.
Three songs from “Shama”(1946) and ten songs from “Shama” (1961) have been discussed in the past.
Here is the fourth song from “Shama” (1946). The song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Ehsan Rizvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.
