Dil diye chalen ham diye jalen aise

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

It is raining cats and dogs in Mumbai for the last month. I have had three visits out of town during the last one and half month, which is bad enough. And more socializing than usual and some busy anxious days in the office, had me juggling so many things. Then there was cleaning and re-organizing the home also had to find place in this melee. This is the reason why I have been missing a lot of happenings on the blog. Moreover this is likely to continue for at least two months, with Ramazan coming up soon, and visitors from abroad. And possibly more outstation trips.

I usually prefer doing things at a sedate pace rather than doing every thing at once, unless there is real urgency or things are behind schedule. Despite being a Mumbaikar I am not used to or have become unused to hectic pace of the city lately. For years now I have been fortunate to be in this corner of Mumbai and working closer to home than the average citizen. Though the chance of being transferred to distant locations is ever present.

In other words, I have become really lazy and laid back. I am surprised that there are almost hundred post and almost three hundred lyric contributions in the blog. Which is actually the slowest rate among the regular contributors. But I am not one to complain and rather be a Tortoise 🙂 than the hurrying Hare.

Let us hear and enjoy this cute duet song by Mohantara and Rafi Sahab, which is making use of the similar sound of two words ‘diye’ (given or giving) and ‘diye’ (plural for lamp).

This duet is from the film “Begum” (1945). I could find only the audio link of the song. But going by the lyrics, this is possibly a stage song, as different stanza’s are talking about Laila-Majnu, Shirin-Farhad and Heer-Raanjha. The singers are Rafi and Mohantara Ajinkya. Lyricist is G. S. Nepali and the composer is Hari Prasanna Das.

Lyrics

dil diye chalen
dil diye chalen
ham diye jalen aise
ham diye jalen aise
dil diye chalen
dil diye chalen
ham diye jalen aise
ham diye jalen aise
in aankhon mein
in aankhon mein
ik aas liye
do diye jale aise
do diye jale aise
dil diye chalen
dil diye chalen
ham diye jalen aise
ham diye jalen aise

oo ooo
oooo
mere dil mein
laila hai
jaise
mehendi mein laali
mere dil mein
laila hai
jaise
mehendi mein laali

chhupaa rahi majnoon ko meri
chhupaa rahi majnoon ko meri
yeh aankhen matwaali
matwaali
yeh aankhen matwaali
yeh jaam-e-mohabbat
yeh jaam-e-mohabbat
bhar bhar ke ham
piye chale aise
ham diye jalen aise
dil diye chalen
dil diye chalen
ham diye jalen aise
ham diye jalen aise

o o o
o o o o
dil mein shirin ki yaad liye
ae ae
maine tode patthar
maine tode patthar

duniya ne hamen
milne na diyaa
ham aaj miley mar kar ar
ham aaj miley mar kar
mit gayee jawaani
mit gayee jawaani
ham qurbaani kiye chalen aise
ham diye jalen aise
dil diye chalen
dil diye chalen
ham diye jalen aise
ham diye jalen aise

heer bani teri deewaani
teraa ghaayal raanjhaa
raanjhaa
teraa ghaayal raanjhaa

heer chali ghar rotey rotey
peechhey paagal raanjhaa
raanjhaa
peechhey paagal raanjhaa

ek dard liye dil mein donon
ek dard liye dil mein donon
ek dard liye dil mein donon
tadpen machhli jaise
tadpen machhli jaise
dil diye chalen
dil diye chalen
ham diye jalen aise
ham diye jalen aise
