(Tributes to Mohd Rafi and actor Om Prakash)
————————————————

Today’s post is to pay our tributes to the Legendary Singer Mohd Rafi who was born on this day 24th December in 1924 and passed away on 31st July’1980.

On this occasion I am presenting a song sung by him from the ‘1981’ movie ‘Maan Gaye Ustaad’.

On the screen this song is performed by actor Om Prakash.

That way this post also serves the purpose to pay our tributes to Om Prakash whose birth anniversary was on 19th December.
One of the finest character actors of Hindi Films Om Prakash was born on 19th December’1919 and passed away on 21st February’1998.

Today’s movie “Maan Gaye Ustaad-1981” was directed by Shibu Mitra for ‘Kapoor Films International, Bombay’.

It was produced by S.K. Kapoor.

It had Ashok Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Ajit, Bindu, Amjad Khan, Pran, Chandrashekhar, Rajendra Nath, Sonia Sahni, Devyani Thakkar, Uttam Sodhi, Johny, Leena Das, Jazbel, Peeloo Wadia, Mohan Choti, Rajan Haksar, Rajan Kapoor, Shetty, Murad, Ghulam Hussain, Moolchand, Gurucharan, Bhola and others.
This movie also had child artistes Ravi Valecha and Baby Suparna.

Character actor Om Prakash made a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.06.1981.

“Maan Gaye Ustaad-1981” had seven songs, all written by Verma Malik. Music for this movie was composed by Sonik-Omi.

Here is the list of songs of this movie.

We can see that three songs from this movie ‘Maan Gaye Ustaad’ have been posted on the blog so far. Though this movie has already completed its’ ten-year run on the blog it is yet to be covered with all its songs.

Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be posted on the blog. Incidentally all the three songs from this movie earlier were presented by Peevesie’s Mom ji.

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi. On screen it is Om Prakash who lip-syncs this song ‘praising the lord’ and seeking his help for ‘change of heart’ for Amjad Khan. I guess so, since Amjad Khan is also shown driving a car with a child artist in the picturisation of this song.

Let us listen to this beautiful song now…

Om Prakash Chibber- better known as Om Prakash- was an actor who was seen mainly in character roles, in movies of the late 1950s till the very end of his career i.e. till 1994, “Bhai No 1” that released in 2000 came two years after his passing. He was only 78 at the time of his death.

But telling Om Prakash was a character actor is wrong, just because I saw him first as Sharmila Tagore’s ‘jijaji’ in the hilarious, Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed “Chupke Chupke” in 1975 (I am sure this is a movie I first watched on Doordarshan). He was adorable in this song. Similarly I saw him as Ramlal – father to Mehmood, Kalpana and Rajasree- in “Pyar Kiye Jaa” (again on DD). He was amazing through that film and this scene from “Pyar kiye jaa” (1966) was a standout. There are hundreds of such scenes that I can list out here as an example of what an outstanding actor this artiste was.

He began his career as a radio broadcaster in All India Radio in 1937. I have seen a biographical video somewhere on YouTube which talks of his journey from radio to films and how Dalsukh Pancholi gave him his first break in films in the 1944 release “Daasi” after which he was a regular in Hindi films. Here I should apologize for my ignorance, as to whether Om Prakashji has ever played a hero in any of his films. I do know that his was the central character in many movies where a Sanjay Khan or a Navin Nischol (just to give 2 examples) were the romantic lead as in “Das Lakh” or “Buddha Mil Gaya” . Can anyone forget the characters he played in “Namak Halal”, “Sharaabi”, “Zanjeer”, “Loafer”, “Howrah Bridge”, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne”, “Azaad”, and and and hundreds of others.

He may have had songs filmed on him in the initial years of his career but the following songs have stayed in my mind

Song Movie (Year) Date of post in the blog
Iint ki dukki paan ka ikka Howrah Bridge (1958) 5 February 2009
Oy buddho lambo lambo Buddha Mil Gaya (1971) 3 march 2009
Aayo kahaan se ghanshyam Buddha Mil Gaya (1971) 12 may 2009
Teri patli kamar teri baali umar Dus Laakh (1966) 31 October 2012
Ajab teri kaareegari re kartaar Dus Laakh (1966) 7 September 2013
Suno re saadho ye sansaaram ultam paltam ho gaya Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thhi (1970) 21 February 2018

Meri patni mujhe sataati hai is a song that I discovered today.

He has had Manna Dey, Mohd. Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor etc giving playback for him. Today we see him singing in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice, a song written by Aziz Kashmiri and tuned by Shankar Jaikishan.

“International Crook” (1974) was a movie produced and directed by Pachhi who also played the role of Jamal Pasha in that movie. I have read in some post, in our blog, that Pachhi was Om Prakash’s brother, and when (by chance) I saw the movie recently I was 100% sure (for sometime at least) that Omji was playing a double role. Then it occurred to me that this person had a huge paunch and hence cannot be Om Prakashji.

“International Crook” had six songs of which the blog has this song which was Avinashji’s contribution on the occasion of Dharmendra’s 85th birthday. Today’s song is to recall Om Prakashji, it is 24 years since he left this mortal world.

Song-Pehra do hoshiyaari se bhai jaagte rehna (International Crook)(1974) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Aziz Kashmiri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Pehra do hoshiyaari se bhai jaagte rehna
bachna chorbaazaari se bhai jaagte rehna

Pehra do hoshiyaari se bhai jaagte rehna
bachna chorbaazaari se bhai jaagte rehna

o shreeman
o mister
tu jaldi bane manister
o shreeman
o mister
tu jaldi bane manister

Pehra do hoshiyaari se bhai jaagte rehna
bachna chorbaazaari se bhai jaagte rehna
o shreeman
o mister
tu jaldi bane manister
o shreeman
o mister
tu jaldi bane manister
bachna chorbaazaari se bhai jaagte rehna

badhti dekhi aazaad se
saath saath mehangaai
arre sabko milkar rote dekha
kya dhobi kya naai
o mat ro mere laala
nahin to main bhi ro doonga

aur is darr ke maare maine
aur is darr ke maare maine
shaadi nahin karaai
shaadi nahin karaai

o Pehra do hoshiyaari se bhai jaagte rehna
bachna chorbaazaari se bhai jaagte rehna
o shreeman
o mister
tu jaldi bane manister
o shreeman
o mister
tu jaldi bane manister
Pehra do hoshiyaari se bhai jaagte rehna

teri aankhen band neend se
aur dushman hoshiyaar
jaag nahin to le doobegi
dushman ki lalkaar
o praaji jaago
wo lut jaayega desh wo jiske
lut jaayega desh wo jiske
so jaayen pehredaar
so jaayen pehredaar

4902 Post No. : 16707

Today 19th December’2021 is the 102nd birth anniversary’ of actor Om Prakash (19.12.1919 – 21.02.1998) whom we have watched performing in many character roles in the Hindi movies.

When I think of the movies of Om Prakash where I watched and liked his performance, it is a long list. I must say I liked his performances in all the movies where I have watched him.

The oldest memory of Om Prakashfor me is the movie ‘Patang-1960’, then ‘Chowkidar-1974’, ‘Sadhu Aur Shaitaan-1968’, ‘Mere Hamdam Mere Dost-1968’, ‘Sajan-1969’ ‘Dus Lakh’ etc. etc. when I was still growing boy.

As a grown-up boy I watched his ‘Laawaris’, ‘Namak Halal’, ‘Rang Birangi’, ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’, ‘Sharabi’, ‘Alag Alag’, ‘Insaniyat Ke Dushman’, and I think ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan’ was his last movie that I watched.

In between there were many movies from the end-sixties to all seventies like ‘Khandan’, ‘Padosan’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Gopi’, ‘Nehle Pe Dehla’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Roti’, ‘Maa’, ‘Golmaal’ etc etc.

It would be surprising if I say that I have yet to watch ‘Amar Prem’, but I do not remember of watching it.

I may have also missed to note some of his prominent movies in the above list, but then the names I mentioned above are only few for example. I hope to add his list of movies later in future on the blog (may be with a song from his movies).

As I said above, I do not remember any of Om Prakash movies where I do not like his performances (mostly in character roles). He also got to lip sync songs in movies and today on his birth anniversary we are going to enjoy a song from the ‘1973’ movie ‘Archana’ which is performed on screen by Om Prakash.

I had come across this song in November last year when I had shared a song from this movie.

‘Archana-1973’ was directed by for ‘Vikram Pictures’ Bombay. It had Mala Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Snehlata with Jagdeep, Manmohan Krishna, Bobby, Jagridar, V. Gopal, Sulochana, Shabnam, Madhu, Sushila, Shibana and Om Prakash and others.

Jr Mehmood makes a special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Prof. Tamhane, and screenplay was written by Madhusudan Kalelkar. Dialogues for this movie were written by Anand Romani, editing of this movie was done by Govind Dalwadi.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 1st October’1973.

This movie has six songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri, Indeevar and Neeraj.
Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi and Manna Dey give their voices to the songs in movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.

Here is the list of these six songs as per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). So far only two songs from ‘Archana-1973’ have been posted on the blog.

S.No. Song Title Lyricist Posted on
01 Jaise …. preetam se pyaar badhha jaaye Hasrat Jaipuri
02 Jab ham hain tere saath… janamdin tujhko Indeevar 15.11.2020

04 Tan mann tere rang rangoongee Neeraj 04.01.2012
05 Jaane kis roop ki jaadubhari parchhaayi ho Hasrat Jaipuri
06 Jo dil mein chubha… ab bas mein kahaan Hasrat Jaipuri/Indeevar

Let us now enjoy today’s song as a tribute to actor Om Prakash who had given us many of his ‘character roles’ to cherish, and songs performed by him remind us of his versatility and effortless performances, in his characteristic style.

In today’s song he is performing in a ‘musical mehfil’ like set up with music artistes around him. There is a ‘Nataraja murti’ in front of him and on the walls of the place he is sitting, there are portraits of famous music artistes around.

Today’s song is sung by Manna Dey, and lyrics are by Hasrat Jaipuri.

As mentioned above music is composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.
Editor’s note:-With this song, Hasrat Jaipuri completes 700 songs in the blog as a lyricist.

Let us enjoy today’s song now …

Today’s song is from the film Dost-54. There were films made with this title in 1944, 1954,1974,1989 and 1990. There were 17 films with the word Dost in their titles. Film Dost had 7 songs. 6 songs are already discussed here, but one song was not available for a long time. Now that is available and today’s song will qualify the film to become YIPPEED !

This is a Male-Male duet, sung by S.Balbir and S.Kapoor. Balbir is a known singer, but I do not know anything about this S Kapoor. He also acted in this film. The cast of the film was Usha Kiran, Suresh, Majnu, Randhir, Uma Dutt, Kammo, Mohana, S Kapoor, S Nazir and others. Actually actor Om prakash is also acting in this film. The film poster shows his name as well as photo. However, HFGK does not show his name in the cast. Such instances are not uncommon. Even in the film “1857” of 1946, the hero was Surendra, but his name was missing from the cast. Surendra had also sung one solo and one duet in the film.

Of course, the task of compiling HFGK was a mammoth one, so such small errors were seen sometimes. I find that only the HFGK volume II covering the 40’s decade has such instances and also in this volume, the cast names of films are few, giving a feeling that it is an incomplete cast detail. In all other volumes the cast is given almost fully. But these matters are understandable. The 40’s decade was a highly disturbed one. What with the second world war, independence, migration of artistes and the Partition. No wonder, material from this decade must have been difficult to gather.

Majnu was one of the actors in the cast. Majnu was not his real name. His real name was Harold Lewis-a Punjabi Christian. He was a close friend of producer Director Roop K Shorey. Shorey made a film “Majnu-1935″ and Harold was the Hero. The film was a Parody of the Laila – Majnu story. There were many fighting scenes in it and in one scene, Majnu is tied up to Railway Tracks. This film became very popular and the people started calling him majnu. He too liked it and continued with this name for life. In Hindi films, this is the only case where the actor is permanently named after his first role.

In the South film industry, I know of at least two Prominent actors, who were named forever, based on their first role or the company they worked for. First was actor Villupuram Chinnaiah Manrayar Ganesamoorthy, who started his career by acting in stage dramas. His first drama ” Shivaji kanda Hindu Rajyam”, featuring him in the role of Shivaji, became a Hit and so popular that the great social reformer E V Ramsamy conferred on him the name ” Sivaji “. He became SIVAJI GANESAN.

The second case was that of actor Ganapati Subramanian Sarma. He was a graduate in those early days of cinema. He joined Gemini Studiosas a Production Executive and from here he did a small role in Gemini’s film ” Miss Malini”-1947. Since there was already another ganesan in south films, this actor was called GEMINI GANESAN, as he was working in Gemini’s film.

Coming back to Majnu – MAJNU-Harold Lewis was a Punjabi Christian. He was born on 2-11-1913. He was the childhood friend of Roop K.Shorey. When Shorey wanted to make his second film,he chose Harold as a Hero. The film was MAJNU-1935,which was a satirical spoof on the old Laila-Majnu story. There were many stunts and in one scene Majnu is tied up on railway track by the villain. The film became a hit and Harold was renamed MANJU for his film career.

He appeared in almost all of Shorey’s films. He was also doing films with other producers. In 1942 he did a double role in Nishani and in 1943 he directed his first film Paapi. Shorey also gave him a film Badnami-1946 for direction and it was here that Majnu met I.S.Johar who wrote the story and Dialogues of Badnami.

Majnu paired with I.S.Johar in EK THI LADKI-1949,the debut film of Johar. Later they made a comedy pair in 10 films, including the hit film HUM SAB CHOR HAIN-1956. His last film with Johar was Akalmand-66.

Majnu acted in 77 films. His first film was Majnu-35 and his much delayed and released last film was Shri Krishna Bhakti-73.
Majnu directed 8 films including,Paapi-43, Badnami-46, Son of Alibaba-55, Tatar ka chor-55, Malika-56, Basre ki Hoor-56, Baghi sardar-56, and his last film – Chandu-58.

Harold Lewis aka Majnu died on 26-3-1974.

The music director of the film Dost-54 was Hansraj Behl. Hansraj Behl, in my opinion,is one of those composers in the film world, who composed lots of melodious songs. Unfortunately, he was also one of those composers who never got Big banners to work for. He and his brother, Gulshan Behl founded N.C.Films, on their father’s name-Nihal Chand- and produced B and C grade movies to which Hansraj gave his music. Hansraj was known as Master ji, in the industry. Only two people were known as Master ji…one was Ghulam Haider and the other was Hansraj Behl. Hansraj usually worked alone and rarely used any assistant while giving music.

Hansraj is remembered for giving initial playback singing breaks to Asha Bhonsle and Madhubala Jhaveri. He also gave a chance to his own friend Verma Malik-Lyricist. Malik used to live with him initially, in Bombay. He composed music for 62 films from Pujari-46 to Badmashon ka Badmash-79. One film “Insaaf ka Khoon” was released after his death,in 1988.

Hansraj Behl is one of the music directors who became successful in the post independence era. He composed music for not only Hindi films but also for Punjabi films. Hansraj was born on 19 November 1916 in Punjab. He got his basic education in music from Pt. Chunnilal. Then he opened his music school in Lahore and he had some non-film records released under the label of HMV. In 1944 Hansraj came to Bombay to try his luck in the Hindi film industry as a music director.

After one year of struggle he got his first film Pujari, made by Ardeshir Irani, in 1946. He got films like Gwaalan and Phulwaari in the same year, but all these films could not do well at the box office. Behl tasted success in 1947 with the release of Lakhon Mein Ek and Chheen Le Aazadi. ‘Moti Chugne Gayi Re Hansi..’ sung by Shamshad Begum and Mukesh from the film Chheen Le Aazadi became very popular. In 1948 he came up with four films – Chunariya, Mitti Ke Khilone, Pardesi Mehmaan and Satya Narayan, of which Chunariya’s music was a hit especially the song ‘Dil-e-Nashaad Ko Jeene Ki Hasrat Ho Gayi..’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song which placed him among high class music directors was ‘Sab Kuchh Lutaya Hamne Aakar Teri Gali Me..’ sung by Mohammed Rafi and written by Mulk Raj Bhaakri.

In the year 1949, he came out with Chakori, Raat Ki Raani, Zevraat and few more films. Lata sang one of her favourite songs, ‘Haye Chanda Gaye Pardes Chakori Yahan Ro Ro Mare..’ in Chakori, which became very popular and it helped Hansraj to gain popularity among music lovers. ‘Jin Raaton Mein Neend Ud Jaati Hai..’ sung by Mohammed Rafi in Raat Ki Raani was a nationwide hit.

In 1950-51 he gave many hit songs with Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt and Suraiyya. Songs of Kisi Ki Yaad became very popular soon after the release of the film. ‘Koi Mujhko Na Bulaye..’ and ‘Tadapta Chhod Kar Mujhko Kahaan Tum Reh Gaye..’ both sung by Geeta Dutt and ‘O Jaane Wale Ye Kya Kiya..’ by Mohammed Rafi gained immense popularity. In 1952 he introduced Madhubala Jhaveri as a playback singer in Apni Izzat and Jaggu. Madhubala sang ‘Dil Mere Tera Diwaana..’ with Talat Mehmood and ‘Meethi Meethi Loriyaan Main Dheere Dheere Gaoon..’ (both Apni Izzat) featured her solo voice. In 1954, he again came out with musical films like Dost and Khaiber. ‘Aaye Bhi Akela Jaye Bhi Akela..’ from Dost (1954) sung by Talat Mehmood was among one of his memorable compositions.

He continued to give his best in films like Rajdhani, Milan, Miss Bombay, Changez Khan and Saawan. Songs like ‘Bhool Ja Sapne Suhane..’ from Rajdhani (1956), ‘Mohabbat Zinda rehti Hai..’ from Changez Khan (1957), ‘ Jab Raat Nahi Katti..’ from Changez Khan (1957), ‘Zindagi Bhar Gham Judaai Ka..’ from Miss Bombay (1957), ‘Haseen Ho Khuda To Nahi..’ from Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh (1960), ‘Bheega Bheega Pyar Ka Sama..’ from Saawan (1959) and ‘Tujhko Dhoondhu To Dhoondhu Kahaan..’ from Milan (1959) crossed all the barriers of success and Hansraj Behl’s name was on the lips of every music lover.

After all these successful films he continued to give music till 1969 but failed to give any hit because his later films were either stunts or fantasy films with little scope for having good music. His last hit song was an all time great creation ‘Jahan Daal Daal Pe Sone Ki Chidiya Karti Hai Basera..’ which was sung by Mohammed Rafi for the film Sikandar-e-Azam in 1965.

Hansraj Behl died of Cancer in Bombay on 20-5-1984.

With today’s song, all the eight songs of the film Dost-54 get covered and the movie gets YIPPEED in the blog

Hum phiren kanwaare Rab ji
Hum phiren kunware
Hum phiren kanware Rab ji
Hum phire kanware
is duniya mein bhookhe nange jiyen tere sahaare

sare aam phirte hain yahaan par
mard aurat ke jode
dekh ke in jodon ko

dekh ke in jodon ko
mere dil par paden hathauden
o rab jee

dhanwaalon ki naiyya maalik

ham bhookhon ki is duniya mein
daal nahin hai galti
ham bhookhon ki is duniya mein
daal nahin hai galti
o rab jee

na ghar baar na paise palle
ro ro karen gujaare
phaakon ke maare
rab jee

chalte phirte din guzren
footpath pe kati raat
o neeli chhatri waale
ab bigad gayi sab baat
main to bhola bhaala hoon
o main to bhola bhaala hoon
tu meri laaj bachaa le
ya to ik se do kar de
ya apne paas bulaa le
apne paas bulaa le
o rab jee
apne paas bulaa le
gaya waqt nahin aayegaa
kuchh soch le mere baare
kuchh soch le mere baare
sun jag ke ke pyaare
rab jee
ham phiren kanwaare
is duniya mein bhookhe nange
jiyen kare sahaare
kya karen bechaare
rab jee
ham phiren kanwaare

Missing Films of 1960s – 102
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As I checked the listings today, I find there still are a good about dozen films of 1960s, and this homework list, that are traceable, available and have to be covered. I was earlier thinking may be just four or five more to go. Ok so, abhi to we are in good stride here, and hope to complete the available list in the next about two weeks. 🙂

Today’s film is ‘Soldier’ from 1969. This film also has an alternate name – ‘Thakur Diler Singh’. And so on YouTube, we find songs available by both names. The film is produced under the banner of PS Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Shyam. An short list of actors – Kumar Ajeet, Deepa, Shyam Kumar, Rajan Haksar, Randhir, Pal Sharma, Parasram, Jagdev, and Bilkis Shabnam.

The Geet Kosh lists 5 songs for this film. All songs are from the pen of Aziz Kashmiri, and the music is by the duo of Sonik Omi. Aziz Kashmiri, by this time in his career, was seasoned songwriter. His active career starts at the beginning of the 1940s, and goes all the way to mid 1970s – a recognized body of work of about 230+ songs from about 50 films. To his credit are such notable films as ‘Himmat’ (1941), ‘Iraada’ (1944), ‘Khamosh Nigaahen’ (1946), ‘Mirza Sahiban’ (1947),’Ek Thi Ladki’ (1949), ‘Dholak’ and ‘Sabz Baagh’ (both 1951), ‘Aag Ka Driya’ and ‘Ek Do Teen’ (both 1953), ‘Dekhi Teri Bambai’ (1961), ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’, ‘Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi’ and ‘Akalmand’ (all 1966) etc. His last film, as per Geet Kosh, is ‘International Crook’ from 1974.

Today’s song is in the voice of Asha Bhosle. Although the video clips of some songs of this film are available, for this particular song, I could locate only the audio clip. From the sound of it, it seems to be a group dance situation. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to add more information about this song.

Another player from 1960s makes its debut on our blog.  Listen to and enjoy this wonderful creation.

Blog Day : 3900 Post No. : 14951

Today (23 march 2019) happens to be 3900th day for the blog. This clearly is a landmark day for the blog, and a cause for celebration. It is just that I had no idea how to celebrate it. I had not thought about any special song so cover with some special write up.

The day is all but gone. One post came up in the evening, and that avoided the day from ending up as a dot day.

I had decided not to watch IPL, but I found myself getting tempted to watch the opening match of the IPL season. One hour later, as the match had become one sided and boring, I have decided that it would be a better idea to devote my time to the blog rather than in watching this IPL match. 🙂

When I went through the list of movies that have just a few songs left, I found out that “Namak Halal”(1982) has two songs left to be covered.

“Namak Halaal” (1982) was produced by Satyendra Pal and directed by Prakash Mehra. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Smita Patil, Parveen Babi, Waheeda Rehman, Ranjeet, Satyen Kappu etc in it.

All five songs of this movie are extremely popular songs, and the two remaining songs are of the time that I was saving for special occasions. I thought that this occasion was special enough to discuss one of these two songs of “Namak Halal”(1982).

So, here is this song from “Namak Halaal”(1982)- thhodi si jo pee li hai. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

All the songs of the movie, including this one, are well picturised, which was the hallmark of Prakash Mehra movies. That was specially true for this movie. Earlier in the movie, Om Prakash, playing Amitabh Bachchan’s “daddu” pretends to be a lecherous old man and not Amitabh Bachchan’s “daddu”. In this song, Amitabh Bachchan tries to get even with Om Prakash, by playing a lecherous man himself. His plan gots haywire when Smita Patil drops in, unannounced. 🙂

It is a superbly sung song by Kishore Kumar, and so is the picturisation. Bappi Lahiri’s music composition in this movie was something that he would be quite proud of, when he looks back at his career.

Here is this special song from “Namakhalaal” (1982), to mark the special occasion of the blog turning 3900 days old. Two important milestones beckon. One is he 4000 day mark and another is 15000th song mark in the blog. Hopefully we will have something special planned for those occasions. 🙂

Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 1
———————————————

We all have heard of 10 year challenge. In this people post their photos from 2009 as well as 2019 side by side to show how they have aged or how they have not aged.

This ten year challenge can have many variations. One is for Indian cricketers. It is interesting to see how Virat Kohli , Dhoni, and Jadeja looked ten years ago. They were all grown ups at least even if baby faced, but what about Prithvi Shaw. He is just nineteen years old in 2019, and he was just nine years old in 2009 !

There is even twenty year challenge, where one can find photos and videos of celebrities from 1999. I saw a picture of Mitali Raj from 1999 and also one of today.

I also saw a video on youtube where today’s famous cricketers like Tendulkar, Ganguly,, Dravid etc were shown when they were very young.

That video had an interview of Dravid as well. He looked so young those days, but just as unassuming as he is today. The interviewer asked him what he would like to be after his playing days. Dravid said that he would like to be a coach, adding that he had no idea whether he had the credentials for that. Today, twenty years later, as coach of Indian U-19 and A team, one can say that he has been a superb and well respected coach for the new generation of Indian cricketers.

This blog was started in 2008, so we are already a more than ten year old blog. So it is possible for us to have our own ten year blog challenge, where we can post songs from movies whose songs were posted in the blog ten years ago, on the same day.

So, I am starting this ten year blog challenge today on 2 February 2019. When I look back on 2 february 2009, I find that six songs were discussed that day. Songs from “Ek Phool Do Maali” (1969), “Do Dishaayen”(1982), “Barsaat”(1949), “Asli Naqli”(1962), “Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani”(1970) and “Sharaabi”(1984) were covered on that day. Out of these six movies, “Asli Naqli”(1962), “Barsaat”(1949) and “Ek Phool Do Maali” (1969) havev already been YIPPEED. That leaves us three movies whose songs are still remaining to be covered.

I knew even without checking that “Sharaabi”(1984) was not YIPPEED and that it had some superb songs in it. So this movie was an ideal movie to kickstart the ten year blog challenge.

“Sharaabi”(1984), which came exactly twenty years after “Sharaabi”(1964) had songs that have become classics, just as the songs of “Sharaabi”(1964) were already classics by 1984.

“Sharaabi”(1984) was produced by Satyendra Pal and directed by Prakash Mehra. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Prada, Om Prakash, Ranjeet, Pran, Satyen Kappu, Deepak Parashar, Smita Patil, Bharat Bhushan, C S Dube, A K Hangal, Dinesh Hingoo, Viju Khote, Mukri, Suresh Oberoi, Sudhir, Mayur, Gurbachan, Asha Lata, Chandrashekhar, Jankidas, Pinchoo Kapoor, Ram Sethi, Rajan Haksar, Sunder etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Three songs from the movie have been covered in the blog. The first song was covered on this date ten years ago. Other two songs were covered in october 2012.

Here is the fourth song from “Sharaabi”(1984) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Bappi Lahiri is considered one of the major reasons for the demise of the golden era of HFM. But he showed that he also had the ability to produced classy compositions. He created lots of masterpieces with Kishore Kumar that are remembered to this day. In a way, “Sharaabi”(1984) was sort of like a continuation of “Namakhalaal” (1982) because both these movies had more or less same personnel. The music team of the two movies was entirely same.

Anjaan, who is considered a willing comrade in arms of Bappi Lahiri in degrading the quality of HFM, shows here that he could come up with great lyrics if opportunity presented itself. While noting down the lyrics of the song, I came to realise that the lyrics of this song should be considered the foundation of the song on which the magnificent edifice of this song was built by the music director and the singers. In fact, the lyrics of this song DID win the Filmfare best lyrics award.

The song is picturised superbly as can be expected in a movie directed by Prakash Mehra. The movie is a very long song, over eight minutes long. For the first four minutes, it is a missing the beloved song, and after that the song undergoes a change of mood and the beloved appears on the scene and the melancholic mood gives way the a mood of joy and festivity. serene playing of violin gives way to joyous playing of guitar.

The song is picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Jayaprada, with almost the entire starcast in attendance. Going by the picturisation, this song appears to be the last scene of the movie as well, wuith the leading duo procceeding to walk into the proverbial sunset as the song ends and Om Prakash wipes off tears of joys from his eyes.

Our regulars are requested to contribute to this “Ten Year Blog Challenge.” That should make it a great series.

Mukesh and his Composers – 17
———————————-

We have discussed the songs sung by Mukesh for Aparesh Lahiri and his son Bappi Lahiri in the last two successive posts. Incidentally these two posts were on the birth and death anniversary dates of Mukesh.
Much earlier in the series, we have also discussed about Mukesh songs for S D Burman and R D Burman. Well, no prizes for guessing where we are heading with these discussions. Yes, the father-son associations that Mukesh had in his singing career and the name that came immediately to my mind was that of Rajesh Roshan. It appears that Mukesh’s association with father-son composers is restricted to the three duos discussed above. I found it prudent to have this short table of the details before we head to the composer of this post Rajesh Roshan.

S No Father-Son composer Number of songs by Mukesh
1 S D Burman 12
R D Burman 15
2 Aparesh Lahiri 1
Bappi Lahiri 2
3 Roshan 36
Rajesh Roshan 3

It is pointless, for obvious reasons to discuss the above table in totality, but we cannot help noticing that Roshan songs for Mukesh are more than all the other 5 composers put together.

In the above table, all songs of all composers are represented on the blog except one under Rajesh Roshan which is being introduced with this post. And, one song under R D Burman from Naukri (1978) is yet to be represented.

R D Burman started his composing career in 1961 and took Mukesh onboard only in 1965. Thereafter he had 14 more songs by Mukesh all in the 70”s and with quite a number of them being hits. To reiterate he composed 15 songs for Mukesh as against 12 by his father who had first composed for Mukesh way back in 1948.

Coming to the today’s post, Rajesh Roshan began his composing career only in 1974 and started with a bang with Kishore Kumar in Kunwaara Baap and Julie in 74 and 75 respectively. 76 was the year in which Mukesh passed away and we have only 3 songs that Mukesh sang for Rajesh Roshan and two of the movies were released after Mukesh had left this world.

Below is table of the short list of 3 songs with all the details. Needless to say, all 3 songs were famous and in particular the one from Tumhaari Kasam remains active in public memory to this day.

S.No Name of song Movie (Year of release) Co-singer if any Lyricist
1 Pari re tu kahaan ki pari Udhaar ka Sindoor (1976) Asha Bhosle Majrooh Sultanpuri
2 O maiya mori main mahin makhan Charandas (1977) Rajinder Krishan
3 Hum dono milke kaaghaz pe dilke Tumhaari Kasam (1978) Asha Bhosle Anand Bakshi

Tumhaari Kasam had Jeetrendra in the lead role, but the duet sung by Mukesh with Asha Bhosle was featured on Navin Nischol. The film was released two years after Mukesh passed away and yet it’s the only notable feature left of the film today. The tune is quite catchy and is a personal favourite of mine.

Charandas was released in 1977 and it makes a debut on the blog with this last of the 3 songs of Mukesh sung for Rajesh Roshan. The song is sung on screen by Om Prakash who seems to be the protagonist in the film.
Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji helped me with the confirmation of both the tables and I am ever grateful to him.
