This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog. This is the 2000th song of Rafi discussed in the blog.
Truly, a man for all seasons, and a voice for all reasons. A person like him comes maybe once in a millennia. And a voice like his is probably a unique manifestation of God’s own will, maybe once in the sustenance of an entire creation. It seems as if the poet Iqbaal wrote his famous couplet for him, and him alone.

It is a once in an era event
That a clear sighted jeweler comes by
Remembering Rafi Sb on the anniversary of his passing away (31st July). And we combine this occasion with a celebration of bringing up the 2000th song rendered by this peerless voice, on to this blog.
Our benchmarks are limited. We have but a cumulative experience and awareness of less than a century. Our range of comparisons is a limited
sphere of an industry, that is more famous for its fickle disdain for anything not associated with success, no matter how grand the accomplishment or how talented the artist. Surely there are other voices that merit the epithets of greatness. There are other artists that we adore and love, for the wonderful legacies that they have bequeathed to this world, and to the art. Each such voice, each such artist is a personality that holds a place of honor, in the hearts of their followers. Each personality has a unique signature, a very affirmative individuality. We recognize them for their uniqueness, and for the specific characteristics – qualities that make us love them, and follow their art.
With Rafi Sb, the matter of uniqueness, the matter of greatness is not easy to put across. The emotive range of his expressions, the capacity to scale the notes, and the depth of emotion so charges the listener into such emphatic empathy, that one is left completely absorbed, completely engrossed in the scenario, in the picture, while the appreciation and the momentary consciousness of the artist who creates such an exceptionally live scenario, is completely erased from the memory. That, in a nutshell, is the uniqueness of Rafi Sb’s voice. It is so pervasive, and so assimilative that it simply denies a character to itself. The song from film ‘Shor’ (1972) comes to mind.

This voice is like water – it takes up the color of whatever is mixed into it. This voice is like air – pervasive, flowing everywhere, and yet we are completely unmindful of it being present. This voice is like the earth – it takes the shape of howsoever one may mold it. This voice is like the sky – its vastness and its potential is immeasurable. This voice is like what the elemental form of this universe is, it is like the essence of the all pervading canvas that permits anyone and everyone to etch and configure whatever one wishes to. And the canvas will oblige, by taking up that color, that shape, that illustration, and even that emotion. And simply reflect it, become it, live it – and make us live it too. That is the eminence of this voice. And that, too, is the greatness of his personality.
This voice is like magic. A magic that God created, just for once, and then even He could not replicate that creation. The magic of self-effacement that permitted it to be at ease with every emotion, with every rhythm, with every pace, with every note – and with every face. Every voice, at one time or another, will perforce make you recall itself. Try any –Mukesh, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Da – and I am not even venturing to list the signature sounds of the likes of Saigal Sb, Surendra, KC Dey, Pankaj Mullick et al. The only time you may recall that you are listening to or viewing a song in Rafi Sb’s voice, is when you are startled with the realization that you are not being compelled to recall the identity of the voice – that is when you think of Rafi Sb. That is the magic he played with – the identity
of the voice was always hidden behind the skin of the performer. And yet, it was the voice that lent the substance of life to the identity of the performer.
Yes, magic it was. And we should feel blessed for having overlapped some years of co-existence, and for having being given the opportunity to enjoy the limitless colors of this water-like colorless voice. The lines of this song are so befitting to this expression. I have been saving this song, with Atul ji’s concurrence, since more than a thousand songs ago. We wanted to target this to be really special – like the 2000th song post for him that we arrive at today.
Just see, the lines of this song. Ruminate and let this sound play inside you. And you will feel the wonder, not just of the song, but in fact, of the voice of Rafi Sb.

What a gem of a song this is. And such an eminent accolade it is itself, to the voice that loaned itself to make its life possible. Yes, it is the wonder that is the magic of Rafi Sb’s voice.
The film is ‘Teri Talaash Mein’ from 1968. The poignant and the tender words are from the pen of Prem Warburtani. The haunting melody is from the baton of Sapan Jagmohan. This is an AG Film Arts film, directed by Kewal Misra. The star cast of this film is Kumkum, Sailesh, Madan Puri, Ram Mohan, Indira, KN Singh, Amarnath, Khairati, Rani, Nazeer Kashmiri, Wazir Muhammad Khan, Kishore Sharma, Mohan Choti etc. This film makes its debut on this blog today. There are some other really wonderful songs in this film, which I hope will soon find their place here.
Wonder that this song is, and a wonder that this voice is. Limited though by his physical absence now, we will not be adding more to the list that we have. But, oh, we still have many, many more to discuss and write about. Small mercies, to be thankful for. Just love the sound, love the voice.

‘Teri Awaaz ki Jaadugari se ” is the perfect song for this occasion, both death anniversary tribute and 2000th. Now having heard the song again, it is a manifestation of the voice of ‘Awaaz ka Jaadugar ‘.
I envy you the ability to put the feel of the occasion in words so beautifully. Yes, there is a praise, a prayer, a bewildered wonderment and there is an analysis, of a voice which is actually inexplicable. Let the magic of God’s grace continue….

I heard this song for the first time ,when Radio Ceylone was on the top,and felt that time,this song has power of RAFI SAAB,and would be liked by real music lovers.I remember,this song knocked BINACA GEETMALA too,but aftr once or twice ,song never heard on B.G.I was very keen to find out 78 rpm record which I got in 1980 or so.I would say RAFI KI AWAZ KI JADOOGARI MEN NA JAANE ………..SALAAM RAFI SAAB on your 33rd death anni..

Waah!!! Ye gaana sun ke dil khush ho gaya!
What a lovely song to pick as Rafi saab’s 2000th. I have never heard this song before. But indeed, it captures our emotions so well – “teri awaaz ki jaadugari se
na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gayaa hoon”.
And what a beautiful write-up too, Sudhirji. As usual. You have analysed Rafi saab’s magic so well. Indeed, the identity of the voice in his case was always hidden behind the skin of the performer. That is why it always felt as if the performer was naturally singing.
Am off now to read other tributes to Rafi saab today on this blog.
