“Miss Mary” (1957) was an AVM Productions movie. It was produced by A V Meiyappan and directed by L V Prasad. The movie had Meena Kumari, Kishore Kumar, Gemini Ganeshan, Jamuna, Achla Sachdev, Jagdish Sethi, Randhir, Om Prakash, Karunanidhi, Maruti, Shivraj, Kesari, Meenakshi etc in it.
The movie had ten songs in all. As many as nine of them have been discussed in the past. Here is the tenth and final song from the movie.
This song is a Beggar’s song and it is one of the first (if not the first) songs from the movie. The song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Om Prakash hanging a harmonium on his neck and lip syncing this beggar’s song. For the convenience of the donors, he has his begging bowl fixed on the harmonium itself. This had the added advantage of keeping his hands free for playing the harmonium. I wonder if the beggars of Indian those days who may have sung this song as part of their day job had also followed suit in getting similar custom built harmoniums. 🙂
Rafi has sung this song with gusto and one can listen to this song several times without getting bored.
Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.
With this song, “Miss Mary” (1957) joins the steadily growing list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
pehle paisa phir bhagwaan
baabu dete jaana daan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana
o pehle paisa phir bhagwaan
baabu dete jaana daan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana
ticket swarg ki bech raha
yeh andhi aankhon waala
ticket swarg ki baich raha
yeh andhi aankhon waala
arey thodi si hain seeten baaqi
jaldi karna laala
arey tu do din ka mehmaan
apni manzil ko pehchaan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana
o pehle paisa phir bhagwaan
baabu dete jaana daan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana
janam janam ka paap
daan ke saabun se dhul jaaye
janam janam ka paap
daan ke
daan ke
daan ke saabun se dhul jaaye
yahaan jo dewe ek langoti
wahaan pe bistar paaye
arrey kya soch raha naadaan
yeh sauda kitna hai aasaan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana
o pehle paisa phir bhagwaan
baabu dete jaana daan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana
waah re mere bhole maalik
nyaari teri leela
waah re mere bhole maalik
nyaari teri leela
arrey tu bhi darshan us hi ko dewe
kare jo kheesa dheela
arrey main maalik ka darbaan
kar lo mukti ka saamaan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana
o pehle paisa phir bhagwaan
baabu dete jaana daan
dete jaana
athanni ya chawanni
baabu aana do aana

You will have observed Om was playing the harmonium like true professional. His fingers flying on the keyboard. He was also well versed in other instruments apart from being a good singer singing ghazals and thumris.
Same thing we saw when Dilip playing the sitar in Kohinoor, Raj playing the sarangi in aansu bhari hai song duff in Jis Desh …. and Shri 420; and song in daffliwale song. Hats off to them. You can add few more .
